  • Craig Ranapia,

@Isabel: The post Emma linked to is really fascinating for all the wrong reasons. I'd just assumed that civil union partners would have the same status as married couples: Parliament shouldn't have.

  • Emma Hart,

Emma - so you with your formal, written down in the record books civil union can't adopt while we, who are living in sin because we're too slack to formalise anything, might be able to if we ask really nicely? That's ludicrous!

Why yes, it is. But the alternative was to legalise gay adoption. So, better some straight collatoral damage than that. (It is so absurd that I can't believe it would stand up to testing, and the entire Adoption Act needs rewriting.)

I thought she was saying that she was with a woman as a partner, and I was all 'gosh, that's sudden! Wonder what happened there?'

I... really don't think that could happen without you guys knowing about it.

  • Russell Brown,

    Parliament shouldn't have.

I suspect I was sort of aware of this at the time. I just didn't comprehend it.

  • Markp,

Emma, from my rudimentary knowledge of the Adoption Act and Care of Children Act I understand that you yourself could adopt and then have your partner appointed as an additional guardian.

Oh, I really really hate being right: Time to impeach Judge Vaughn Walker.

  • Isabel Hitchings,

@markp - that's not the same thing though is it?

It's not the same thing, and in fact if you read the link, Mark, you'll see that's exactly the situation that the de facto couple who brought the case didn't think was good enough.

  • Kumara Republic,

    CraigR:

Oh, I really really hate being right: Time to impeach Judge Vaughn Walker.

From the web site you linked:

In doing so, he frustrated the express will of seven million Californians who went to the polls to shape their state's public policy on marriage.

Seems to overlap with the whole "States' Rights" thing.

Swap 'marriage' for 'smacking', and it sounds all too familiar.

I hope YouTube does more live-concert streaming from now on -- they have an incredible content distribution network to do it with, and the concert looks great on my connection.

  • Kyle Matthews,

Oh, I really really hate being right: Time to impeach Judge Vaughn Walker.

    What a fascinating wee article.

In addition, Judge Walker is an open homosexual, and should have recused himself from this case due to his obvious conflict of interest.

I'm happy with that if any judge that was married also had to recuse themselves. OK, not really happy, but it would at least feel fairer.
