  • Craig Ranapia, in reply to Julie Fairey,

There’s a scandal there alright, and it’s not about what type of door but about people who rarely seem to come through them to get the work done.

I look forward to Jordan Williams' furious press release demanding an amendment to the Local Government Act mandating the removal of work-shy Councillors... But no breath will be held.

May not mean anything, but somebody on Twitter has noted that the reporter’s by-line (Cherie somebody) has been removed from the online story.

    It's still there.

Fine infomercial here for a product that could help monitoring the Mayor, and any guests.

The TU should stump up the funds.

  • martinb,

Wait- on the front page of the Herald there are calls for recall elections. On the basis of 'secret rooms'.

The Herald. Gutter journalism since I don't know about a year ago. Before Granny was a Tory from on high, now she's down and dirty.

  • martinb,

Sorry, I told a lie. There is not one BS Len Brown story on the front of the Herald web page. There are two.

  • Kumara Republic, in reply to Gareth Swain,

Why do people support (by buying) the Herald when that is its standard of journalism? Is it because there's no better alternative?

It's had a monopoly on the AKL market since the Auckland Star folded in 1991. The ComCom needs to sharpen its claws. Yesterday.

Hmmm, so people really do just sit back and accept shoddy journalism because there's nothing else? Why, though? Even if there is no easily accessible mainstream source of unbiased, rigorously researched, properly edited news, wouldn't it still be better to stop buying the Herald?

(Sorry for harping on this... I'm strangely intrigued by it. Once again, I hasten to add that I'm not fishing for an argument; I really am ignorant about this, being so far and so long away.)

Because a lot of good, important journalism comes with it. Fisher, Nippert and others. Excellent magazine writing by the likes of Alan Perrott, etc. As vexing as it might be, the Herald is probably the best paper we have.

And I'm in a bar in Queenstown where the door to the bathrooms and the adjacent wall are covered in wallpaper depicting shelves full of books. Apparently this is not an uncommon theme in NZ interior design.

  • Rich of Observationz, in reply to Robyn Gallagher,

There are two secret hidden sex doors in the Oval Office

I was fairly sure there were three. Also, John Key has had a secret tunnel built from Premier House to the nearby US embassy. They did this at the same time as painting the gates grey.

Based the work I’ve had done, I’m pretty sure that $10k is a very reasonable deal to convert a room that isn’t a bathroom into one that is, in a high-rise block and to code.

"Why would the Herald publish a beat up"

Because, I suspect, there are those in the journalist pool who would really like to create New Zealand's version of the Fox News Network.

  • simon g,

    Wow. And wow again.

The editor – not a newbie intern, but the fricking editor – says, of Auckland councillors on Twitter:

“Maybe they’d all attend more if they had their own hidden rooms to muck about in.”

So, just to clarify this extraordinary mindset, when asked about councillors’ attendance she acts as their defence spokeswoman. Because they are not Len Brown, she is entirely uninterested in holding elected representatives to account. And – incredibly – is happy to admit it.

Ladies and gentlemen, our city, our newspaper.

And also, boycotts are much more effective against radio and TV slots because of their 24/7 nature - as Willie & JT found out the hard way with the Roastbusters controversy.

Eleanor Catton told a good old fashioned yarn. Victoria University Press marketed it as fiction. Spot the difference, boys and girls.
