Watch Media 3 tonight (TV3, 11.20), to see Craig Foss doing an impersonation of a Minister of Broadcasting. A good story on the lack of locally-made children's TV too.

Well, I haven’t :)
Boring is relative; a live telecast of a conference of medieval historians would bore most people to tears, but some historians would be fascinated. (I’m not advocating for this, just to be clear. It’s an example.
And I’m NOT saying shows __should_ _ be boring. I admire entertainers- all power to their elbows. Who doesn’t like being entertained?)
But there’s something bland about most TV’s relentless focus on being entertaining (and popular). Amusing ourselves to death, very old idea.
I reckon public service TV, if such a beast ever again be seen on our shores, should aim differently. Inform and educate first and second. Satisfy niches. Do long interviews. With wonks. Build quality slowly and patiently.
That would probably not make it a ratings winner. It’d take a minister who backed it squarely. And maybe it’s too late: by the time any such beast could be hatched, TV will be over. Still worth a shot, though. -

It's true... I'm nearly as old as our host, Mr Brown.. :)
I arrived in this country from it's nearest neighbour in Jan 81... that graffiti I mentioned was on that wall (or a close neighbour?) already... and stayed visible and un-painted-over for at least another five years, if not more after that.... I recall it as there had been a similar product on sale in Aus called Big-M, available in the same flavours. (choc, strawb, caramel, and banana on occasions but not all the time)
There was also another graffiti you saw at much the same time (heading into or out of town) on the concrete wall side of the under-pass where New North Rd passes under the Dominion Rd flyover/interchange that said 'feet this high, yah'- at an improbable height above the footpath of at least 2m if not 3... and it lasted for at least as many years...
Those Zap ads you linked to from the 90's were a re-launch of the product... I don't recall if it went off the market completely, or simply fell into low-popularity/sales in the mid/late 80's... ?

It's there, but it's behind a SKY paywall. What we get on free-to-air are for the most part extended toy commercials.

I reached the end of the show wondering why we bother having a minister of broadcasting. He won't intervene in anything, won't advocate any funding for anything, isn't interested in the structure of a 'free market' or how the government has got tangled up advocating frequencies.
Felt like we could put him on the back bench and at least save the salary and the ministerial car and really not notice any difference.

Well, in spite of all the doom and gloom and the way no one in government seems to care about the quality of TV, Q&A and Native Affairs have done well, I think. I enjoyed them both anyway and the response to the latter seems to be ecstatic. John Campbell is on fire ...
I shuddered when Ian Wishart popped up on Q&A but he was roundly dealt to. All good. Look forward to Media 3 this week.
