  • Luke Williamson,

Met Nick D at the Sawmill last year and begged him to do a second series. Interesting also that our kids really enjoyed it for its enthusiasm and music and travel. Good family viewing. Go Nick!

  • 3410,

And don't forget, you can still email me your geek culture questions for the Geek-Off

Would do, but can you narrow it down a bit?

  • Kim_Wright,

Long time lurker first time poster - Since I entered RB's competition it seemed the polite thing to do to join the posters. Exciting news about the collaboration.

Bit of a threadjack but it is music related; Is anyone else feeling just a little bit like a starstrcuk teenager about the upcoming gig by The Specials in Auckland? Yippee. I know old fart musicians re-forming for gigs to make dosh 20 something years after their heyday are sad as, but somehow because it's The Specials I just don't care - I'm there!

  • Danielle,

Making Tracks always made me feel like such a dorky fucking hippy. I was all 'we are one global village brought together by music!' whenever I watched it. Therefore, the Palestinian hip-hop crew doing 'Not Many' has made my morning.

I am all over The Specials show too. Yay. I don't think I can carry off a pork pie hat, though...

Just occasionally, not often, but occasionally, Auckland really is at the wrong end of the country.

Yes it is problematic - fingers crossed for grabaseat but I daren't book flights until I know who's selling the gig tickets - anyone have a clue?

Just wear it Danielle, it'll look way better

  • Sam F,

I have heard about these big concert ticket clusterf**ks (server crashes and instant sellouts) before. What's PAS' best advice in how I can avoid terrible disappointment on this one?

  • Paul Campbell,

I have to agree with Kyle, why can't they play down here - I missed them in Oz last month too - I'm still pissed about the stupid stadium - we decided last night that a better use of the $200M would be to buy lots of cheap tickets to Auckland and fly each rate payer to a concert every year

Yeah, just to be a spoilsport, The Specials without Jerry Dammers is like The Clash without Joe Strummer.

The promoter is Frontier Touring -- it might help to sign up as a member with them. They'll sometimes to a subscriber-only offer before public sales.

Otherwise, the ticketing agency is Ticketmaster and tickets are "on sale soon".

Yeah, just to be a spoilsport, The Specials without Jerry Dammers is like The Clash without Joe Strummer.

Some of us, Mr Grigg, were four years old when the first Specials album came out, so we're taking what we can get. :)

  • Russell Brown,

    From Wikipedia:

In 2007, Hall teamed up with Golding for the first time in 24 years, to play Specials songs at two music festivals. At Glastonbury Festival they appeared on the Pyramid Stage with Lily Allen to perform "Gangsters". In May 2009 Golding claimed that Allen's reuniting him with Hall played a "massive part" in the groups later reformation.

[4] Later the same day they played on The Park Stage, with Damon Albarn of Blur on piano and with beatboxer Shlomo providing rhythm, to perform "A Message To You, Rudy". At GuilFest, Golding joined the Dub Pistols to again perform "Gangsters". In 2007, Golding had been regularly performing concerts and recording with Pama International, a collective of musicians, who were members of Special Beat.

On 30 March 2008, Terry Hall stated that The Specials would be reforming for tour dates in Autumn 2008, and possibly for some recording.[5] This was officially confirmed on 7 April 2008.[6]

On 6 September 2008, six members of the band performed on the Main Stage at the Bestival as the 'Surprise Act'. As Jerry Dammers did not play at the festival and owns the trademark rights to the name "The Specials", the group was billed as "Very 'Special' Guests".
On 2 December 2008, the band announced 2009 tour dates to celebrate their 30th anniversary. It was announced that founder member Jerry Dammers is not set to join the band on the tour. Terry Hall was quoted as saying "The door remains open to him,".[7] However Jerry Dammers describes the new reunion as a "takeover" and claims he has been forced out of the band.[8]

On 10 April 2009, the reactivated band guested on the BBC Two's Later... with Jools Holland. The Specials will be touring with more festivals in Japan and Australia planned in August 2009.

On 4th May 2009, Lynval Golding and John Bradbury expressed their intentions to release further original Specials material at a later date.

A cool new dubstep remix of 'Ghost Town' ...

You can download it here, along with a totally wicked bootleg remix of Don Carlos/The Aggrovators' 'Late Night Blues'.

Now, I know you'll get this one..it's like The Attractions without EC.

Really, what's touring is more like a an extended Fun Boy Three, since the main creative ain't there.

I know I'm being grumpy and sour but I thought that the Specials of 1979 might've looked at that Jules video with some dismay. I thought the 50 year olds still in pork pie hats a bit sad.

But since I'm in the midst of my own revival gig, I'd better shut up.

cheers Russell, but after putting on my tinfoil hat the division betwixt them seems even odder.

    no matter.

and I don't know if anyone went to the neville staples gig a year or two back - that was 'stars in your arse' grade awfulness and the first gig I've ever walked out on.

It may be off-beam, but for your geeks debate...

"I can't understand why people are frightened by new ideas. I am frightened by old ones" (John Cage, 1912-1992). Discuss.

The Specials without Jerry Dammers is like The Clash without Joe Strummer [or] The Attractions without EC.

Reminds me of the time I saw the Beach Boys without Brian, Carl, Dennis, Al, Mike (who'd quit again, a few days previously) or Bruce (whose plane had been diverted due to bad weather, and arrived about 10 minutes after the show.)

and I was delighted to fear that the National Geographic channel had picked it up.

Is delighted to fear the feeling you have at the top of a bungee jump?
