  • Whoops,

    Way ahead of you.

Looking forward to receiving the Labour version (they tend to follow quickly around here)

That'll hit the bin as well.

  • Craig Ranapia,

And for your entertainment, The Aucklander lies by commission, omission and fuck-witted Nazi analogies:

In wrapping up a process intended to give the people of Auckland a say, we'll start by quoting a letter mailed to The Aucklander during the referendum period:

    "To who's interested:

"This is the first time in my life I have written a 'public' letter. But since The Aucklander asked to state one's view, I thought I'd have a go.

"The way the Government is pushing through this new proposal reminds me of the time I was 12 years of age. The German Army, marching into Hilversum, a town of 80,000 people at that time, took over council matters and appointed an "ortscommandant" replacing the mayor, although he was still in office in name only.

"Somebody compared Rodney Hide with Adolf Hitler, which I find not quite fair. Perhaps he could be likened to the ortscommandant."

If The Aucklander wants to compare Rodney Hide to a Nazi, perhaps it should try to look and sound a little less like the Völkischer Beobachter...

  • Sacha,

I'm not clear how printing a dodgy letter from a codger is lying.

  • Steve Barnes,

Oh, OK Craig. Your point is?

Do you approve of the way in which the Government is setting up the new Auckland Council (the 'Super City')?
    No: 8118
    Yes: 358
    Total: 8476
    Yes: 4%
    NO: 96%

Seems like a thing we should be taking notice of but you seem to think a quote from an octogenarian correspondent to the paper enough to dismiss all this out of hand with a Nazi smear?
What the guy, actually, said was

"Somebody compared Rodney Hide with Adolf Hitler, which I find not quite fair. Perhaps he could be likened to the ortscommandant."

    which I find quite appropriate.
Your admiration of Mr. Hide is quite unsettling.

I can't see how this is lying either. It's a letter from a reader.

  • Sacha,

I get the point raised earlier about their undeclared alliances. Is that what you meant Craig? Or is it their use of polling, which seems a pretty discredited practice all round by now.

Most petitions get 100% approval from the signatories, you know.

  • Russell Brown,

Interestingly, Media7's researcher was told last week that there were 10,000 votes from the form in the paper alone, and that the website numbers would send the total "into the stratosphere". This has not proved to be the case.

But while the Aucklander has made a royal balls-up of its "Referendum", the paper has generally done a very good job in its campaign on the flawed Super City process.

And you don't have to look far back to find far worse behaviour -- like NBR's weird and nasty Dick Hubbard hatchet job, which was supplied to John Banks campaign, resulting in the resignation of Banks campaign manager, and hilarious attempts at dissociating himself from the nastiness on the part of Aaron Bhatnagar.

Then of course you had Bhatnagar's inappropriate use of Wikipedia in the next election.

Thank you for that Russell - a lovely trip down Memory Sewer.

Russell: If The Aucklander can't honestly represent the nature of their "people's referendum" (or the limitations of self-selecting sample) I'll stand by the L-word. Though to be fair, APN doesn't seem to place statistical literacy high on the required skill set for employees so The Aucklander might be run by fucking morons rather than deceptive partisan hacks.

I'm probably also way out of line assuming that The Aucklander exhibits any editorial judgement in giving that sick fuck Nazi comparison the prominence it did. I rather doubt you'd be quite so indulgent if The Herald had lead off a front page news story with a reader's letter comparing Helen Clark to Stalin or Robert Mugabe.

And you don't have to look far back to find far worse behaviour.

    And your point?

Your admiration of Mr. Hide is quite unsettling.

Steve: Its rather difficult to be unsettled by your admiration of crass and stupid Nazi comparisons being thrown at people you don't like, because it isn't actually a surprise.

Agreed. I mean come on, of all the letters to quote... and "in wrapping up" the whole thing? And without taking any distance from it? It's hard to fault Craig's judgment on this one.

  • Sacha,

No one's disgreeing with that. The claim of "lying" seemed disconnected, and I'm still not clear how their use of poll numbers is any less kosher than many other media outlets.

The sample is just as ridiculous as that of online polls, but the questions are far more leading. Which is actually one hell of an achievement if you think about it. Plus the regular Granny's polls are never dressed up as citizens' referendums.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

    Fair enough

Soo, a few of you think the Aucklander is left wing and slightly left bias?
So what are the stats on the Auckland vote? How left is the vote?I know as, and in, Auckland, alot of us take a bit of time to complain loudly, but I did think a few Aucklanders got loud at the last mine protest up Q St. I haven't found evidence of across the board, really good journalism in the local papers so why is, or should, the Aucklander be any different. Hell, look at the front page of the Herald. Last I looked, your views on the budget was in speech bubbles that complained about anyone complaining about it being unfair to the lower income earners, was just stupid or greedy. Lovely. If I did a survey, I think I might realise if the questions were a bit loaded, but I also know, I'd defend the left. The right has a good marketing strategy, it's fuking slick if you ask me. I'd say I've gotta hand it to them, but it's nothing I respect so I wont. If I was the Aucklander and got a result I wanted, I'd publish. There were 8000 odd Aucklanders that didn't like it. If not good enough for a poll, at least 8000 Aucklanders got involved. What's the problem? Someone chose a sensational piece of a "your views"for the paper, and it's pushed buttons,Isn't that what the Sunday papers do? Maybe there should be better rules to make sure it's all nicey nicey letters to the Paper?
Jus' sayin', y'know it's Sunday eh?

  • Sacha,

Eh? I agree that there are concerns about the way the
"poll" was constructed and presented. I don't believe that justifies claims of "lying" but I understand how it might irritate.

None of that stops me appreciating that The Aucklander has been about the only publication consistently fisking the stream of bullshit from the politicians slyly shafting this city.

Oh Sacha I didn't mean you. just your words was where it went, so I was trying to tie everything up as one. I'll blame the quirky Irish, Mex ancestry. I'm confusing I know. In my head I'm completely sensible, but you knew that. :)
