  • Paul Williams,

First comment, surely not? Either way, congrats Russell. It's a little overdue and I suspect it'll go great. Only sorry I'll not be able to enjoy here in 'straya.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Ironically, I'm at liberty to tell you all this because some of it has been broached in a column in the Herald's business supplement on Friday morning. The first I knew of it was in an email from a reader that said: "John Drinnan seems to imply you have the programme because you support the Labour Govt and the EFA."

John and I have had a frank, but personal, exchange about the story. He insists there was no such implication, and I take him at his word. But the Electoral Finance Act still seems an odd and arbitrary thing to associate with the show, which is part of my professional life: not "founding host of Mediawatch", or "made panel discussions sort of hip" or "wrote 'digital future' papers for public media agencies", "won the first Qantas award for blogging", or even "blagged the beer for Kiwi Foo Camp", but …the EFA?

Um, yes... David pointed the item out to me, and I briefly considered dropping Mr. Drinnan a line suggesting that Labour Party sock puppets don't give regular air time (and a very free hand) to dyspeptic Tories ... but thought better of it.

No worries. I did it for you.

There's no paperwork, but I guess it's alright to say that Craig will be on that list of writers ...

  • Russell Brown,

    First comment, surely not?

That's what happens when I post on a Sunday afternoon, clearly. I had a brief panic attack at the gig last night about how much I had to do before flying to Wellington for Webstock, but I got up and wrote two magazine columns and a lengthy blog post. And it only took half a bottle of wine.

Only sorry I'll not be able to enjoy here in 'straya.

Good point, and one I'll add to my list of things to discuss with TVNZ. There will be rights issues with archive content, but in theory there shouldn't be any real reason for individual segments to be geo-blocked. Thanks for reminding me.

  • Craig Ranapia,

You might be pleased (or not, as the case may be) to find out the __Media 7__ Depreciation Society is open for business. I see rich merchandising opportinities... :)

Now I've got to go watch the news. Purely for research purposes...

  • slarty,

Nice move. I shall look forward to it.

Guess I've got no excuse. Have to get a TV now. And a freevee thingy. Need to save my bandwidth for other things.

and well thank goodness for TVNZ on demand

  • Russell Brown,

Is there something about video on demand I need to know?

TVNZ delivers video in two different formats. The main site uses Windows Media as the default. If you install the Flip4Mac components for QuickTime, it will appears inline as a QuickTime movie. You can save this -- just click the down arrow on the right of the progress bar. Big advantage over Windows!

TVNZ ondemand is all Flash video (except for foreign programmes and Shortland Street, which cost money to download -- although that's going away soon) and harder (but not impossible) to save. But you should be able to pause and/or drag the progress indicator back to the start and let it load.

The ondemand files are high-quality and, thus, quite large, but they look great full-screen.

Man, they really need to get the message out to Mac users. See above.

  • Graeme Edgeler,

John and I have had a frank, but personal, exchange about the story. He insists there was no such implication, and I take him at his word...

And it's not even true to describe Hard News as a "a strong supporter of the Government approach to the Electoral Finance Act".

Can't Say I saw that imputation, but your undying love for the EFA was somewhat of a surprise ... and I thought the The Standard was going for the position of Kiwiblog doppelgänger.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Good on yer Russell. When I read John Drinnan's column on Friday morning, I guessed it was the new enterprise you had been alluding to.

John is a good journo but, in my experience, has a predilection for sniffing out real or imagined scandal.
We too are stuck in the MySky/Mac dilemma. I am seriously considering abandoning Sky, to replace it with Freeview--unless someone has a solution, so I can keep the Rugby Channel/TCM and the Documentary channel, whilst gaining access to Media 7.

Hope you call on a media academic or two, along the way!

Some rain here today, in the parched Waikato but we need lots more...

  • BenWilson,

Well done. Look forward to seeing it.

As for your partisan love of the EFA, I think what John was trying to say is that you haven't had a cry about it every single day like the fair and balanced media do.

  • Scott Hindmarsh,

Ads? With a Firefox extension 'adblock' and similar supporting extensions such as flashblock make the internet.. more palatable

I strongly suggest another extension 'NoScript'

Wait, Russell's nickname is the "love mussel?" When did that happen?

  • Tom Ackroyd,

Even more reason for ditching Telstra cable for Freeview terrestrial. I'll still be able to watch Prime on UHF and won't miss any other cable channels, except possibly Rialto.

Looking forward to the show, Russell. Is Mr. Frewen involved?

  • 81stcolumn,

    Congratulations you labour lackey you......

I hope the show goes well though it still may not be enough to convince me to get a tv or a tv card. I do hope the TVNZ thingy is agreeable though.

  • Idiot Savant,

So, now I have a good excuse to get a Freeview box.

Unfortunately, according to that same story, it looks like I should wait until much later in the year to get one that is actually basically functional. Bugger.

  • Terence Wood,

In particular, Hard News has been a strong supporter of the Government approach to the Electoral Finance Act. But it is understood that the new Media 7 show will have a number of participants. The series has been given funding for 34 episodes.

Can someone please explain to me the relationship between the first and second sentence above? And just what the 'but' is doing in there.

Implying something? or just angrily opposed to coherent paragraphs...

heh. isn't everything before a "but" in a sentence supposed to be a lie?

"it was the most fantastic dinner, but the pie was cold"

  • Andrew Moore,

Hi RB. Excellent night all round- James Milne's a genius! The Diciples of Macca bought the house down. The line up was a Lil Chief supergroup- Ryan McPhun, Jonothan Brunette, the label guy himself... and all wearing Macca masks. Highlights included Jet, Silly Love Songs, and a rousing finale of wait for it.... Mull of Kyntyre! Go the freaks!!!

  • Graeme Edgeler,

Can someone please explain to me the relationship between the first and second sentence above? And just what the 'but' is doing in there.

I think your first sentence is best considered in the context of the previous one. Consider the italicised bit below as essentially parenthetical to the now first and last sentences.

It will be presented by veteran commentator Russell Brown

whose Hard News blog on the Public Address website frequently defends the Government and is a counter to David Farrar's National-friendly Kiwiblog.

In particular, Hard News has been a strong supporter of the Government approach to the Electoral Finance Act.

But it is understood that the new Media 7 show will have a number of participants. The series has been given funding for 34 episodes.

Basically, the "but" acts as a conjunction with the previous paragraph, rather than the preceding sentence. Leaving the word order the same, I think the following is what was meant:

It will be presented by veteran commentator Russell Brown (whose Hard News blog on the Public Address website frequently defends the Government and is a counter to David Farrar's National-friendly Kiwiblog - in particular, Hard News has been a strong supporter of the Government approach to the Electoral Finance Act.) But it is understood that the new Media 7 show will have a number of participants. The series has been given funding for 34 episodes.

    And even more simply:

It will be presented by veteran commentator Russell Brown, but it is understood that the new Media 7 show will have a number of participants.
