  • recordari,

This reminds me of using HitList way back in the 90s. Used to love trying to work out how the search strings arrived at our page. One I recall was; 'what causes flatulent'.

    Yes sir!

41 visits at an average 3.34 pages and 5.39 mins.

Now you're just scaring me. You really do know everything, don't you?

Nah, I think Konqueror's in there somewhere.

  • Michael Hogan,

As a long time Firefox fan, I am not surprised at these stats,(except the dial up and Netscape wonders - even IE is still a bit surprising...) I would however, love to know what all the fuss is with Chrome, and if it is so great, why is uptake so slow amongst your tech saavy (sadly not me) audience? Has Google lost a bit of mana re: privacy?

  • recordari,

Almost tempted to dig out the old PC in the roof space and fire up Netscape 2.0. 'Why?' seems like a valid question at this point however.

    What's so good about Chrome?

Thinking of all the platform combinations and browser variants a developer needs to check (although it isn't quite as bad as it used to be, is it?) makes my head hurt. Table rendering, line spacing, and page widths all used to go haywire depending on if it was IE, Netscape or the early Safari. Mind you, I was a messy coder.

The old G3 OS 10.2 tower at the recording studio seems to be waaaaay faster with Opera than any other browser...especially for watching Dane Rumble videos on youtube.

I doubt it. My guess is twofold:

    a) Firefox is already a very very good tool, especially for designers & developers - Chrome is still catching up on dev tools. I imagine it's the same with low uptake of Windows 7. If you're still running XP the reason to upgrade is far less convincing - I bet most of the Windows 7 users had vista.

    b) Chrome wasn't available for the Mac until much later on. Since all the release furore died down months ago, I don't even know if many Mac users even realised. I only installed it a month ago.

I am surprised at how many mac users aren't on firefox though. Didn't realise Safari was so well regarded. Now I think about it, maybe I only use Firefox because I only recently moved away from PCs.

  • Michael Hogan,

Cheers. Sounds like a browser "developed for developers" Will give it a whirl when I do the full monty over to Mac. Right now Firefox/XP has kept me pretty happy. Burnt once, smart twice on early adapting...!

  • Matthew Poole,

Has Google lost a bit of mana re: privacy?

Not so much privacy as just insane levels of ubiquity. They own your search, they quite possibly own your email, they want to own your phone (I'm getting an HTC Desire as my next toy), and computer (we've all heard that Google are making an OS, right?). Do they have to own your browser too?!

  • bmk,

These statistics come from Google Analytics, which gives us 89,519 visits and 276,648 page views as of this morning (most of the other figures were current as of yesterday afternoon when I wrote most of the post, number nerds). Our internal log records give us 160,008 visits and 687,411 page views. Go figure.

People like me who use their ad blocking add-ons to block Google Analytics would contribute to this discrepancy I imagine.

In Dick Smith today replacing a defunct router, and their signage is reminding everyone to upgrade to Windows 2010 in September (IIRC). There's a pre-Christmas thought.

I don't like all that bold text

    Chrome = Google.
Google = copyright thief in a huge way.
I dont own any kind of Google tarpit, and am quite sure I will find adequate alternatives when I decide to investigate cellphones and/or ereaders and/or alternative OSs-

  • David Hood,

I use Opera on the Mac when reading public address on my work machine (and I'll thank Russell not to list the usage stats of that particular combo :) mostly because it keeps my personal stuff separate from my work activities (Safari with occasional dips into Firefox +Web Developer Extension to diagnose site problems or Zotero for research).
As to why people use Safari (which I do at home) Top Sites is gorgeous, intuitive, and with my web history searchable in a similarly pleasant intuitive manner (Top Sites in Safari is also why I do my personal browsing at work on Opera).
At home I will also use Omniweb on occasion, and DevonAgent (which I got as part of a software bundle many years ago) when I need to research a topic area quickly. My daughter, with an old G3 Mac running 10.3, uses Camino as the best browser for her vintage of machine.
Having a PPC macintosh at home, I can't run Chrome, so will use Stainless for the websites that would clog the browser.
Finally, on those rare occasions that I want semitransparent web browser windows so I can see the webpage and something behind the web browser window at the same time, I use Sunrise.
The Macintosh is not exactly short of good web browsers.

  • Jackie Clark,

Browsers are a funny thing. I am madly, deeply in love with Firefox, and use it both on the Mac and the PC - at home, and at work. It has it's issues - mine seems to get a headache from time to time (with apologies to Emma) and just shut down. But that's simple to remedy. And it's polite enough to ask if I want to save the sites I have been browsing, for next time, and it always apologises if it can't do that. I do love good manners.

  • Andre Alessi,

I started using Chrome after Firefox went from a small, fast browser to a memory hog. It'd slow down my 8 GB gaming system just by being open with two tabs and with no addons beyond NoScript and AdBlock plus.

I want a browser that lets me browse the Internet, not one that makes me wait. A the moment, Chrome's the clear winner in that regard over Firefox, and I appreciate its minimalism in other respects (e.g. installing addons doesn't require a restart of the browser.)

  • giovanni tiso,

I use Vito, my burly Italian cousin browser. It promotes adoption by dropping by other browsers and making comments such as "nice cascading stylesheets you have here, it would be a pity if something were to happen to them". Expect it to rise in the rankings quite quickly.

True, dat. I'd switch to something else but I can't yet be bothered rebuilding my bookmarks list.
