All the shops in the old stables in Elliot St in the city are boutique shops of quality, from the whiskey to the ice cream and yes, sausages. Also a number of food venues ( Spanish, French, umm others like sausages maybe German) that have combined seating throughout the old stables. It really is a very special little corner of the city

Struth, it all looks delicious...I cannot quite imagine living in a place where you have this kind of range of food et al close to hand. Well, I can, but anytime I've lived in such a place - o dear. Cities & self dont mix...

One of the reasons I became a good fishnchip cook* was I had to drive for an hour to get any locally. And the 2 outlets were uniformly crap (despite changes in ownership & staff.) Much better to make it myself - the neighbours enjoy it too...
*I already was a good commercial f'n'c cook, but that's a whole different ball game.

See living in the city means I walk 100 metres around the corner and get fresh fish, or wait for our friend to visit with his Paella pan after a days fishing. We really are quite spoilt for choice in Ak.
But more and more the smaller towns are thinking about the choices we all want with regards food, it is happening. -
Whataroa = about 390 residents (relatively large tourist numbers stop)
Franz Josef Glacier = varying population according to the season (v. large numbers of tourists not only stop, but overnight.)F'n'c in both places = crap.
Mind you, FJG is now stocking relatively fresh fish...caught in Greymouth Tuesday/Wednesday; processed Thursday/Friday, delivered Friday to FJG-
methinks I prefer local tuaki, 'bait, & kutae - but I will buy monkfish at FJG if it has signs of freshness, because that is a bloody good eat.

Yes NZ has all good lifestyles wherever one lays their head, and as you say, if you want something, we have n.o8 fence wire or fish or fruit or veg or that meat stuff that some people eat ;) 'tis all pretty good.(exept those fish'n'chips you mention, but you get the cheeses.
