  • simon g,

Whole thing is descending into a Monty Python-scripted episode of Dad's Army...

It should be made into a fillum.

  • LegBreak,

Pretty sure that an episode of Yes Minister used the “I want to find the alligator” line.

  • Leopold,

Not Monty Python - more joycean...

Isn't that a fact, says John Wyse, what I was telling the citizen about Bloom and the Sinn Fein?

-- That's so, says Martin. Or so they allege.

-- Who made those allegations? says Alf.

    -- I, says Joe. I'm the alligator.

  • stephen walker,

I remain convinced he is principally in this job for the prestige.

David, this seems like a fair assessment to me.
    Have a nice weekend!

    Fuck that. Vivid 4 life.

    We always called them squeakers.

  • dc_red,

I don't want someone I can "relate to" running the place; I want someone who is competent.

It's Gore v Bush all over again...

  • FletcherB,

    Felts mate, felt!

Thankyou... I was about to post that's what I recalled being asked for when all I had was textas.... wtf was a 'felt' thought little aussie immigrant me.

It was a felt tipped pen, I was to learn...

  • dc_red,

My sense of Helen Clark at meetings and events was that she was constantly hard at work: light on the jokes and pleasantries, perhaps, but seriously interested in the people she was meeting, their work, the challenges they encountered, and what they hoped to achieve. Whereas Key is all jokes and pleasantries, and seemingly lacking in serious interest in anyone other than himself.

Would John Key be easier going around the BBQ over a few beers? Almost certainly. But that does not a Prime Minister make.

  • LegBreak,

DC, I don’t necessarily have a problem with the Presidential style, after all Clinton set the prototype there.

But you need the competence and direction behind you to be that kind of leader. And look at what’s there...

  • Stewart,

John Key wants to be a mirror when he grows up - reflect back to people what is important to them but offer nothing of any substance. And he's about as shallow.

Yes he seems stuck between being his own man and pandering to weakness around him.

Why not reinstate Worth? There's been no trial, no conviction. Naughty messages to one's girlfriend is embarrassing for leaders, but hardly a crime.

I'm struggling to process the distance from reality needed to use the word "girlfriend" here.

  • Matthew Wood,

Thanks David, brilliant post... hits the nail on the head. I have to agree with some of the others in this discussion: I am astounded that this has become, in part, about Goff's 'hypocrisy'... I mean WTF...

Another thing, perhaps a little off topic: It's quite clear, even from an extreme outsider's point of view (such as my own), that there's been an enormous breakdown of communication inside the national government. Nobody seems to be giving Key any worthwhile advice. Do English and Key have anything to do with eachother? Key is floundering and so is his party's machine. There was an article on Morning Report Monday morning about the Greens idea to open the book on expenses and the National party "could not be reached for comment"... again WTF? (just a small observation I know, but symptomatic of some serious problems imo).

  • Lyndon Hood,

I swear that marker pens always used to be called Vivids, and didn't start to be called Sharpies until Sharpie started their television campaign.

Here? I obviously don't watch enough TV. I've only every seen 'Sharpie' in US-origin things. I didn't even recognise the brand name.

I got the feeling they were popular with taggers, and had become a part of the street art culture. When I saw posters for a local band called "The Sharpie Crows", I thought that it must have been a reference to that ... at least until I realised that it was Murakami allusion.

Yes, my only thought was that that comment must have been a misguided attempt at humour, but it's more troll than droll.

Sharpies are definitely the ones you want to shoplift. I.e., high quality points and reasonably expensive.

Sharpies are better quality, but vivids seem to be more indelible.

  • Gareth Ward,

Sharpies are excellent for writing on blank CDRs

So given they are tools of taggers and illegal downloaders I suspect Judith Collins will be having them crushed shortly.
