  • Helga,

Truthiness is my favourite, though the much-suggested post-truth has greater currency. Something with truthiness sounds juicy and appealing and I notice that the spell-check on here knows it!

  • Rebecca Gray,

Could the word just be "2016"?
Usually the year's number is not spoken about as though it means much but this time it's taken on its own implications.

    - Oh no, my favourite musician died!
    - I know, 2016 right?
    - Did you hear this other guy cancelled his tour? I wonder...
    - SHHH don't say anything! 2016!

    - I can't believe this just happened...
    - All your predictions are wrong. 2016 strikes again.

    - Could things get any weirder?
    - We've still got more of 2016 left, so...

    - What the hell is going on in the world??
    - 2016!!

(edit - I note someone already suggested this further up)

Probably “yuge” should be thrown somewhere in the mix, or under a passing bus

I'm surprised you seem to be the first to go there.

Gas lighting is valid concern. The term has a long history in some circles especially for how narcissists control women at home or at work

I don't normally nominate the words, but I fear we're in danger of overlooking the contributions of our Scots brethren.

    Cocksplat, fucktrumpet and and numpty.

Actually, Cocksplat, Fucktrumpet and Numpty, which sounds more like a law firm.

Bigly also sounds like a Homer Simpson phrase. Other than money and power is there much difference between Homer Simpson and Trump?

The Teen Vogue article is an interesting and valid use of the term, I think. It applies equally to what we know of Russia's disinformation strategy, which aims in part to make people think there is no objective truth, everything is questionable, nothing makes sense.

    So, it must be so.

This is a difficult word to use correctly , as its full meaning is : -
" . . . .because there is no disagreement with all that I have , as yet, refrained from iterating , it therefore follows that . . . "

    ’Great!’
…as in Trump’s ‘Make America Great Again’
and infinite variations on his standard wheedle:
“I have a great company, great company, we do great things, many, many great things, we’re gonna make jobs, great jobs, many, many great jobs…”

‘Great’ also manifests as ‘Tremendous’ and ‘Best’…

Look, the word of the year is what politicians and TV reporters are always telling us to do, because, look, if you don't look, you can't see, because look, do you see?

  • JessicaRose, in reply to Jenny Kay,

I just read a cosmo for the first time in about 20 years. It was, I hate to say it, quite good. Fantastic article on emotional abuse in relationships, and associated definition of gas lighting. So that's twice I've heard that this year.

But as a result I'm going to formally submit AF, and give co-credit to Carol.
Turns out AF is definitely word of the year in the gossip mags.
