Problem is, people are now generally so "shallow" and self-centred, yes self serving, they have no patience or understanding that bus drivers may want to strike, so they are force to pay a taxi fare. It is the tip of the nose perspective view that is the problem, besides of blatant selfishness, like, I am ok, what is the bloody problem with them??? It is so much of Me, Me, Me and I cannot understand why NOBODY is LIKE ME?!

  • Marc C,

YOU nailed it re the UN, for sure. I have thought all along, this is nothing but another advertorial kind of "selling" agenda for John the Holy or Less Holy Key. Another notch under the belt, so to say, for NO effort of his own. It was due to the credit of his predecessor, and the NZ diplomats exploited that formidably, that NZ Inc got that seat. They voted for the "independence" of this country, that has long gone, but the selling line was hook line and sinker, but the actuality was never grasped. All those "small" nations NZ Inc wants to now relate to, they will soon learn NZ Inc is just another "trademark" or empty "label", and will have NO effect of significance at all at any UN security council meeting. Do not bite the hand that feeds you is the dominant motto for NZ governments, so nothing will change, but Key can exploit the advertising effect and benefit, to "sell" NZ Inc to the rest, saying, hey, WE are on the SECURITY COUNCIL, we are "good guys" and "so trustworthy", and hence you better INVEST in our place and whatever else, and leave a little note with Elizabeth, to have me knighted, please. Ta!

I totally agree Marc, as people we chain ourselves to our lifestyles, our reputations our securities and insecurities, our obsessive perceptions of an individual, struggling alone, or in tiny units, we are passive and too easily cowed, yet we know our only strength is in numbers:

    The Borg

Resistence is futile! You will be assimilated!

We all know which Borg Sofie means and it is not the ‘good’ Borg*, it’s the 'enemy' Borg that prays on the individual’s needs, anxieties and feelings of isolation. Membership of the ‘good’ Borg, where the sum of the parts is greater than the whole is notably lacking right now.

Society in general could also be described as the Enterprise, we want to be Data or Crusher or Jen Luc Picard; personalities, characters, playing on the holodeck after work, we are not for the most part prepared to assimilate for the greater good, we seldom sacrifice our red shirts and officers salaries to work as a collective unit for the betterment of humanity, that’s why we get knocked off so easily. To do so runs against the grain of this individualistic capitalist agenda.

    *that’s one for the affidavit.

  • Marc C,

The problem we have with "usama bin Key" is simply, he has NO fighters. He is full of farted air and relying on Obama and his "fighters" to do the ground and air work, there and elsewhere. NZ is sadly a laughing stock, when it comes to defence of any kind. It may actually be time, no matter whether you feel more "left' or "right" of centre, to reconsider your own country's future. We NEED a defence force, similar to the Swiss, to have at least half a million ready to fight, armed and to take it to the hills if need be, or we will be sold and lost, under commercial and not so commercial sell out agreements.

I really think NZ has no future under the present defence policy, we either say wink, wink to the US or to China, and that decision will not be easy. Perhaps the best "social" and employment program is getting a few tens or hundreds of thousands motivated, paid well and readied to defend the country, at some stage in the future? che Guevara may even lead as a great example for our progressively minded "figthters", may he not?

Yes! New Zealand spends about $3b on defence. Not only could some of that money do a great deal of good in our society, but very little of it seems to be earmarked for actual defence, the RNZAF are assisting in drug busts in Africa ffs, it takes little or no account of the fact that due to proximity issues New Zealand doesn’t even feature on the Risk board. We’re about as strategic a target as Iceland and in 2012 they spent 17,900,000 on defence. We’re just a flaccid remote client state. Our Foreign Policy is pure Boy’s own fantasy, gun love with a dose of sexual harrassment and worse. God help us if sizable deposits of oil or something else precious is ever discovered here.

Holy shit! Really? I was hoping that in March I'd be back on nicely isolated islands, not smack in the middle of strategically highly valuable ocean.

Perhaps I could change that to Ireland? =). I guess we could be a stepping stone to Antarctica or Australia, for armies that have lost their way.

Iceland is however the only NATO member which maintains no standing army,

But yeah, those Germans, ever the threat…

The loyal "brothers' and "sisters" from our US allies are surely looking like "winners", I suppose, spying, surveilling, all that "air power", and the satellites, that they have:

Looks like a damned "shit" situation to be honest, and it is much worse now. Only a formidable, well disciplined, organised, motivated and staunch fighting force would defeat ISIS, if the SS was still there, they would "manage", few else, I fear.

  • Marc C,

I am telling you ALL again, all this "fighting" from ISIS, Al Nusra and more is coming from well funded donors in Saudi Arabia, from some gulf states, also Qatar, the so "accepted" reporters from Al Jazeera are based there.

This is what we have, Russia Today also reporting on the Ukrainian situation, we get biased reporting from the US and others, so much for "reliable" information. We are not having it made easy. Still some journos working for all keep up some decency and honesty, that is the last hope, all else is total propaganda, that is what is going on.

You are a "dreamer", these isles are "fertile" grass lands, full of big cows and sheep, that deliver "FOOD" and so, and much of the world, not just spoiled middle class young Chinese bratts, are keen on it. So perhaps realise, you are not isolated, no place on earth is isolated, they drill now in the Arctic, and will in the Antarctic, for oil, not for joy and fun. for interest!

What makes you think NZ cows are "holy' and thus protected from greed? You live in a world on another planet, I fear.

I live in China, greed being what it is, why would anyone send an army when they can buy the farm for cheaper and still sell the produce back to ‘New Zealanders’ at inflated prices without having to maintain an occupying force, suppress dissidents or attract unwanted international incident? Mongolia is closer to most of the world.

ISIS financed for years by Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, UAE and so forth, and we have Jon Key tell us we must fight "terrorism"?? Maybe he and Obama should talk to the governments of countries just mentioned? What a fucking joke this country is, to tow the line and deliver whatever support under such conditions:

Wake the damned sake up, John Key, and liars of this damned rotten government, thanks.

  • mark taslov,

Earlier this morning the Herald played the hand first with their ongoing Terror in Canada: Gunman opens fire in Ottawa parliament, so I skipped over to Stuff where the leading headline made no use of the word terror or conjugations. A few minutes later Stuff had replaced that lead story with a full spread also using ‘terror’ or a derivative, this has subsequently been shelved.

the Herald is now rocking a second Terror in Canada: NZ reviews Parliament security. Though I’m still not feeling the terror, acutely. When they’re specifically targetting the Parliament and the military, ‘terror attack’ is about as accurate as ‘Gunmen declare war on Canada’.

A security clampdown has being instituted at Chez Taslov and
In yet another show of solidarity with NZ our lockdown is not being enacted in conjunction with a change to the terror threat level.

  • Marc C,

I would agree, that to a fair degree, what is described as "terrorism", is mostly declared illegal in most developed countries, and that may well include ISIS. But apart from that, while we know what terror they inflict, and what they stand for, I am still also extremely concerned about the "terror" we may face under the now almost totally unquestioned efforts by virtually all states we relate to, who bring in and expand mass surveillance and so.

I wonder, I wonder, if all this stuff we get by way of "news reporting", also about that incident where a mentally disturbed went into the Canadian Parliament building with a gun, shooting around, is not just rudely exploited by our government, to implement the same the NSA have been doing in the US for years.

It is all too convenient to have happened, and it is so convenient, to say, hey, we must now turn our Parliament into a fortress, or severely restrict access, perhaps have armed guards there.

I fear that Snowden, Greenwald and Assange have been "neutralised" by the forces that be, and we are now in irreversible Orwellian territory, where we have to expect the state agencies to listen in, observe, seize and store all our information, as the Australian government is about to do now. Five Eyes are a formidable "network", they seem to have it all worked out, and yes, freedom will never be the same again, if we can even utter that word, it has no more meaning, really.

  • Marc C,

    Again, I come across this:

"The Covert Origins of Isis", a revealing report, and sadly it is not uplifting:

It is from a US person, obviously, so there is dissent and disagreement in the US, and we must not simply accept NZ and US government advice or "instruction" to put up with it all. This deserves more questions and answers. I fear we are ill advised. Best of Luck.

Personally I think it's devolving into a mutant offspring of Orwell and Huxley's Brave New World. Or whatever Neil Postman wrote about - here's the perfect visualisation of it.

Yes that's it, and here in NZ the powers that be just cant help themselves. Key said it way back. I remember him standing with Bennett on some podium telling the Country how "much they care" about NZers then followed with what would be the necessary stick with the carrot as they proceeded to undermine beneficiaries, stick being stick it to the sick and unemployed, carrot being tax cuts for the well off. That set the Nactional agenda for the next 6 years and continuing of course.
Drowning in distraction, keep the masses sheeple. Remove our right to be individual.
Create fear. And for what? Money /power/money/greed.
Australia shows NZ what to do

The annual report comes at a time when the federal government is expected to soon introduce a bill that will force telecommunications companies to retain Australian’s personal phone and web browsing data, commonly known as “metadata”, for two years.

    then all that is needed.....

The Office of the Australian Commissioner, which Pilgrim’s role is part of, is set to be abolished in a bill introduced by the federal government.

The most prominent “terrorist” I can recommend, if that, we do NOT want to go down that “islamist” angle do we:

Enjoy, if you can, or are allowed to, that excludes all public servants we have, no freedom allowed no more.

This is the kind of online stuff that Finlayson and Key will consider to get you close to the “sympathiser” ranks, if you dare watching it, for whatever purpose. It is there, it is worrying, and not palatable, but is it “illegal”, or so?

While posting this, I WARN all, to carefully weigh up whether to watch it or not, and especially those that may look for “excitement” and any excuse for “revolution” based on such radicalism. I do NOT agree with ISIS and what they stand for, I post this for a WARNING, as it should send serious messages of concern to ALL.

This is a movement out to dominate, conquer and impose their system no matter what, it is close to "religiously" manipulated kind of fascism.
