EVERY internet user would be implicated in the “war on terrorism”
Would this ‘gum up’ the Utah facility and make it redundant?

We'll drain their data crystals. But that might leave us vulnerable to the Faceborg!

As Kirk observes, getting SSL hosting means getting a non-shared IP address, and that frequently costs. The bigger cost, though, is getting the SSL certificate.

SNI lets you do SSL virtual hosting and works in most browsers now - basically only Internet Explorer on Windows XP is out. Lately certificate prices are down and IP address prices are up, too. It's getting fairly practical now.

When, as a result of our internet activity, we are all implicated as potential subversives, who then will the ‘War on Terror’ be directed against

maybe we'll have worked out that the 'war on terror' is also largely 'virtual'

Echelon bait seems to date from 1999 - todays public response may be a tad greater after recent NSA revelations.
Still wondering if it would work. Any takers...

Or perhaps we'll have worked out that it is very real, but we need to do a little rectification of names and call it the “war on democratic freedoms".

Wow, is David Shearer finally trying to be Leader of the Opposition? A bit harsh of me, I know, but his comments in this article were quite refreshing to read.

It's a reason they are now more interested in mapping who you communicate with, rather than what words you use.

  • nzlemming,

Something that occurred to me a few minutes ago. If Key ordered that Ministers be investigated, why was the Parliamentary Service involved at all? Ministers are served by Ministerial Services, an arm of DIA (largely outsourced). The have separate email addresses (e.g. j.key@ministers.govt.nz) which they use, as I know from doing OIA requests (which is probably why that log they refer to is empty). So why go through the Parliamentary Service for Dunne’s emails?

EDIT Admittedly, they use the same telephone system.

Farrar has your answer, on Danyl's post - outsourcing. A beautiful parallel to getting the GCSB to spy on behalf of the SIS. Different accountabilities you say? What could possibly go wrong?

Basically, no. They have all the other information to match with, which cuts past the noise.

Surely monitoring these ‘small numbers of radicals’ entails monitoring those communications from everyone-who are for whatever reason-in contact with them. This revelation affects far more than just those training with AQ, communication being what it is.

Anyone here with friends, family, coworkers ‘training’ in Yemen?

Y'know, I think you just hit on precisely the problem. Suddenly we're all suspect (I don't know anybody in Yemen, but I do know people who've been to Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Sudan.... and people from a whole variety of places.... and members of political parties not overly popular amongst the rather hawkish types who seem to form the backbones of military and intelligence organisations... and have shared a few beers and solved the world's problems with a guy who claimed to be a Sudanese diplomat) and suddenly anybody with access to the information can see anything they want in all that data.

Intelligence, security and law enforcement agencies need their powers tightly controlled and strictly monitored, that's how we preserve our freedom. In NZ they've managed so far to mostly cope reasonably well with having to actually prove they've got good reason to suspect somebody, I don't see what's suddenly changed that they need the kinds of powers Key seems so keen to give them.

But of course, if you've done nothing wrong, buy yourself a Tui billboard.

  • Ross Mason,

PM Key has stated that Alan Kayda is present within some trained NZ residents. Don't we have armed anti-invaders all decked out in Black ready to go into battle to disarm and annihilate them at the drop of a hat? Surely, if their information is so water tight I would have read about this in the papers. I DO hope he wasn't referring to the Urewera shenanigans.

Why are they leaving such dangerous people lounging about here...or there...or...anywhere.

The US of A would have been in there boots, grenades and all. We are so slow.

Where and what ARE those MWDs mentioned as being around here? Anyone got any inkling what they might have been talking about? Machetes?

    Men With Delusions?

"In New Zealand there are people who’ve been trained for al-Qaeda camps who operate out of New Zealand, who are in contact with people overseas, who have gone off to Yemen and other countries to train.

    from that Herald article

I suspect he is talking truthfully…
about someone at the US Embassy!
…after all who effectively enabled mr A Kayder in the first place, unexpected consequences for Zbigniew Brzezinski or just business as usual?

"While it’s very narrow and very small in number the facts of life are New Zealand is not immune from those potential risks.’’ [John Key]

A giant impenetrable wall and dome is to be built round, and over, New Zealand in response to the Government's very real fears of meteorite strikes and tsunamis.
‘It’s our job to be fear’ Mr Key said, from the bunker beneath Parliament, where the battle between forces still loyal to the original principles of Parliamentary Service and Mr Key’s red-ragtag reactionary force, enters a seventh bloody day…
