  • Craig Ranapia,

News and other shows will often not use certain words. You probably haven't heard many swear words on the 6pm news, and if they're reporting on someone who said it they'll normally bleep it out.

Indeed -- and I don't think I'm the only person who thinks transmitting in prime time the more lurid and graphic testimony in the Westherston trial didn't serve the public interest as opposed to shock jock attention seeking.

  • mark taslov,

So even the "worst" word is acceptable in context.

Even these trends change however. When the 'bugger' ad came out the debate about that was on the news (can't remember if the newsreader said it or not). You wouldn't have had that on the news 20 years earlier (or on the ad).

But which way are these trends going? As I've said before, I find the word faggot immeasurably more offensive than say cunt or motherfucker ie. supplantable nouns, the former being oftentimes combined with adjective to offer high praise, rendering it pretty much neutral out of context. I'm constantly disappointed to hear kiwi friends use the term 'gay' derogatorily. I don't know what news channel you're watching Kyle but last time I watched I heard them mention that fucker Tane 3 times!

You're talking about "snakeskin" right? That was disturbing...

Even that's changing fairly rapidly, when it comes to interviewees swearing. I've heard "shit" on the news several times - largely from MPs, to be fair - and I'm pretty sure the odd "fuck" has slipped through (though they bleeped it conspicuously in post-match discussion of the soccer World Cup qualifier.) Words like "bloody" and "bugger" barely rate a mention.

An "unfortunate" side-effect of bleeping swearing is that it makes everything sound like 'fuck' if you can't see the lips, and if you can it's completely bloody pointless.

Still, I did consciously refrain from saying 'cunt' (for a perfectly good reason) on the radio last Friday. It just didn't feel right.

  • Paul Litterick,

I think we are missing the point that Paul Henry's role is to provoke offence. It brings in the viewers: to have cause for taking offence is part of the entertainment.

Much as I sympathise with the campaign of protest to advertisers, I doubt its effectiveness and I won't be joining it. I could not say that I will not be watching Breakfast until That Man goes, because I do not watch it. I doubt many of us here do

We are not the right demographic and the advertisers know that. Their demographic is fed emotion constantly by their media: emotional provocation is what the audience has been trained to want, whether the emotion involved be mawkish sentiment, outrage or outrageousness.

In short, welcome to hyper-reality. I am more concerned about NatRad, which should be above this sort of thing, jumping on the emotional roller-coaster.

But some organization out there is banning words and combinations thereof.

I fear Mr Talslov has faked an Organisation. Unless, of course, you were referring to the FCC Mr. T
As celebrated by the inimitable Mr. Eric Idle

He's not retarded or mentally defective and he's not an imbecile or an idiot. However, all of these words have been used by policy people in the past to label people like him and thus deny them their humanity.

True. Though it might be nice if at least occasionally it came at the expense of rich white wankers instead of the usual targets.

Yes, anyone who threatens that they will not buy something from an advertisement because of offense taken to some buffoonery in a show is probably in the 'too hard' basket. Advertising is meant to slip in under your consciousness, not be something you consciously choose to buy because you liked the show it interrupted.

Mindfully approach your nearest police officer, try "you are a fucking cunt." or alternatively, head to your nearest printers, print and distribute names of name suppressed entertainer. You'll soon find out my fake organizations are incredibly lifelike. I wish I could open the link, MP or latter work?

  • pollywog,

lo fi guerilla television would be way more interesting...a gunge hit squad with water guns spraying the 'boobs on bikes' parade or a bucket of shit thrown at offensive personalities going about their everyday business by masked persons who then make a well planned getaway, filmed from a few angles and youtubed.

    that sort of thing:)

Au contraire Mr. W. Advertising is a way of having fun with your profits as opposed to giving it to the taxman. Why else would someone cough up ten grand toward a party for a bunch of internet geeks.

ORLY, Paul? I'm going to be dragging my pointy headed elitist arse down to Wellington next February to squee all over Neil Gaiman among other things-- and have quite happily cancelled my booking at Heritage Hotels' otherwise perfectly agreeable central Wellington establishment. (An establishment, may I note, that doesn't exactly target or price itself at the cheap and cheerful/backpacker end of the market either.) If City Life Wellington can afford to do without over five hundred of my dollars, good on them -- they're obviously doing a lot better than my industry contacts in Wellington would suggest is the norm.

It's OK if you rapidly follow it with the word "Stable". The Officer would then have to prove they were a virgin for it to be defamatory. It is not the words, per se, but the intended offence.

I can't remember the advertising...it must have worked. They were advertising Panadol? I felt strangely compelled towards it on Saturday.

And I think we both have misgivings about the name of the "invalid's benefit".

In a way, that gets me more than "retarded" does. The latter is obviously a thing of the past; a word used by fools. The former is something I'll probably have to sign up my kids to. I can't help hearing "invalid" as in "not valid".

    Mark sat for a time pondering; cunt......stable, cunt....stable, cunt..stable. damn. :D

In the first case yes. The second it's most assuredly the words. I'd sincerely like to see someone try to get arrested intending offence using only compliments.

I recommend deliberately pronouncing it that way. Especially when around those who had a chance to change its name but chose not to.
