Made for $500. Presumably US. Of course, the director actually runs a post-production house, so unless you've got your own post-production house it'd cost a few bob more. Astonishing stuff though. And now they've given the bloke a budget of $30 million to make a full-length movie of it.

Thanks Russell, and Orcon, for a great party. I wasn't there for the speakers, but I did manage most of the rest. It was just lovely to meet so many of you. Even if some people didn't wear nametags. Bloody lurkers. Next time, I will be carrying around stickers and a pen, and you will wear identification.

I was wondering if Ben Wilson and 3410 were fated never to meet for a while there last night. They must have spent two hours never quite running into each other. But they did, so that was good.
And 3410, that record I was blathering about was Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes' 'Don't Leave Me This Way (Dim's Re-Edit)'.

Oh, I have to have a wee squee. Last night, I met Tze Ming for the first time. Not only did she not disembowel me and feed my innards to her demon kittens, but we own the same t-shirt.
Have to say, kind of glad we weren't on a boat last night though.

I was thinking what a generally really nice bunch of people the PASers are, and interesting to boot. It strikes me this place would be even livelier than it already is, if only some of those lurky readers would just say something once in a little while. Sacha told me - and really? I wasn't interested how he knew this - that there are 40 readers to each post that's made. A little scary, really. I had this vision of people standing in a room in two groups. One yakking at a hundred miles an hour to each other, and the other group? Just listening. Very strange dynamic, and only one you could get away with online I suspect. Cos it is nice not to talk once in a while. Not that I'd know about that, of course.

ETA As suspected, a party with drunken lawyers followed by Jarvis Cocker just about did me in, so there was no way I could have post-show-PASed. I have no idea how I feel hungover without drinking a drop, either.

At 3am this morning, having just gone to bed I heard 3410 say good night, and headed for his home. PAS and music certainly brings minds together.I thought Lawrence Arabia (James?) was great too last night and that Shanghai Lils is just the digs eh?Shame it will make way for a motorway.Wonderful evening, great success Russell.

I'd be interested to see where it goes. I never thought I would say this, but I am in love with a bar of all things. Except it's not a bar, really, is it? It's like you walk through the front door, and you are transported to another time and place. Lovely, lovely, lovely.

I love how people you meet or have known connect with other people - that was a great social evening. So many wonderful surprises. Thanks to Jackie for rescuing me from our underperforming taxi services.
I understood they're moving the Birdcage/Lils rather than demolishing it. Heritage building. Doubt it will feel the same as enjoying fine company under a motorway overpass with gauche statuary, 80s brickwork - and authentic Auckland leakiness as someone described it.

That was counting the number of responses and the number of views here. Usually works out at 20 to 40 depending on the topic and other random factors. I think it was Tim who reminded me last night that they're probably page views rather than unique people (doh), so ratio is probably slightly smaller. Verifies what Clay Shirky and others say about proportions of activity in online communities, anyway.
There's always a group of head-nodders per yakker, and that's just fine. It's like civic life - many voters, few active supporters, even fewer candidates. We each contribute in different ways and move from one group to the other from time too time. They're not fixed, distinct blocs, and as you say certainly not when gathered face to face. We blend.
I realised last night that nametags might replicate some of us being more visible than others by reputation and I probably prefer a more level playing field offline. Everyone's interesting and wonderful to meet, though I do appreciate differing levels of comfort with that.

A lot more than slightly, I would think. I read a whole lot of pages where I don't comment, and I load a lot more pages than the ones I contribute to. It would apply to most regular commenters, I imagine.

That Media 7 moment on The Jacqui Brown Diaries was a strang (but compelling) moment indeed. Did she sneak into TVNZ in disguise?

The heritage part of the pub will be dismantled and reconstructed a little further up the hill and the dodgy lean-to that constitutes the Birdcage will be bowled.
But I gather there's almost nil chance of the building continuing as a pub, let alone as Shanghai Lil's. They won't be able to get consent, so it'll become home to an ad agency or something.
But Russell will still have all those fittings. He's moved Lil's once (it used to be at the bottom of Anzac Ave), and I think he'd like to do so again.

They did it at The Classic earlier in the year, before a Media7 show. We shot it for them.
The scene as recorded was actually a little longer, and contained even more abuse from Jaquie, and me telling her off for drinking on the show.
The hardest part of it was keeping a straight face while she was abusing me.

Yes, Mr 3410 - make sure it happens. I did have a try at going up to everyone and saying "Who are you?" but being the shy retiring type I am I soon had to give up on that shit.
