They’re not called WINZ offices now, and it was over 10 years ago when that stopped.

Well I'll be darned, WINZ was an acronym for Work and Income New Zealand and now they just go by the moniker of Work and Income. Seems they are no longer interested in New Zealand. That makes sense now.
    ;-)
I wonder how much it cost us to change the name to one nobody seems to use?.

Very droll. but I predict you’ll regret registering under the identity “Stedmund Bacon”. You’ll stick around, get to like the place – and wish you didn’t have an impulse comedy name. Mark my words.

It's quite unlikely that there'd be competing offices from "Work and Income Molvania" or "Work and Income Falkland Islands".

If there were, I'd go to "Work and Income Switzerland", They get 80% of salary for the first year of unemployment. And a car.

So do we now think MSD is an acronym for Ministry of Secure Data? If that catches on they may have to rename it. Again.

It's a horrible acronym anyway - here's some things it already does stand for:

    Mass Storage Device
    Male Sexual Dysfunction
    Musculoskeletal Disorder
    Master Slave Determination
    Multiple Site Damage
    Minimum Safe Distance
    Mean Sac Diameter
    Marble Spleen Disease
    Moderate to Severe Disabilities
    Motor Speech Disorder
    Major System Demonstration

and my favorite as most appropriate for the moment

    Mississippi School for the Deaf

Dunno. My recollection is that Helen Clark got rid of the WINZ moniker quite early as it was a Jenny Shipley thing that was strongly associated with her and Christine Rankin, with "They WINZ, You Lose" slogans and all.

  • Ian Dalziel,

The Press's anoneditorialist weighs in with the Planet Key approach...

Last week's warning, by one of the people originally arrested during the Urewera raids, was admittedly vague and sought payment for further information, but it was treated with a marked lack of urgency. It was only when the matter became public that the ministry was finally, far too late, stirred into action.

I notice they omit to mention that all charges against Ira Bailey were dropped...

but at least they are still outraged...

The inquiries that have started have a lot of work to do - in finding how the vulnerability could have occurred in the first place and why it was not repaired sooner and, if necessary, apportioning responsibility for these failures. They must also ensure that the lackadaisical attitude towards information security is eradicated.

and it seems the writer hasn't been keeping up on modern data storage levels

...access to a ministry server holding megabytes of confidential material...

    Quelle horreur!
    Megabytes!
    more than a floppy!
    or two...
