  • Matthew Poole, in reply to James W,

Does New Zealand not have a parody defence like in the U.S.?

No. And even in the US that's a defence for civil claims relating to infringement of copyright and trademark, or defamation, not against criminal charges.

A law change has been on the table, but currently stalled in Parliament.

Yes, I understand that's the way the police work now. But is there a reason why they have to work that way? Particularly since the current system clearly isn't helping produce a culture that adequately protects half the population in the event of a particularly traumatic crime?

Which means I’m quite happy to say they’ve lied about their progress after Louise Nichols, in as many words. But for more than that, show me the fucking proof!

In so many words: one or more sworn police officers have actively lied to their superiors and the public about the lack of formal complaints against the rape gang. I think that reads better.

... hating on the cops over this, and my unwillingness to join the trendy pile-on rankles you

Ah, I see: being angry about this is a “trendy pile-on” rather than a perfectly reasonable response.

This is all volatile enough without you adding a here-say allegation sunshine.

The poster Bomber removed illustrated how a lot of people are feeling today.

And in you not could make this shit up news, the police have threatened Martyn Bradbury with six months’ imprisonment if he did not take down an image parodying police inaction.

Oh FFS, I think PASers know my opinion of Bradbury but this is ridiculous. Even if I thought this was one of those times Bomber had gone screamingly OTT, more often than not the best response is just to ignore him until the rush of over-oxygenated blood to his head recedes.

How the fuck is ANY girl or woman who has been raped supposed to have ANY faith in the police to do their goddamn job now? It’s not as if getting rape victims to make a complaint is a walk in the park in the first place. The damage from this entire debacle is incalculable.

Let’s walk this out a little further – why should ANYONE subjected to domestic violence? (You know, you might be dressed immodestly or have booze in the house.) Why should the GLBT community, or sex workers or Maori/Pasifika who, whether you like it or not, do have *cough* historical trust issues with the Police?

What really fucks me off about people like Greg O’Connor is they think the respect the Police enjoy is given as of right, as opposed to being earned ever damn day. And, I shouldn’t need to say, richly deserved by plenty of frontline officers who should be as angry as everyone else with a micron of human decency, if not more so.

    Matthew:

I’m not going to repeat that rather distasteful turn of phrase Russell has deleted, but let me assure you that the only thing that is tumescent today is my utter, seething contempt for rapists, and the enablers and apologists who make it so damn easy.

Do me the fraking courtesy of assuming my anger and contempt at the people who’ve reminded me why I didn’t report my own rape – and going to the Police was NEVER an option – is very far from a “trendy pile-on”. I’m not the only rape survivor here you've been incredibly patronizing and dismissive towards, so just cut it out.

  • Sofie Bribiesca, in reply to Lucy Telfar Barnard,

women will somehow provide a civilizing influence (sorry if that’s not what you meant, Pops). But would they? Or will they feel the need to be more blokish than the blokes in order to ensure they have a career? Will they, like male officers, come from part of society that thinks that the standard of consent for women or girls who wear short skirts and/or drink alcohol is lower than for sober women in loose denim coveralls?

My (another of many) experience with a female cop around Ponsonby was that she was nasty, racist, and more inclined to mistreat me every time she entered my local than the completely drunk (admittedly friends) white male acquaintances. I got dragged off to the corridor outside the loos, with her male counterparts, then bag searched, every time she spotted me in there. I never had any reason for this treatment. The only other person to suffer the same attempted humiliation was a local self employed business man. He often would be joining me. Well, he was part Maori, I part Mexican. Same same in her eyes. she was one fucking bitch.
Another time, attempting to take a complaint to the Mt Roskill Police station......yerp, never saw my car again, Apparently, because I was working I should save for another jag. The people who had mine, seemed like a nice couple to her and well, they were not up for any warrants so... just let them keep it.
I will never trust the Police in this country. I wouldn't put anything past them, so this is why the likes of me don't bother with making complaints about rape.My dealings with the Complaints/Conduct lot, yeah gave up on them after their treatment of me. Too many times...

We need a sad kind of PAS law where no matter how vile the cops actions are Matthew Poole will defend them to the death.

I don't think it even got out of MED before it was MoBIEd. It's not had a first reading.

And besides, that would be about copyright, not the Policing Act. When USAnians refer to the parody exception, I don't think they realise it's about using copyright material, and not about free speech in general. We don't have a free speech right enshrined in bullet-proof law.

BTW that section of the Policing Act is intended to prevent individuals passing themselves off as part of or affiliated to the force.

I saw it, I wish I’d downloaded it, it was really quite well done. And I don’t like Bradbury much either – too shrill by half.

Nice work on the advertisers by Giovanni Tiso link here - thought someone had already posted it here, but can't see it now.

I’ve sent an email to Countdown letting them know I won’t be shopping there any more until they can do better than a “non-committal” response. Would be nice to know who the other advertisers were without having to actually listen to the recording (which I’d rather not).

  • Kracklite,

I think that what needs to be done now is let people know about organisations such as Rape Crisis and Women’s Refuges.

This is the Wellington branch. Their funding is critically low – please make a donation.
