  • Craig Ranapia,

Go on, admit it, and how cool were those old-school cylons?

Way cool, though not as cool as the revelation that Michelle Forbes' chances of snagging a GLAAD Media Award are pretty much non-existent. Meep...

  • Craig Ranapia,

could it be that Californication has more of a feminist agenda, no doubt equally abhorrent to Family First, than we thought? Hmm, discuss.

No. Let me put it this way, if Shakespeare was pitching Othello to a Hollywood executive, the first note would be that Iago needed to have some redeeming features, and a backstory to explain his 'motiveless malignancy' as the product of being jilted by the love of his life, childhood sexual abuse, or a Vicodin habit and just caring too damn much. I'm supposed to be impressed that Californication doesn't even have the courage of its own ugliness?

  • InternationalObserver,

I should try to watch some of that stuff stacking up on the PVR

Tell me about it sister! I've only got 22GB left on my 160GB PVR. How the heck am I meant to watch 140GB worth of TV (all recorded at LP speed) so I can clear the PVR in time for the Christmas Hols? And do the Xmas shopping. I'm seriously thinking of buying another PVR (250GB) - does this mean I have a problem?

the Shortland Street serial killer will become known to us in the final week this year ... I've got no frakking idea who it is.

And I haven't watched SS since Michael Galvin was on. And since he's back on, I'm going to say it was him. Dead cert.

I'm supposed to be impressed that Californication doesn't even have the courage of its own ugliness?

You'd prefer it was more like Rude Awakenings?

No, IO, it means you are a skiter. Of the first order, no less. I mean, I still use video. So don't be moaning about all that TV.

Craig, really, do you listen to yourself sometimes? I love the way you talk, I really do, but could it be possible that you are over thinking this? Writer whores himself to Hollywood, hates himself for being a literary whore and so becomes a sexual whore. Simple, no?

Not only possible, but entirely probable. But when you get down to it, what I like about The Singing Detective, is that Dennis Potter had the guts to make 'Philip Marlowe' an explicable but unsympathetic misanthropic scribbling whore. And that included serving up the misogyny and sexual neurosis straight no chaser.

I know this is a really stupid generalisation, but I think there's a reason why Potter failed to be that successful on the other side of the ditch. American public always want a tragedy with a happy ending. (Anyone who can find who I quoted that from without resorting to Google doesn't get a prize, but my eternal admiration.) And heavens forbid the cynicism has to go down without a big spoonful of sugar.

The Shortland Street serial killer will become known to us in the final week this year

The Herald has this as a news story in the national news section - not entertainment. It's that important, y'all.

The article also mentions that three possible endings for the episode where the killer is revealed were briefly leaked onto YouTube before South Pacific jumped on it.

I like how the Shorty serial killer storyline has become something that almost everyone cares about - it's come up as a topic of conversation at every social event I've been to lately.

Must be an Auckland thing...actually that's not quite true. It's become a fixture in this house over recent months. I try to fight it, but if you're in the room you get sucked in to the Soap Opera Plot Death Star....

Disappointed, though, at how the acting and writing have deteriorated since I last looked at the programme sometime in the mid-1990s.

Bring back Theresa Healey, whatever her character's name was, and Waverley. They were hilarious.

I guess Shortie's loss is Outrageous Fortune's gain. :) I kind of tuned out when Rangi and Donna bonked, thought they were siblings and didn't because accidental incest in prime time is going a bit far.

I'm all for the idea that good writers copy, great writers steal but when a pirmetime soap is reduced to (kinda) stealing from Oedipus Rex I'm backing towards the door...

And is it too shaming to admit that I used to have a platonic soap crush on Lionel Skeggins (John Leigh)?

...using google takes a little effort, even.

I did like the line that time on the Simpsons: "It started like Romeo and Juliet, but it end in tragedy!"

I loved Carmen. Not as much as Sarah Ulmer, but still quite a lot.

I think Theresa Healy was the original candidate for the Dimiti role in Rude Awakenings. She'd have been good.

Or it turns out someone only dreamt she was dead, and she reappears in the shower?

    Could work.

  • Joanna,

I kind of tuned out when Rangi and Donna bonked, thought they were siblings and didn't because accidental incest in prime time is going a bit far.

If you'd stuck with it, you'd have found out that they weren't actually siblings, because Donna's dad had cheated or something.

I liked how back in the day they always spoke about Tiffany Pratt's twin sister but never brought her in, so when she died I was expecting to see her twin sister start on the show, but didn't.

And as to the serial killer, it's totally Lionel come back from the grave. And I don't believe for a second that those endings were leaked by accident. They were too hamy to be real.

  • Rebecca Williams,

Gosh the living room is a mess and that bathroom won't clean itself and if the weather's nice I'll get into the garden and I'm so unfit I should go for a walk and mmm croissants and coffee for breakfast and maybe the kids would like to go to the pool and I should try to watch some of that stuff stacking up on the PVR and are there any good movies on and the car needs a wash and I've got to got to write a blog.

aah i love it when i read about someone else's life and think "thank christ i'm not the only one"!!!!

sorry i don't have any other comment because i don't watch any of these shows. i'm too disorganised to actually ensure that i'm sitting in front of the telly at the right time on the right day. don't get me wrong, i do watch telly but it never seems to be something i'm actually interested in. i should try harder.

  • Peter Darlington,

could it be that Californication has more of a feminist agenda, no doubt equally abhorrent to Family First, than we thought? Hmm, discuss.

It has no agenda, it has the odd good line (the 'bro-ner') and apart from that it is vacuous personified. Nicely covered by the steady stream of naked hotties in the first two episodes but that's dried up now as well.

Cf reminds me a bit of Huff, that show looked really promising in its first series (some great lines, potentially interesting characters, not certain where it was heading etc...) but quickly became down and dull in the 2nd series as the writers ideas dried up. I think Cf's writers might have done their dash after the 'little man in the boat' speech in Ep 1.

Also, the daughter creeps me out for some reason. It's like they tried not to go for the stereotyped sweet little angel character but came up with something far more disturbing instead. Like a pre-pubescent Meg White dwarf with the wisdom of Yoda. *shudders*

Re: The shorty street murderer "leak"

    1) not just 'real' news, but front page? Really? For F@#& sake...

    2) if it really was a leak, why were there three options for who dunnit?

I'm sure this is a publicity exercise by the production company or TV channel.... the only real question, is one of the three leaked endings the real one, or are they all fake?

  • samuel walker,

I have been pleasantly surprised at how good some of the subtext and language in Californication has been. There are some good writers having a lot of fun on this one. Its as close to Spider Jerusalem as TV could ever get....

As for Razor, look for the unrated version, which surfaced yesterday, its longer and flashier. I have been VERY patient waiting for it....

[soapbox/on] Of course if our local tv had the brains to get it on within a few weeks they may actually get more viewers.....[soapbox/off]

I think it's becoming increasingly common to write and film multiple endings/climaxes to major shows. Means that there might only be half a dozen people who know what's actually going onto the tv, rather than a hundred or so.

I'd bet the actual ending wasn't leaked at all. The 'Secret 4th ending' and all that.

Finally, totally loving Love My Way which actually made me shed a little tear the other week.

I haven't been keeping up with it here (watched it in Aus the first time round) but I think I can guess which episode you're talking about! It's definitely one of the best shows I've seen in a very long time. And all 3 series seem to be out there on the torrents if anyone needs to catch up...

Keep an eye on the mysteriously vanished Toni Thompson. The killings have just begun. All next year we watch an ever-dwindling cast, as Toni exacts her revenge, culminating on the Xmas Eve 2008 slaying of Dr Chris. Toni then whips off her disguise, announces that Ferndale is now safe from Dr Screw-Anything-on-Two-Legs Warne, and Shortland Street finishes. For Good.

And if this from Ron Moore pans out, you may be waiting forever for the last seven episodes of the series.

Production wrapped on episode 413 late [November 16th], and there’s no certain date to resume shooting. No more scripts exist. My office staff has been laid off. My cast has been suspended, without pay.

I refuse to believe that we won’t finish, that we won’t be back to film our final stories, but I know and accept there is that possibility. The strike will be a seminal event for many of us in this business as it’s put literally everything we care about in the balance (if only for a short time so far) for something we all believe is important.

Writers talk a lot about the strike, about the reasons we’re out on the picket lines and our feelings and experiences in the business. It’s been an interesting three weeks. I’ve connected with more scribes in the last few weeks than in many months before and I come away from it to date with a sense of optimism about the solidarity of the membership and admiration for my peers.

Galactica’s coming back, I frakking promise you that. But I am ready to put the rest of the story on the table and take the risk that I’ll never be able to tell it, in support of this strike.

Like Adama says, you make your choices and then you live with them.

Anyone who's seen the Jane Espensen penned Dirty Hands might get that Moore isn't going to be strike-breaking any time soon.

So you're saying that Chris Warner is going to be revealed to be Chris R Warne, the secret half-brother of Shane Warne? Cos that would be awesome.

I'm not skiting but my MySky is constantly at 10 per cent which requires Reserve Bank style manipulation to keep the whole shebang going.

I have a 3 year old episode of 49up which has survived the purges needed to fit my one-month-free-Rialto-movie recording binges. I'll probably see 56up first.

There must be a word for the recorded-yet-destined-never-be-watched TV sitting around in boxes all over the world
