I suspect the most effective way of dealing with a troll’s persistence is literally to ignore him. He will eventually literally go away.
Pertinent discussion at making light on just this subject – the first few comments are worth reading – based on some recently published research into the effects of different treatments of trolls in online forums.
Headline findings (from the washington post summary)
(1) People who write low quality posts are more likely to write again when they get negative attention. Furthermore, the quality of their posts deteriorates. This goes beyond the simple adage that you shouldn’t feed the trolls by giving them attention. The evidence suggests that negative feedback can perhaps actually create trolls. It also suggests that people getting negative feedback are more likely to give others negative feedback, too, spreading the infection.
(2) People who write high quality posts are encouraged by positive attention to write more. However, they aren’t as encouraged by positive attention as bad posters are by negative attention. Furthermore, the quality of their posts does not go up. Broadly speaking, encouragement doesn’t seem particularly effective.
The focus was on upvote/downvote based forums for the research, though the making light discussion goes more into what might be effective alternatives for the modern commenter.

Whale oil was used as a cheap illuminant, though it gave off a strong odor when burnt and was not very popular.
That would be the low grade black whale. Sperm whale was clean burning ( still is )
Interesting fact. The ‘price of oil per barrel’ currently used in economics news presentations, is a legacy of the whale based economy. Modern society needed the whales to light the lucrative night life. As the whale stocks dropped away the prices increased, until alternative lighting fuels such as Texas crude captured the imagination.
The steel barrels where originally designed for man handling the whales oil on off and around sailing ships and dock yards. I don’t no why we still use the barrels. They are still very usefull in low tech society’s like Fiji I suppose.
Which reminds me. Fiji election! They have there democracy back!

It’s really hard trying to double check my facts about whale based economics on google. There is an ugly thug sitting on the search engines hit list

interesting, thanks
But when you apply the study conclusions to the internet as a whole, you get exactly what we’re seeing now: communities like Reddit and 4chan are criticized (negative feedback), and begin to see themselves as persecuted. Their worst sides gain strength. The volume of negative output increases, and the gleeful nastiness drives out thoughtful, balanced conversation, even within the communities themselves.
I know of no rough beast whose hour has come at last to solve this. Not feeding the trolls—whether individual or collective—isn’t always practical, and the model that keeps communities like this sane (strong, human moderation) can’t work across multiple sites with no unified owner.
strong, human moderation.
