  • Carol Stewart,

And is there a word for the sin of pride in one's own comprehensive ignorance? Michael Laws' column on swine flu would take it.

    Pig ignorance?

  • Craig Ranapia,

I suppose it's a story, given that John Key has agreed he should have been informed; but a shock-horror lead? Hardly.

OK... so the story actually seems to be Nat MP seems to be a pretty decent landlord.

  • Luke Williamson,

Ian Wishart is a prat but the cover art is just a stock photo from iStock.com. Nothing wrong with that as long as he paid the correct amount.
Don't want to hark back to swine flu too much either but, despite the panic reporting again (as discussed previously on PA), some interesting things have come out of it.
    1. Tamiflu worked after only limited success against bird flu.
    2. Speed of movement around the world of the strain. Imagine if it did kill people. That would be an impressive outbreak.
    3. I did actually travel around the world quickly and relatively effectively, unlike the bird flu bug.
I'm sure that the reporters will be reaching for their millions as soon as the next bug comes along, despite this one being a fizzer. It will happen, it's just a matter of when.

  • Luke Williamson,

Whoops, much as I would love to travel around the world quickly and effectively, I did mean swine flu.

  • Jan Farr,

Sorry to hear about your cold Russell. I manage mostly to keep them away by sluicing my nostrils warm salty water as soon as I get that sore feeling at the back of my nose. You don't have to drown yourself. Just sniff it gently till you get some in your mouth. Oh this is a disgusting topic - sorry - but you seem to get a lot of colds.

Absolutely. He sounds way better than mine.

'Cos clearly politicians shouldn't have sex. Or be landlords. Actually, come to think of it, I kind of agree with that.

  • Graeme Edgeler,

It did actually travel around the world quickly and relatively effectively, unlike the bird flu bug.

That might be because the H5N1 virus that broke out a few year's back never actually managed the whole human-to-human transmission thing.

0.9% is the optimum solution, apparently.

The PBS archive is wonderful, some of the best documentaries around. I've always wondered why the Documentary Channel on Sky doesn't run them.

  • simon g,

Only a flimsy connection to the 'crap in Sunday papers' theme, but this made me laugh (or weep):

What happens when media orgs start sacking the subs, episode 37:

  • cindy baxter,

i, too, read the herbal sex remedy story and discovered it was complete nonsense, like much of the rest of the paper.

interestingly, the story didn't make it to the website - perhaps web editors were more sceptical than the subs who put the print edition together?

  • Steve Barnes,

Well I have to say my flabber has never been more gasted.
Migrants suffer big losses as law changes This arrticle got right up my goat.

The Immigration Advisers Licensing Act requires mandatory licensing of all immigration consultants, Many are part-timers who have been put off by the $1995 cost of a licence.

$1995? who was the advisor on this? Stephen Tindal?
    It goes on to say.

The authority defines immigration advice as "using, or purporting to use, knowledge of or experience in immigration to advise, direct, assist or represent another person in regard to an immigration matter relating to New Zealand, whether directly or indirectly and whether or not for gain or reward".

Like I said flabber bloody gasted. I'm lost for words, its just like, you know, fuck???? what???

I was thinking The Harald was stretching the envelope with this one

Man dies in fire at yachtsman's property if you search for Coutts on the Harald website you can see they improved on it later.

  • Grant McDougall,

Speaking of ignorance, Ian Wishart's new book Air Con: The Seriously Inconvenient Truth About Global Warming gets disembowelled by Gareth Renowden on Hot Topic.

I see Gareth Morgan puts forward his views on global warning in the latest Listener. God, I am tired of seeing his articles there; he's as over-exposed there as Ralston is on Campbell Live.

I love the way Laws attacks the "hysterical news media". Do you think he grasps the concept of irony?
