  • Mark Harris,

mark, I would hesitate to call "corruption" too quickly. You underestimate, I think, the power of legitimate lobbying. As I've said elsewhere, the big companies and industry groups often have people whose only job is to deal with government at all levels. They spend quite a lot of money making sure their message gets across, they turn up to every meeting and bunfight, they get to know the officials and the elected representatives and they flatter them, possibly some wining and dining, ensure that they're called upon to preside at industry events and general warm, happy, fuzzy stuff. It's no surprise that government turns to these people when they want to know something about the industry and get captured, mentally, by the industry mindset.

Governments have always listened to the voices they hear most often.

  • Mark Harris,

But speaking of rampant stupidity, here's the latest "health measure" being adopted in America

It’s hard to believe, but true: under a law Congress passed last year aimed at regulating hazards in children’s products, the federal government has now advised that children’s books published before 1985 should not be considered safe and may in many cases be unlawful to sell or distribute. Merchants, thrift stores, and booksellers may be at risk if they sell older volumes, or even give them away, without first subjecting them to testing—at prohibitive expense. Many used-book sellers, consignment stores, Goodwill outlets, and the like have accordingly begun to refuse new donations of pre-1985 volumes, yank existing ones off their shelves, and in some cases discard them en masse.

  • Steve Barnes,

So. Simon. You mean to say that you don't download Vinyl?

But if it's on vinyl, well...

well, you and I do still buy it, and it's my format of choice

That cuts to one of my earlier posts (on that other thread) Added value. Even if you download a movie then, at this point in time, it is nowhere near to going to the movies. My point is that, some will contend, MP3s are inferior to vinyl.

With complete respect to you Mark, I'll stick with total and utter corruption there, obviously I have no evidence or need to suggest it is of a financial nature. But the instance you just outlined is nothing less than the perfect blueprint for the corruption of democracy by the few. Financial or not.

It's no surprise that government turns to these people when they want to know something about the industry and get captured, mentally, by the industry mindset.

word has it that a certain Miss W.H.T democracy has certainly been surprised by this.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

It would be different if truly innocent people are included, as was (sort of) the case with people who owned iPods before the format shifting laws,

I'd say that is alot of us.No intention to be a bad ass, all the consideration for artists, Just don't care about the hoopla, without wanting to deprive. If 25 payments are involved in listening, why not put it on my rates bill. I'll happily pay and if you are a household that doesn't use it, get your rebate. It's rubbish collection!

  • mark taslov,

I'm thinking more along the lines of corruption of vital thought processes, which induce elected representatives to introduce legislation, which allows recidivist downloaders to get away scott free with the warez. To suggest that the labels or copyright holders benefit from this is rather an oversestimation.

  • mark taslov,

I think in answer to the moot at the foo debate, it's not so much a question of 'is NZ fucked?' as, in what position is NZ being fucked, and are you enjoying it?

Interesting thing is reading some confuscious today, and how old Jesus and the christian faith has 'one hell' of a law suit looming if China ever decides to take copyright seriously.

Don't complain about the snow on your neighbor's roof when your own doorstep is unclean.

Love thy neighbor as thyself: Do not to others what thou wouldn't not wish be done to thyself: Forgive injuries. Forgive thy enemy, be reconciled to him, give him assistance, invoke God in his behalf.
