  • LegBreak,

I thought us taxpayers were doing a fair amount of underwriting/contributing as well ...

You bet we are. But if it weren’t for Toshiba etc, we’d be doing a lot more of it.

And our ads will be on the side of the roads next to airports.

@Kyle; it’s only T20 cricket. A rugby field should suffice...

  • Ian Dalziel,

Probably a good idea - the city hiked burial fees by 10% this year to help pay for the Stadium...

    You are indeed being stiffed...

  • Jimmy Southgate,

Which I thought was silly - first stadium with a roof in NZ would be ideal location for cricket, guaranteed international games.

    How high is that roof?

Other than the indoors variety, has any cricket anywhere been played under a roof? Let alone international games.

Bear in mind the rules for international cricket grounds are pretty strict - i'm sure I heard somewhere that Yarrow Stadium is too narrow for ODIs.

They’ve played ODIs at that indoor ground in Melbourne.

  • Rich of Observationz,

I reckon cricket played on a large squash court like structure would be quiet entertaining.

The recommended boundary to boundary square of the pitch is 140 yards. The new stadium will only get slightly over half of that. It would be a bit of a mockery of a game, there wouldn't be any outfielders square of the wicket, they'd be standing only a couple of metres outside the 30 metre circle. The number of 6s would be stupid.

  • Kyle Matthews,

    How high is that roof?

47 metres at maximum height. Which in most games would be fine, but I think occasionally someone would really get hold of one vertically and hit the roof.

Docklands in Australia has a 38 metre high roof, and has been used for cricket, but I'm not sure if the roof was closed for that or not.

  • giovanni tiso,

I'm not saying they don't exist but they don't provide benefits to the residents (only 13% of whom went to Carisbrook last year) that match what they're being required to pay.

That's a very different proposition from "Dunedin ratepayers are subsidising the world cup to the tune of $200 million". Which is just silly.

  • Danielle,

if ya wanted to get all birth town on it, well we'd have the esoteric sounding Invercargill / Te Kuiti Sound...

A few months ago it occurred to me that Chris Knox and my mother would have gone to primary school together. This amuses me no end. (My mother is... not at all like Chris Knox, let's say.)

  • Marcus Turner,

    @Paul
Sorry if I'm teaching my grandmother to suck eggs, but I'm pretty sure the "Dunedin Sound" was a term concocted by Brent Hansen and Simon Morris during the making of 4 documentaries (on music in 4 NZ cities) as part of Radio With Pictures. I worked on the programme not long after those programmes aired, and remember challenging them - in a jokey, blokey, caring and sharing way - a good way, Paul - about having made the term up for the programme, and they didn't actually SAY that they hadn't....

The point is, although Flying Nun were certainly a (big) factor, it wasn't only about that. At least, I don't think it was.

I always think of the Dunedin Sound as being about strumming like hell, instead of lead breaks.

  • Rob Stowell,

Like most genre music generalisations, 'The Dunedin Sound' wasn't unified or all that useful. It was about an ethos and a vibrant music scene that encouraged diversity.
I thought the term came from FN's Dunedin Double EP. The bands- The Chills, The Verlaines, Sneaky Feelings and The Stones- all sound pretty distinct.
    But a damn good record!

  • Paul Campbell,

I'm not sure I'm the right guy to answer about "the Dunedin Sound" - I left on my OE in '84 when they were all just a bunch of people, some of whom I'd gone to highschool or Uni with, who played in the pub on Fri night - they weren't really organised into a 'sound' at that point, many of them hadn't even settled into which band they wanted to play for, and honestly many of the really wonderfully danceable bands of the era have been long forgotten anyway - no one I knew was BUYing their music at the time other than paying cover charges of course

  • Marcus Turner,

Regarding "other Dunedin stories": I felt distinctly creepy watching the drama last night on TV One. Dunedin is a small place. (Just one of the things that makes it such a lovely place to live.)

I guess we're used to seeing dramas about people who are still alive, but seldom get to see drama productions about people we actually know. Like "Out of the Blue", this programme set me wondering what people thought of their portrayal on screen. I wonder if any approaches were made beforehand, asking for cooperation or permission? Perhaps it's not legally necessary and, I guess for some folks, that's enough.

It all seemed somehow uncomfortable: invasive, perhaps.

  • Rob Stowell,

Marcus- yep, totally. I hate dramatisations or re-enactments of real crimes. As a genre, tacky crime-porn voyeurism is one of the worst.
Caught a few minutes last night, and hated it.
I tend not to bother with dramatisations of real events, or 'bio-pics' either. They exude inauthenticity. If the story's that good and you gotta tell it, make a documentary, dude. And yes- that means you can't have heavy-breathing and hand-held simulations of flight and panic.
Or make up a story up and go to town on it :)

Hi all. Didn't blog today, owing to me buying an iPad and it being my birthday.

But here's the programme in question:
