  • Richard Aston,

I went to visit my newborn grandson on Monday, in Auckland Hospital.
    And it snowed !
Magic stuff holding him as the snow fell lightly outside.

A month ago we asked his 3 yr sister what his name should be, she said Santa.
    It weirdly makes sense now.

  • Lilith __,

A Europe-based friend of mine was playing a Flight-Simulator game the other night, trying to land at Chch airport in the snow (the game uses real-time weather) and couldn’t do it, so he switched off the real-world weather. Easy for some! :-)

  • Hebe, in reply to Lilith __,

anyone advised dr haywood to shrink-wrap his windows yet? cheap “double-glazing”.
That stuff seems like a good idea, but in practice I’ve had trouble getting the moisture out of the inside of the window frame and getting the plastic on flat and sealed.

I have the glapwrap solution and it works; no condensation therefore the house is drier and warmer. BUT putting the plastic sheeting on the windows is akin to wrapping children's schoolbooks with that foul plastic wrap, only the windows are a much longer, more exacting set of calculations involving a thesaurus of filthy language and usage thereof. And "recent events" -- as Harcourts property ads so nauseatingly describe 7500 earthquakes in 11 months -- twist the window frames so that in each decent shake the plastic puckers and buckles and tiny corners come loose, thus eliminating the airtight seal and condensation forms and I stick the window together again, and again, and again (OCD territory entered here...)

Somewhere in CHCH, in the workshop of a person who restores old ranges, is my Nanna's 1920s Orion

That would be Len Friend Heating Ltd?

  • Islander, in reply to Hebe,

I’m pretty sure so ,Hebe. It was my brother Andrew of the same ilk, who took the stove to Chchch, and he is the last person to have communicated with Len (incidentally, his -Len's- father lived for a long time & eventually died here in Big O.)
The last communication Andrew or I received was from some film company who wanted to use the old Orion in some film.
Never heard anything back from them. Or Len. Cheers. Stay warm, despite conditions.

  • Hebe, in reply to Islander,

I think Len Friend company is still there. A film star Orion; well I never.

We're keeping warm with this pretty baby http://www.yunca.co.nz/YuncaHeating/Woodburners/hobson.htm I even cooked dinner on it last night. We've still got over 30cm of snow on the ground tonight, yet when I went out west today the melt was almost done. I'm crossing my fingers the sewer system doesn't break down again around here -- because there is a lot more snow than July, and the alternating sleet and rain is melting the snow faster and that's stressing the stormwater/sewer overflow into our river a few houses away.

Much more thrilling even than snow to me is today finishing year one of a two-year course I started at the beginning of October last year. First study in 29 years, and I made it through; notwithstanding three major earthquakes, (epicentre 22/2 3kms from my house), a severely ill beloved for the first term,, children, chickens, cats, elderly parents etc etc. And I learned Linux/Ubuntu. Yee--hah.

  • Islander, in reply to Hebe,

Yuncas are good - my mother has an Otago clone of one -and the top is an efficient cooker.

Am so glad that LenFriend&Co may still be going. Andrew & I never heard back from Len Friend or the film company (tho' that latter entity did seek permission, via my brother, from me.)
My dream is to have Nanna's Orion, my uncles' chair from Oamaru, and most of my stuff from here, in a modest 2-bedroom place on the hill-section at Moeraki...um, Lotto godlets?

And, may I offer heartiest congratulations on your course accomplishment?
It is no small thing to do it in ordinary times. In these truly fraught times - ka mihi mahana, ka mihi koa- n/n Keri

  • Joe Wylie, in reply to Russell Brown,

A big dog owner is just a Marxist who's been mugged for firewood.

    +1

A couple of lurkers were thwarted by more modest means in St Albans on the weekend. Firewood had been moved in order to reveal a cracked wall for the EQC's visit, and was visible from the street. Next door's guinea pigs figured that footsteps meant dinner and gave voice, rousing the household in the manner of the Capitoline geese. Lurkers mumbled something about wrong house & left in a ute that already had a half-load of don't know who's wood on board.

  • David Hood,

From much earlier in the thread, the reference for "socks over shoes" is this ignoble prize winning article from Preventive and Social Medicine at Otago University.

Competing interests: None known. In particular, none of the authors has financial links with sock manufacturers and none of us own sheep.

that yunca is almost a photo replica of the woodburner we bought from another manufacturer.

    it's awesome.

and congrats on the all the wins in the face of adversity.

this ignoble prize winning article from Preventive and Social Medicine at Otago University.

About halfway through reading that I wondered, as you do, "Did the participants get to keep the socks?"

Although participants in the intervention group were told that they could keep their socks, many (who appeared to have image issues) opted to return them to the outcome assessors —including one young man who promptly fell on leaving the assessment area.

    Ah, schadenfreude.
