  • giovanni tiso,

Bugger me, I thought the original quote was by Eleanor Roosevelt. Oh well, you live and you learn.

OMFG, did I just defend John Key's English?

Not to worry, whichever way you look at it "quantum faster" is still wrong.

  • Paul Campbell,

Well I guess part of my (slightly) pro-ATM bias is that I've been doing digital TV for a while - it and ATM go together really well - many cable TV headends are in essence just big ATM switches with modulators hanging off them (there's a reason why transport stream packets are 188 bytes long - each fits in 4 ATM cells) - a lot of IP data in cable plants float around on ATM as well

  • Tom Beard,

It's been around since at least 1999

That link should carry a warning about not being safe for diabetics. A page of "inspirational" quotes from Mariah Carey, Nike slogans and Touched by an Angel : that's one hell of a gooey, sickly mess :-)

At least I now know who Elvis Stojko is.

    Yup.

I'm more than a little concerned that Matthew even knew of the page. Do you think we need to stage an intervention?

I'll be charitable and assume that Google was involved.

Master Oogway... a plagiarist? Say it isn't so!

Bloody animated occidental reptilian mystics... you can't trust them!

Actually I had heard the saying before (unattributed floating vague familiarity style), but Kung-Fu Panda was the most fresherest reference in my head when I originally typed in the quote.

Big O has had broadband via a fibre optic cable for 5+ years. There's less than 50 permanant residents, but it helps to have 4 businesses with international profiles. Especially if one is a Famous & Forthright Photographer who would not take No from Telecom...we'll loan Andris to your small dial-up rural community for a modest donation to the community association (offers of less than 6 figures plus the brillant man's keep - did I mention he is a gourmet? Has an extensive cellar? Is habituated to venison, 'bait, salmon, blue cod, crayfish etc.?- will be genially chuckled over-)

  • John Holley,

One of the key things for FTTx etc. is being innovative and not doing fibre like we always have e.g. trenching, requiring skilled technicians to splice everywhere.

In the USA there are some innovative approaches to doing this that allows the rollout to be conducted by unskilled workers, requiring minimal spicing and no trenches.

Read what James Hettrick did in Loma Linda, CA. He gave this presentation at ALGIM last year.

  • Peter Ashby,

Here in Scotland the Executive oversaw a broadband rollout over the whole country using a mix of the installed cable, ADSL and wireless for remote communities. We have professionals who can work from home relocating to the Highlands and Islands for the lifestyle and reinvigorating local schools with their kids. The population of the Highlands is increasing again after years of depopulation and its incomers doing it rather than locals doing bunny impressions and chaining up the kids (might lead to dancing anyway).

Think of it this way. the govt is for eg offering immigration and other inducements to people like doctors providing they go rural/small town. After enjoying European levels of access many are going to be put off by dialup, but not the Scottish type model.

Here in the outer suburbs of Dundee we have cable past the house and to the house. Cost iirc £50 for a connection across the front garden, into the house (including two points, one upstairs, one down). We did it partly so we can never, ever have to deal with British Telescum again and partly so we can complain that there is nothing to watch over a gadzillion tv channels at 8pm every night. Our internet is rock solid, can't remember the last time it failed. Telewest/Virgin have doubled our speed several times for no increase in cost. We are currently on 10Mbs (theoretical) unlimited but subject to traffic shaping if we misbehave (or when we get the wife's X-Box connected to the net).

It's just that I know of your extra-curricular bent, you see, and we all know that actors are - shall we say, odd?

Look, the skirt and pigtails were done as a tech, not as an actor :P
And you also know how long I've been online. That makes me rather odder than my thespian tendencies ;)

This is very true. When you've grown used to fat tubes in the middle of nowhere, you're going to be distinctly unsatisfied by 9.6k skinnyband-over-number-eight-wire. I recall seeing an article on Granny that quoted an immigrant who loved nearly everything about the NZ lifestyle; except for our abysmal internet connectivity. The speeds, in part, but also the woeful caps at exorbitant prices.

  • Steve Barnes,

Key himself enthused to students in at Waitara College that they would be able to "download a movie in seven seconds".

    Ok I'm guessing here but the numbers that flash into my head go like this;
100Mbps= theoretical top speed of the offering (ADSL2?)
    7 seconds= 700mb file
700mb file= Xvid DVD rip feature film
Xvid DVD rip feature film= illegal download
Ah, good on ya JK, the free market rules, eh?

Internet speeds are measured in bits per second.

    Files are measured in bytes.

So 100 Mbps could never lead to a 700 MB file after 7 seconds, even theoretically. It would be 56 seconds.

ADSL2+ has a theoretical limit of 24 Mbps.

  • Matthew Poole,

100Mbps= theoretical top speed of the offering (ADSL2?)

VDSL would be the DSL variant that could offer 100Mbps over copper, but it drops off very rapidly as you move further from the exchange. Fibre's got no theoretical peak speed, but since we'd probably be using an ethernet-based system it'd be a peak speed of 1Gpbs (at present, and probably for the next 10-15 years given current technology costs and limitations).

Your numbers are also off. 100Mbps=10MBps (small b=bits, big B=bytes) is the rough rule-of-thumb that networking types use to account for protocol overheads. The movie would be 700MB not 700Mb. At 10MB/s a 700MB movie would take 70 seconds.

If Key's seeing GbE to the home your 7 second calculation works, but given how obscenely expensive current connections are I just don't see it being affordable except to the very richest of households. For a statement made to kids going to a public high school in a low-decile area, it doesn't add up. He was just, as per usual, shooting from the lip without actually having a skerrick of understanding to support his assertions.

But wouldn't they be a tad dull and uninteresting with minimal spicing? If you're going to pay all that money why go for bland unskilled workers?

I got broadband installed at my mum's place a couple of years ago during a visit and because I needed them to get it done before I was due to fly back and they were mucking me around I had to do most of the from-the-cabinet work myself. That's about as unskilled as it gets, and it was 100% free to the company.
