  • Peter Darlington,

Heh, I didn't mind Ladi6's first album and thought "Walk Right Up" was an excellent tune (did anyone see Beirut rapper Malikah's interpretation of it on 'Making Tracks' this week? Tot's awesome). So I'm looking forward to grabbing the new album at some point.

Ladi6 is also a very friendly Twitterer if you want to say hi (@Ladi6).

  • andrea quin,

That article about Records Records is grim reading -- sounds like they are left with nothing decent in the way of music retailing down there now. A Marbecks? The Disk Den?

the end of the vinyl front ear...

Dunedin's Records Records is open for its last day tomorrow.

That is the end of era indeed, I hadn't realised that Roi had sold it, and I'd wondered where Patrick Faigan had disappeared to...
I also wonder what will happen to that original Colin Wilson Records Records sign?

  • Paul Campbell,

Andrea - almost exactly that - when Real Groiovy gobbled everything else up then went belly up we weren't left with much else (the Warehouse and a JB) - I buy maybe 1/10 the amount of music I did before RG went under - and 90% of that is outside Dunedin

  • Simon Grigg,

That Ladi6 vid is truly lovely.

As an aside, I wonder if Angie Stone has any idea how vocally influential she's been in a little country in the South Pacific?

  • Ben Austin,

Sad to hear about the Dunedin music buying scene decline. Kind of hard to believe really, given the choice that used to exist even 10 years ago.

Also, from an old Wired story, but still cool - Geo-tagging and tourist photo clusters in London

  • Bruce Wurr,

While I wasn't so keen on the funky stuff it was great to hear ladi at the royal festival hall.....particularly the speaking in between!

btw, I'm sure no one needs to be told this but get along to Gang of Four, they're fantastic. While it's not the original rhythm section they're still very, very relevant.

There is also a letter from Nyan's mother in the latest NZ Gardener magazine that talks about him as her gardening companion for the 4 years of his life. Fills me with admiration for his parents and their beliefs in a world full of Garth MCVicars.

Also just because. Prefer the Black Light version, but this has a video.

Would have been keen but opted for Swans in March instead, as I can't afford both (capital: it fails me now ...). Were you the one on the thread a while ago talking about the Swans and Neubauten shows? If so, any, er, feedback?

  • Russell Brown,

Ladi6 had a great show last night, with a very up-for-it crowd of about 500.

"Where did all you people come from?" she asked, noting that when they did a fundraiser for their European trip at the beginning of the year 100 people had turned up.

They're clearly still working out how to do the new album live, but you can see how it's going to be a killer club show by the end of the summer.

Props also to MC Silva, who did an enjoyable dancehall set, then came back on during Ladi's set for '98 Till Now', which was totally bangin'.

I missed Homebrew, but I met some of their fans. Very friendly people, Homebrew fans. High rate of bucket-bong ownership, I'd wager.

And no, I wasn't the oldest person there.

    I didn't see this coming:

Not getting too excited, we have plenty of other poisons and potions from the alchemists garden.

Oh blow. That didn't work at all. Tried to delete and give it another go. And will try again.....NOW!!

Dismay!! How does one link video? I used "embed" which gave me the details above. Thought I'd get a picture.

Nope -- in comments here you just need the YouTube URL, not the embed code..

    I've fixed it for you.

Oh thanks Russell. (For a moment, I thought it had magically done it by itself.)

  • Russell Brown,

Chris Graham tweeted a little bit of video of '98 Til Now' from last night.

The mic on the phone is freaking out with the bass, but it gives some idea of the vibe.

Talking about good things, do get to see The Social Network. The short history of Facebook but also about friendship, betrayal, class and snobbery, and America.

  • Steve Parks,

I'm looking forward to it - heard from reliable sources that it is pretty darn good.

Edit: wait, is it showing here already? Where'd you see it Geoff?

  • Russell Brown,

Yup, The Social Network is a good film.

I was surprised at how autistic they made Zuckerberg -- that's never been my impression of him -- but it's a groovy piece of cinema.

Of particular note: the brilliant soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
