  • Craig Ranapia,

While it's just more of the sort of ego-driven bullying that Craig Ranapia is given a permanent free pass for, once I'd have expected more of Mr. Tiso. Now I know better.

EDIT: Lengthy response deleted because it's just not worth it. I'll just say I don't find any "honest questions" being posed by Gage, and anyone who cares can review the relevant sections of the thread and decide for themselves whether my response was out of order.

Have we had this bloody full moon yet, or what? I'm getting a little twitchy at the high levels of Holy WTF in this thread.

  • Joe Wylie,

I believe what I expressed was great surprise that somebody - and it happened to be Ian - thought that Richard Gage was in the business of asking honest questions.

Great, you got it. Now you could have pointed out why you thought Ian was naive. Instead you chose to be "aghast", as if no explanation were needed, and your presumed status here gave you the right to be so. Very fucking condescending. Next time you're feeling that full of yourself you might pick on someone a little more, you know, expendable.

Craig - sure, on a good day even chronic attention sluts need to feel justified that they're in the service of a higher calling. And sometimes, they probably are. That occasion, though, wasn't one of them.

@Danielle; NZers always get ratty at this time of year; I blame it on the Equinox winds.

The winds, and the fact that there’s a certain costly “celebration” coming up.

I'm just going to leave it there, Joe, I have no earthly idea what you're on about.

  • Russell Brown,

I agree. Let's all leave it, because none of this seems productive, or in service of ideas.

I'd ask you all to contemplate the difference between attacking people's arguments and attacking the people who make them.

  • Craig Ranapia,

    Joe:

If you can't call bullshit in the strongest possible terms on 9/11 "Truthers" whose attitude towards basic physical reality is ninja-level "truthiness", then you might as well not bother calling out any form of dishonest argument.

Gio's right: Anyone who cares can review the record and come to their own conclusions about whether not I acted like a "ego-driven bully" indulging in "condescending douchebaggery" towards Ian.

The funny thing is that there are many occasions where I've not exactly won the Miss Manners seal of approval, been called out on it, admitted fault and apologised. Just don't think this is one of those times.

And right there is where I down cudgel and move on.

  • Sacha,

    high levels of Holy WTF

Besides all the reasonable influences mentioned for our fraying, I note that it can be unsettling for any group of people to engage others with unclear, disingenuous or hostile intent. Focusing on the content and disagreeing in good faith is one thing but tolerating trolls has wider costs.

Edit: Hadn't seen Russell's post. I've said all I'm interested in saying too.

  • Andre Alessi,

With a name like Alessi (of which one of my tea pots is) I am not surprised :)

My last name is handy for exactly two things:

    1) Impressing people when I pitch for web design jobs;*

    and

    2) Being able to buy kitchen appliances and keyrings with my name pre-printed on them (for the low low price of $500).

    * It's a shame I'm such an awful designer, my only hope is to turn myself into the Damien Hirst of web design.

    PAS Goes Feral
While seeking greener pastures, Clippity Clop,
R.Billy Goat Gruff takes it to the bridge, Foll De Rol,
Looks like you're all drinking from the same poisoned trough
Says a voice from the culvert.
'Tis the man with two first names, "Riddle me this", says he "what is 87% of 48% of 71% of the population of a small Democracy?"
"I do not know" says the youngest of the flock "I am but a DumBugger, there are much brighter sparks behind on which you can feast your rich intellect"
"Then you shall pass mere morsel, I shall wait for one to sate my appetite"
"But beware, for across the Bridge resides the Ranapia, the one of wicked tongue and slippery thighs, fear him and his beady eyes"
And so the story goes until the troll is deposed.

'Tis the man with two first names,

In 2008, the BBC created a modern adaptation for its Fairy Tales season. In this, the story was given a PC twist in that the troll was presented as a tragic, cruelly maligned victim:

    From Wikipedia
Oh the irony. So due to Political Correctness, Mr. Clive is the victim.
I, for one, can't wait for this full moon to pass.

  • Just thinking,

I read the Three Billy Goats Gruff as a Masonic anti-Clerical tale of the Papal control of life/resources that the Masonic businessmen/landowners wished for their own control.

Did the Troll build the bridge? He has shown he is not greedy as he allows two to pass for the price of one.

The Troll is just trying to make a living, but the very existance of the troll is an affront to the Goats and is dispensed with for their own benefit.

But then who tells us this is a troll? The self justifying assertion after the fact of the gang of goats.

I'm sure there was something more important I had to do with my time - but I had a giggle.

    Ah, die Föhnkrankheit

Those hot dry winds that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. ”

The troll as infrastructure management contractor would rather buy the bridge outright and charge a toll for access, but the anti-business climate in this country won't stand for it.

Instead the maintenance costs NOT borne by freeloading goats will create more pressure to increase RUCs on elephants, which (although the green lobby will never admit it) are the lifeblood of cross-bridge trade, and their operators need to be encouraged not levied further.

But you won't hear this from the goats in the rush to declare that the bridge is "free for all" so they can go and devour fresh grass at the expense of our hardworking farming community. Shameful.

  • Steve Parks,

Sacha i have put forward a reasonable assertion that PAS bloggers are all pro anti smacking law, ... There are no variants here at PAS in regard to any of those subjects above.

Your assertion isn't reasonable. Graeme Edgeler is a blogger here, and he couldn’t really be described as in favour of the anti-smacking law. Ben Wilson and Dave Crampton (although the latter doesn’t post here often) and probably some others have also had criticisms of the law changes, and have been supportive of the wider public view as expressed in the referendum.

Next time you're feeling that full of yourself you might pick on someone a little more, you know, expendable.

Pick on me. If someone drove me off this website, it would save me a lot of time.

Well. I'd be very sad indeed to lose Ian Dalziel and his wonderful acerbic wit. A Sir Bic Wit?? Hey, i can keep this up for ages, as the butler said to the queen. Rather have Ian tho.....

Craig, i suspect this is the offending piece from p. 9:

    wow...
the villagers are grabbing their pitchforks
    and lighting their torches...

Dude, me and ten thousand of my closest friends are planning a "controlled detonation" of your house with you inside, as a pretext to declaring war on the Southicans. Now go back to sleep, little cog in the machine...
