  • BenWilson,

Wii is so cool. But like you, I'm a reformed gamer, too many years of Quake. I'll have a game socially now, but never to excess.

  • Idiot Savant,

I visited someone with a Wii over the weekend, and I can see the attraction in the interface. But they really need a lightsaber or sword for hack and slash games.

I also now have a Mii, wandering around Wellington, mingling at random. I'm sure that's dodgy somehow.

  • barnaclebarnes,

Having just made pro in Wii tennis I can safely say the Wii rocks. My arm is a little sore though - a bit of Wii elbow possibly?

One of the coolest things is creating your own mii's. The girls seem to spend about 1/2 hour changing eyebrows, hair, glasses, etc. The other great thing about the mii's are that they start to show up in your other games in the crowd or as part of the activites.

I grew up on Galaga, the C64 and Amiga and this is the first gaming system since those days that I actually like. It is easy to play and heaps of fun.

  • Corin Haines,

I visited a friends house a few weeks back and was amazed at how cool Wii is. I like the fact that they have worked on a new concept rather than trying to take on Sony and Microsoft. I too had aches and pains the next day, but also had the most fun I had had in ages. Tennis is great and I wasn't too bad at boxing either.

I own a PS2 and while I do enjoy the odd game to relax with, I don't generally play an awful lot. I am honestly considering investing in a Wii though, as it is such fun and appeals to people who normally would not be playing on a games console.

    Well done Nintendo!!!!

  • Don Christie,

I must admit, I am not at all attracted to PS or XBox or just about any other computer game on the planet. I do think Tyrone and his Sidhe (sidhe.co.nz) guys are brilliant, it's just not me.

But someone brought this wii thing into to work and it looks very good fun. Especially the game where one shoots Red Indian rabbits with toilet plungers or try skipping with a chain skipping rope.

I could see me buying this, but then again, real swing ball still has its attractions. Is there a wii swing ball game?

  • Don Christie,

To put this in some context, when compared to an iPhone, this Wii innovation wins hands down.

There's a virtual surgery game, will that do?

Okay, so it's not related at all, but there's a virtual surgery game and that's just so cool.

    . . . so, how do you actually pronounce Wii . . ?

    Is it like "wi-ee" . . . or "why" . . . or "why-two" . . . "double-you-two" . . ?

  • James Graham,

Like Russell I had to give up games 5 years ago due to latent OOS issues. Never really missed them much till someone bought a Wii into work and WOW.

Nothing like beating the boss at golf on the company's projector screen hehe Though he did win at tennis but not by as much as he should have considering he plays it every week.

There's a thought, anyone know if sport playing ability translates into Wii ability? If so, might turn off your stereotypical skinny, pale faced geek!

  • Rogan Polkinghorne,

I'm going to throw the cat amongst the pigeons here...I had a play with one on the weekend, and I was...underwhelmed.

Sure, it's innovative, it looks sexy and it's a bit of a laugh...but I found it lost it's appeal pretty quickly. Just too fidgety, if you put your hands down for a rest for even a split second, you're gooorn.

I can see how it'd be good for a quick bash every now and then, but it really didn't flick my switches...except for the ridiculously low price. $500 is a lot cheaper than PS3 is coming out at...

According to Nintendo it is the same as the english "We"

although I suspect there will a gradual lengthening in pronounciation and it will end up as "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" :)

hmm could cause some interesting conversations
"I'm going for a wee" etc

  • Ben Gracewood,

You haven't played Wii until you've played 2-player Wii Boxing. Admittedly with nunchuk controllers being as rare as diamonds in New Zealand, it's hard to do, but it is excellent.

There is a slightly hidden move whereby if you dodge at just the right time (by swaying your body to the side), you get a Matrix-like slowdown effect and you can get a good couple of power punches on your opponent.

My wife plays Wii tennis with me several times a week, after never being remotely interested in computer or video games.

  • hudsie,

A friend of mine caught wind of the brewing brouhaha about breaking wii mote straps and in true #8 style made this video http://one.revver.com/watch/121118 . It is now the number one Google hit for a search of Wii Fatality. He has easily earned enough from the vid to pay for his Wii and then some. And man it sure is fun. I think your arm gets sore as you compensate for nor hitting the imaginary ball.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Sorry, I'm still in WTF mode about that radio station. OK, I agree someone needs a long holiday at Club Med Gitmo for this, but what kind of person would willingly put themselves through that much pain for... well, a bloody gadget? Pay off the student loan, perhaps. Throw in the balance of the mortgage, and I'll consider anything that doesn't end up with having to dispose of a corpse. But having to put up with that grinding, hideous broken glass in your gut discomfort- fatal or not - for a Wii? Piss off.

  • Jamie C,

Is there a link between real life ability and wii ability?

evidently not... not with wii sports anyway

  • Juha Saarinen,

How do you manage to get sore with the Wii controller? It weighs very little and it's not like swinging it through the air provides any resistance as such.

Was also disappointed to see that Russell didn't feature this wiisque video in his post...

  • Scott Common,

We got a Wii on the release date and I'm fully stoked with it. I certainly agree that instead of being in direct competition with MS and Sony, Nintendo has produced a product which competes on a different level.

The key point with the Wii will be that many of the 1st generation of games for it will be average to below average as developers work out how the control interface best works - it's the 2nd and 3rd generation games that will show us what the Wii can actually do.

I believe that Lucas Arts have confirmed that there will be a Wii specific Star Wars title (can't find the link now though) which of course will have lightsabres.

I do half an hour to an hour of Wii sports each day as a combination stretch and exercise routine (it's not the only exercise I do - it's just easy to do it at home) and both the bowling and the tennis have taken a big place in my heart!

Funnily enough I know a number of friends who, since getting the wii, have actually gone out and played the actual sports, mostly tennis and golf - but I did go ten pin bowling recently myself. I used to have no intertest in sports games, now it's totally different.

I expect great things from the Wii - but in about 2 years time.

  • webweaver,

Following on from hudsie's comment (hi hudsie!) - here's the story of how we made the vid: First Wii Fatality - watching our video go viral.

I think the Wii is great too - for me it's because it's so accessible to everyone. Like a lot of people, I've never been remotely interested in Playstation or any of the other gaming consoles - partly cos I'm not interested in shooting other people - even virtually - but also because the controls bear absolutely no resemblance to the actions on the screen.

I don't know if it's a girl thing, but I find it very hard to figure out that if I'm, say, driving a virtual car, I have to wiggle those two little knob things from side to side to get it to steer round corners, and press some button somewhere for braking and accelleration. By the time I've figured out how to steer the darned thing I've crashed and burned anyway.

Whereas the Wii - well, you hold it like a tennis raquet, you move it like a tennnis raquet - and bingo! You're playing virtual tennis! Easy peasy - and not at all intimidating to try for the first time. The first time we borrowed one for the office, virtually everyone had a go straight away, men and women, young and not so young - and everyone had a great time.

I agree with hudsie about the arm aching thing - I think it's that your arm actually overstreches a bit because there's no "stopping" force in the opposite direction (which there would be if you hit a real ball). I found I only got aches after the first time I played - after that I was fine.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

A friend of mine has a Wii and I've been making excuses to go over and play it. But I've ended up getting my own, and this is absolutely the first gaming console I've ever owned.

Apparently there's a Wii workout game in the works, which I'm sure is going to be snapped up by all the new Wii converts.

I should also add that I have a silver medal in Wii shooting, yo.
