  • Graeme Edgeler,

Okay, I know this should be in next week's discussion, but Let's Get Inventin'

    boooo

I've been watching Lost Jr. throughout and would appreciate seeing them get off the island...

On that note, what is it with TV starting the second season of shows straight after the first, and then stopping airing them part way through? Lost Jr., HIMYM, something else I'm forgetting, etc. It's getting old.

I think you dropped a 2 there since it's only TV2 that do it. TVNZ wouldn't dare do that on TV1, lest a viewer complain to their MP. TV3 did drop 30 Rock midway thru but that was because it rated badly (really? everyone on PAS seemed to love it).

Spare a thought for US viewers. Over there its normal to run a new show, stop after 4-6 episodes, play some repeats, and then continue with the new series. Which explains those 'catch-up' episodes - they need 'em to remind viewers WTF was happening!!

But yes, it's a 'trick' we don't need to see here. Which reminds me: Nip/Tuck is on tonite at 10.30 PM on TV2 for all those that wondered where it went ...

  • Graeme Edgeler,

Not just TV2 - TV3 started the second season of How I Met Your Mother straight after the first, but then pulled it for repeats of Bro' Town.

I doubt PAS is very representative of New Zealand's TV-viewing habits.

We all love The Wire, hell, we've all heard of The Wire.

And hands up who likes reality TV...

  • Neil Smart,

This was the time she (princees Di) brushed up her image with the landmines campaign. But when Alan Coren said on the show, "I don't know anything about landmines or Princess Di, but I do know you'd be mad to poke either of them", there was a moment's stunned silence, followed by a huge howl of delighted laughter

Thank you Simon Hoggart the joke was worth the price of the paper. His comments on Royal males are also timely. Either a republic be, or put up with the idiosyncrasies of royalty: isn't being royal supposed to be about having divine rights or something!! Licence to be odd.

Philip was right about the Woodsman on Maori TV. A consistently high standard from the Sunday films on Maori Telly. Finally Dr Who, all that is best of British TV. Made on a shoestring, looks like it, and nothing should change.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Spare a thought for US viewers. Over there its normal to run a new show, stop after 4-6 episodes, play some repeats, and then continue with the new series.

This happens because the later episodes of the series will still be in production as the earlier ones are screening, so they need to take a break for a few weeks to let the production team catch up.

The last series of House, for example, took a gruelling four-week break about three-quarters of the way through.

You can often spot the first episode after a break - it usually starts with a scene where everyone is called into one room and carefully named ("Foreman, what do you think? Chase, what's your opinion?") so new viewers can catch up.

So while it can be annoying having a series screen in NZ months after it played in the US, one bonus is that we (usually) get them screened without big gaps.

  • Joanna,

Plus in the States they like to hold back new content and big scandalous stories for their Sweeps weeks - like "OMG Marisa is a lesbian and they're like, totally pashing!"

Well, that's a benign view of things. The networks must love passive viewers who accept that BS. I have no doubt that they know how long a series takes to make (time is money afterall) and can surely manage to run an entire series without breaks should the choose to do so. But they don't.

    Some US critics are rankled:

If NBC had any sense, they would hold the series till January ... and run every episode in a row without repeats, a la "Lost" and "24."

  • Sue,

    i love reality TeeVee, i know i shouldn't
    but i do

at the Top of my reality TeeVe Tree is Top Chef and I've been physically scarred by the current US season not having an episode this week.

it's followed by project runway, and America's Next Top Model.
since all three are competitions, where people do things I keep telling myself they are almost like docos.

    AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!
TiVo hell tonite: Rescue Me on TV1, at the same time as Nip/Tuck on TV2, at the same time as Letterman/Hillary Clinton on Prime.

    AAAARRRRGGGHHHH!!!#2
That film reporter from TV3 actually called Brian DePalma's new film 'Red--acted' instead of 'Re--dacted' (as in: to redact/censor). Woi cun't they spek propurly?

About 10 people walked out of this afternoon's Telluride screening of Brian DePalma's Redacted, most during a horrific rape scene right in the center of the picture. The bulk of those who stayed gave the HD dramatization of the real-life rape and murder of a 15-year-old Iraqi girl by U.S. soldiers an overwhelmingly positive reception.

    IO - I've heard worse.

A few years back, One News reported that Jonah Lomu had resigned [from the All Blacks]. Actually, he'd re--signed.

Surely not even a One News reader would have been so word-blind. You "resign from" a position you're giving up and "re-sign with" something you're continuing.

  • Graeme Edgeler,

Yeah - I was trying remember how it worked - she wasn't so word blind as that (the square bracket bit was to help understanding, not what was said).

It may have been something like:

"Jonah Lomu has been in discussions with the Rugby Union and has resigned.

The two year deal will see Lomu..."

  • giovanni tiso,

Dexter is starting on Sky One tonight. It's about some sort of CSI type person who is also a serial killer - which might just be the worst premise in the history of premises - but it has Michael C Hall (David in Six Feet Under) and it did get good reviews. Can't personally vouch for it, but I have friends with brains who liked it.

    Dang.

I don't know if I can handle both Van and Loretta pining.

  • InternationalObserver,

Crikey! We supposedly live in a digital age, and one would presume PAS ppl would lead the charge, but no, here we are discussing what we watched on telly last nite. Thanks for the spoiler JP, I hadn't watched it yet!

But seriously ... I did switch over right at the end to discover that OF was running over time and my HDD recorder missed the gripping final minute. I wonder how many of the other 7 episodes have been short-recorded also? (I've been saving them up for a rainy day/flu).

I already know the same thing has happened with Rescue Me because TV1 keep changing the start time very few weeks by 5 minutes or so. What's up with these freaking networks? Can't they run to schedule? If they're not running over time, they're starting the show early (so you miss recording the first minute).

Seriously, who do I hunt down and kill, and would it make a difference? I've tried recording an extra few minutes but it makes no freaking difference. Seriously, who do I hunt down and kill, and would it make a difference? Seriously, who do I hunt down and kill? Seriously, who do I kill?

  • InternationalObserver,

funny what you can overhear in a cafe whilst you're trying to mind your own business ... why, only this morning:

some people were having a very serious discussion about rebranding a TV channel. Which of the five 'free' channels you ask? Well, that wouldn't be fair. But the channel person was telling the branding experts they were open to anything. Maybe they go back to the days when they spent $250k on 'branding' in TV Guide? Maybe they run a brand campaign that's not about the shows?

Maybe PAS readers could come up with some ideas on how to brand a TV channel??

Something warm and fuzzy, perhaps involving some of those highly paid TV frontpersons turning up to a backyard barbie in a working-class part of town, wearing an old t-shirt and carrying a dozen red, with children splashing around in an old-school above-ground para pool, with a TV playing in the background with some great Kiwi sporting triumph underway, all in slo-mo ... f#ck, yes, almost forgot: must have kiwi music as soundtrack, y'know that one that everyone knows and loves, but hasn't heard in a while, but when they hear it their eyes light up ...

I reckon they just change their current logo orange. That should work. Now, where's my $300,000?

Also, what the hell am I going to do when Sopranos ends next week? I'm mildly spoiled for the final scene, but I don't know what else happens. Loved last night's slow buildup.

oh ... I thought maybe you'd update with highlights for Tuesday - Saturday.

oh well: Letterman tonite supposedly features Flight of the Conchords (but that's not the first time Prime have said this, and then it wasn't)

Wondering why I was watching the Warriors get another thumping, checked the Prime website: yep, Weeds is bumped. More- it looks- as of this moment, at any rate- as if Prime's Weeds website has been hacked.
