  • Gareth Ward,

Wow, I see from that link you provided Jolisa, that you can link directions to street view and "follow the blue line" through the street view. That's pretty neato...

  • Robyn Gallagher,

I was just thinking - won't it be incredible to look back at these photos in, say, 30 years time? It'll be like time travel!

  • Gareth Ward,

Although it's rather weird when the direction you are following is shot from the rear of the van so it feels like you're "driving" on the wrong side of the road...

  • andrew llewellyn,

I did walk a mile to school when I was five years old.

The place I mentioned was subdivided is just around the corner from your school.

  • Gareth Ward,

Robyn, I presume Google will have a refresh cycle for the images (bi-annually perhaps?) but hopefully they "time machine" them so you can go back through the years...

  • Jolisa,

True Robyn ... and depending where you look, it's like time travel already. My 70s-licious childhood house is holding up nicely.

I'm shedding a tear over a couple of teardowns in other neighbourhoods though, and backyard vege gardens crushed forever under another brick-and-tile. Sigh.

I've said it before, Streetview leaves me fairly cold, but a Streetview in time would be fantastic.

  • David Slack,

And it was uphill all the way home.

    Luxury.

18 km on my bike. Each way.

Sometimes I took the long route.

And we had cardboard box. Etc.

Rob Hosking, feel free to clear your throat.

So I can force my kid to walk with me, in more or less real time, the whole way to school! It is like time travel. With a tedious companion droning on the whole time, "oh look, there's the dairy where I used to buy a chocolate fish for 5c," etc etc.

I'm fairly certain the repeal of Section 59 made that illegal...

  • Jolisa,

Holy crap, David, it used to take you 4 hours to walk to school? This was after doing the milking and making breakfast, obviously.

I'll gladly function as the test case that boring your children to death is still within the letter of the law. We're testing it on a daily basis over here.

And because I was barefoot, I stood in cowpats to warm my feet on the way.

10-speed bike. Which made me a freak, because no-one had them then. 20 minutes downhill, 45 up.

  • Jolisa,

OK now, my Dad has told me the cowpat story too, with an absolutely straight face. Make this townie's day: is it for real? or are you both (ahem) bullshitting me??

  • Kiran Dass,

'Ghost of Some Cold Street' is amazing. That guitar sound! It's seven-odd minutes of tightly wound and frightening anxiety. I still listen to that track really loud just to freak myself out. ..

  • Ben Gracewood,

When we spoke to Google about this yesterday, they showed us some whimsical pictures of Streetview cars (nothing exciting - Holden Astras with a funky roof rack), in places like the middle of south island farmland with snowy peaks in the background.

Must be an interesting job driving those cars. Do you just keep turning left like a naive maze-solving algorithm? And I wonder if driving down endless country roads on the Canterbury Plains is better or worse than driving every road in Glenfield?

  • David Slack,

or are you both (ahem) bullshitting me??

Yes; and no. Not on the way to school. We had shoes.

But on a cold winter morning, with time on your hands, and nothing on your feet....

  • Lyndon Hood,

Streetview in time would be fantastic.

There's google earth for Rome in 320AD. A very clean Rome in 320AD, it seems.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Lolz - one of my workmates has found her car parked outside both her flat and her boyfriend's flat!

  • andrew llewellyn,

Sometimes I took the long route.

It sometimes amazes me how many people I meet who came from Fielding. A whole flat load of tenants for instance, when we briefly owned a rental property (until we could sell it).

So I can force my kid to walk with me, in more or less real time, the whole way to school

Ooh, that's an idea, can't wait to get home & show the dog. We may never leave the house again.

  • Jolisa,

BTW, Andrew - hello, old sort-of-neighbour!

So what sort of mash-ups can we expect now - oldfriends.co.nz meets Streetview? I must say, it feels a little dodgy, stalking my old selves through several cities...

"oh look, there's the dairy where I used to buy a chocolate fish for 5c," etc etc.

That'd be that dairy that some lady was on her way to one day & was never seen again! Drug war suspected.

AHA! So you put your feet in the boots and THEN put them in the cowpat. Now that does make sense.
