  • Joe Wylie, in reply to Sacha,

    Apparently not.
According to the article Hebe linked to above, a total of 13,935 votes were cast in the by-election for Burwood-Pegasus, way down on the 2010 figures.

Very low, even for local body elections, 15.3% down on 2010. Ward is pretty trashed, so many will not even be living there now. I'm intrigued that Linda Stewart, chair of the ward community board, got hammered: she came third with 1473, less than one-third of Beck's 4800. Guess voters realise that "being a local" is no guarantee of being an effective representative.

Nope - with the intro of postal voting on the West Coast, we get +60%

does it mean the "A team" no longer have a majority?

No, because Beck replaces a prominent B team member. But he is highly skilled at bridge-building and has a powerful intellect -- can operate on many levels. Parker and Marryatt will be taking note of the result.

  • Hebe, in reply to Sacha,

Wouldn't think he'd go next time, But who knows, the mayoralty will be up for grabs. Hence Lianne Dalziel positioning, and I can just about hear Tim Barnett manouvering (sp?) -- he is in town and on CTV last night. The right could well come up with someone credible. Should be a fine old scrap whoever stands, and the local body elections are only 18 months away.

  • Sacha,

Some 2010 local election turnout figures mentioned. Range from 31 to 71 %, averaging 48.

Ngaire is a gem, isn't she? Bob Parker especially treasures her ability to get her lines word-perfect. And, unlike Sarah Palin, she doesn't even have to write them on her hand. I smell a shitstorm acoming.

  • Hebe, in reply to Joe Wylie,

Rather than a levy, as proposed by the Greens, a series of earthquake bond issues by the CCC or CCHL could be the way to go. It could be very appealing to the Granddad and Grandma investors who are not in the finance companies because of the high risk but who need a stable income and want to help the rebuild. I wonder if it is possible.

  • Joe Wylie,

From the Press comments, this has to take the cake for utter unalloyed dopiness:

The silent majority support Bob Parker here in Christchurch. He is visionary, positive and gets the job done. A group of 3000 protestors rounded together by the local Labour party groupies doesnt truely represent local opinion. Thank goodness we have Mayor Parker as opposed to Jim Anderton who would clash with the minister Brownlee and the Government. Nothing would get done!

Depends if you're going in spirit as well as body. I am inclining to not wanting to know, but that's this week. I may change; or I may just spend the time treasuring my nearest and dearest, feasting, doing the adoration of the woodburner, thanking the heavens for working water, power and sewers, and mulling paint charts (we are now officially in the EQR labyrinth).

BTW, found some good recent pics of the Anglican Cathedral on Twitter but I'm unsure of reposting etiquette. By a man called Motmunter.
