  • Craig Ranapia,

Didn't Labour promise 20 hours free healthcare?

20 hours free childcare a week, but if Steve is going to get all Clintonian about what the meaning of 'free' is then it would be graceless to quibble with you. And memo to John Key: This is why you write the policy (and figure out how it's going to work) before the campaign talking points. It all comes back to bite you in the arse sooner or later.

  • InternationalObserver,

    yeah - SNAP!
I just ran back to check - while watching the TV news the penny dropped: "did I say __health__care?"

No no. As Maharey was at pains to point out all week - National was promising something about childcare. Labour was promising quality early child education. Not babysitters, but actual learning, etc.

No no no, Graeme. Perhaps someone could take pains to point out to Mr. Maharey that when you start throwing around the f-word, it helps if you're quite clear on the difference between something being heavily subsidised and free.

And, FYI, if you ever find yourself working in the childcare sector don't ever patronise the caregivers as glorified babysitters. There are more pleasant ways to get torn a new arsehole.

  • InternationalObserver,

I think they got the idea from one of those TV ads for telephone 'chat' lines. When they say "call now - free for a limited time" they don't mean you can use their services for free while a sales promotion is on; they mean you can talk for free for the first few minutes and then you get pinged $4.99 a minute thereafter.

  • Graeme Edgeler,

    No no no, Graeme.

I was trying to parrot Maharey - to make a number of, admittedly rather subtle, points.

Maharey is asked a question in Parliament - "how many ... 20 hours free ... childcare" to which Maharey would respond pointing out the difference between "childcare" and "quality early childhood education" and not addressing the "free" aspect.

Then someone else will ask him a supplementary - and again mention childcare, and he will use it to point out that National was about childcare - no matter how beneficial, and Labour is about early childhood education - which he asserts is better etc. Again avoiding the "free" bit.

    Graeme:

If anyone is ever mad enough to hand me a ministerial warrant, you're my spin doctor. (I have one immortal soul, bit tatty around the edges but a renovator's dream.) :) As I said above, I think Maharey would have saved himself a lot of trouble if they'd written the policy before the press release, because the semantic two-step doesn't really seem to be working.

The liberation of Paris? er, that was first used by someone about 10 minutes after incarceration.

Pah. I knew it was too late. Must pay more attention to the big (lead) news stories, obviously.

Heh heh - I think someone had a 'Liberate Paris' placard at the courthouse. You may also recall that dickhead who screamed "Nooooo!" when the verdict was announced, and then seemingly went into hysterical shock.

I'm pretty sure they were all a part the Hilton defense/PR effort.

turns out they were one and the same!! :

Just the audio snippet, but what a fantastic audio snippet!

  • Daniel McKenzie,

I was quite pleased with how TV One handled the Paris Hilton story in the end (not so beforehand - Bernadine saying "I don't care" about Paris Hilton was where it started shifting further back into the oddspot news). When Paris got out of jail, the story was more "Paris is now out of jail - but what's with the media coverage?" Classic how Simon asked Wendy "Do we care?" and Wendy going "No... well... a little." Tut, tut.

  • InternationalObserver,

    okay, another weird one ..

I'm damn sure on the TV1 6pm bulletin tonight (Tuesday) the reporter was saying Tasmin Cooper instead of Tamsin Cooper, while reporting this story. I really thought it odd at the time (whilst watching) more so when I thought I saw the words 'Tasmin Cooper' under Tamsin Cooper's talking head. Especially since they were showing the swing tag with Tamsin Cooper printed on it.

So I recorded the 10.45pm bulletin, but lo & behold it was Tamsin all the way. Did they re-voice the item or am I going nuts? Yes, I know the obvious answer but did anyone else see the 6pm bulletin and note the Tasmin/Tamsin thing?

BTW - I downloaded the flash media player for Mac but the TVNZ video only plays the advertisement - not the story. I tried 3 times (and saw 3 different ads) with the same result. Maybe the story won't play because they haven't uploaded the re-recorded version yet?!

yeah that's what Juliet McVeigh said, check Sideswipe in the Herald for more. . . they did fix it for the late news, was probably too late feeding it from Queenstown via Christchurch to Auckland to redo for 6pm. I blame Chch - source of all things evil.

Yeah, what is it with Chch? it seems like such a nce place, but even their orchestra has people playing the grenade launcher - could make the 1812 overture very interesting (from a distance).

... as Newsboy used to say "dirty sifty old Christchurch and its seedy underbelly".

Best telly at the moment is Simon Schama's Power of Art. Last episode was fabulosity ... handsome sculptor Bernini chases his brother (who is nailing Bernini's adulterous lover) through the streets of Rome, bashes him, and sends his servant to slash his cheating girlfriend's face. And later he resurrects his career with statue of nun in coital style ecstasy. Take that Ultimate Force.

I am now qute bitter with TV3, who only showed the second half of the Project Runway premiere episode, and completely avoided the preamble 'Road to the Runway' hour with Tim Gunn. Now I've got to contact my Friends in America again... bah. Note to TV3: *I know when there's an episode missing*. Teh interwebs tells me so!
