  • Paul Campbell,

Here's a Dunedin story about this issue, sadly, because it's a council owned company, it probably means rates will have to go up to cover this (and the million dollars the city was forced to fork out for the RWC)

  • Sacha, in reply to Paul Campbell,

Yet tourist attractions suited to visits by campervan prospered, like the Albatross one mentioned. Be interesting to see the official RWC projections before the tournament about the proportion of traveller modes expected.

  • merc,

We were interviewed yesterday on camera, asked if the RWC was responsible for raised prices, various other questions, like who is responsible for said raised prices? IRB maybe, we said dutifully, interviewer smiled, asked what our business was, had it been affected by the RWC? Yes, patronage down when games are on, why they asked?
Reply, perhaps it would have been better to not have to compete with the Govt. and Council pushing people to their cloud, closing streets and poisoning the well after opening night?

It's an old story. The planners seem besotted by cargo-cultish projections of passive big-spenders who never arrive, while ignoring the vanners and backpackers. Perhaps the solution is to make the big-ticket attractions globally mobile, like this 80s monument to corporate hubris.

Built in the mid-80s in Singapore and moored on the Barrier Reef as the world's first floating hotel, it remained empty during a time of huge growth in backpacker numbers. It enjoyed a brief boom after being towed to Ho Chi Minh City, after which it returned to Singapore to be refitted as a planned casino for Palau. Instead it wound up moored on the North/South Korean border as accommodation for South Koreans visiting the North. It's present whereabouts seem unclear.

  • hamishm,

Just to be a grumpy old bastard about it. I never thought that the RWC would be a goldrush for the whole country. Some people, campervan hire places spring to mind, will be feeling good. It's good and I do not envy them the hard work.
But are the taxpayers in NZ going to get any of the 39 million we paid out, back? I would like the money to go to Health, education and maritime NZ if that's OK.
For a bit of a laugh read Coddington's take on it in the Herald. It's like she knows she's mad but can't stop writing.

  • merc,

It was on Ponsonby Road, an interviewer and camera man, I usually keep walking or at least ask where the footage is going to be used, but as we had just discussed the very same topic between ourselves I thought...why not? My friend has a business on P .rd and I knew she had stuff to say.
They thanked us, mumbled something about it being used for research purposes only...(I used to work in adland so I smiled wry smile). They said they liked our answers.
My friend thinks I have very dangerous views on the social order, she's coming round slowly ;-) Later I reminded her that we forget to mention the Tuppa waka.
