  • Russell Brown,

And once again, I'm thinking that it would have been nice to have had a media show on air now. Shooting the shooters would have made a good story.

  • Thomas Beagle,

I wish I could think up something witty to say about your "Social Media Export" typo.

  • Craig Ranapia,

What’s on the video isn’t that bad

I take your point, as far as it goes, but FFS... it was bad enough. If I'd had just come off a long-haul flight after the most crazy and intense week of my life, and quite possibly wanting to throw up and sleep for a week instead of doing a near sold-out gig that night? I wouldn't have posted (and promptly deleted) a few mildly snarky tweets, I'd have twatted someone.

  • Dylan Reeve,

Watching a good TV news camera operator in action can be a beautiful thing, they are really good at getting what they need, but in a situation like this where the focus is a single person in a confined area it's always going to get a bit silly.

Ultimately it likely in the future to get worse for Lorde. I hope she finds a good way of dealing with it to keep herself comfortable and safe while still managing to stay in touch with who she is.

  • Kyle Matthews,

Looked pretty clear that she came over to the media first to give them a few quotes and pictures, then went over to sign some autographs and have photos with fans, and then went to catch her taxi and get ready to perform in front of 10,000 fans that evening.

Diva must have been redefined when I wasn't looking. Seems like everyone got what was reasonable, unless they happened to be standing between her and a camera.

Yeah, but I think it all comes down to something Jodie Foster always say when asked why she ended up going to Yale rather than rehab -- surround yourself with people who see you as a human being rather than a commodity, and give you space to have a life not just a career.

Yeah, I do appreciate that camera operators have needs, but it’s not like she hadn’t given them plenty already. It seems like it was them getting between her and her family (and by her account, jostling her family to do so) that was the issue.

It’s interesting to look at who’s got the stories now she’s a Grammy winner. Principally, 3 News and Campbell Live, via David Farrier, who has been earning the trust of the family and the management for at least a year. That’s how you do it.

Ironically, TVNZ, TV3 and Prime could have been right on the inside of all this. But all three last year rejected a prop for a fly-on-the-wall doco following Lorde’s first US tour. It had been cleared by the management, but they lacked the vision to see what was happening and the nerve to take a punt. TV3 should be very grateful to David Farrier.

  • Sacha,

None of the 'news' stories had the important context about the recent stalking to get intimate photographs of Ella and her boyfriend. Might have helped readers understand why she was already on edge and using words like 'lecherous'. But I guess that takes a more secure editorial ego.

same old problem with our supposed leaders and senior managers, all across NZ society and business.

  • Robyn Gallagher,

Major airports know how to handle arriving popstars. Last year One Direction bypassed the public and exited out a side entrance, with the airport advising fans to stay away. It seems that Auckland Airport was well set up to handle all the fans who'd turned up, but perhaps they and Team Lorde hadn't expected the media situation.

I hope this is just some post-Grammys madness, and in future the sight of Lorde arriving at Auckland Airport won't be a media circus.

BTW, isn't this a curious New Zealand situation - the triumphant Kiwi returning from overseas success, met at the airport not just by fans but by people pleased that a fellow New Zealander had done something remarkable overseas.

I do love the shot of Guy Williams waving frantically & shouting "Thanks, Lorde!".

I won't be linking to the Daily Mail's trash stories claiming Lorde wore a "bondage bra" at her concert that night. Fucking weirdo creeps.

I wouldn't blame the airport management. The press contingent stampeding was the problem, not the fans.

I think she's knows and accepts that. But I also think she hoped, apparently forlornly, that in her home town she might be offered a bit more courtesy from a media that has had pretty awesome access to her.

That's how I read those tweets. I also read "the media's response" as that of a churlish spoiled entity that believes it has some special right to behave unpleasantly.

  • Craig Ranapia, in reply to Bart Janssen,

In the spirit of Damian’s recent post, I think the majority of the coverage of Cave Creek and the Christchurch Quake showed that “getting good footage” and not-being-an-arsemonkey aren’t mutually exclusive states. The latter in particular was a profile in grace and sensitivity under extreme pressure our media can, and should, be proud of.

So, Lorde not only really sucks at being a potty-mouth social media "diva," but she's also not quite got the hang of tabloid-trolling stage couture? Damn it, girl, even your fail is full o' win! :)

I was highly amused that the first question we hear her asked by a journalist in the Herald video is "How does it feel..." which is Williams' standard pointless-journo parody question.

  • Tristan,

The person yelling ‘she is getting away’ and talking about the excitement was Guy Williams. He was doing his usual rabble rousing stuff which is funny but not when the people he is there to take the piss out of (ie the media scrum) take it seriously.

He latter apologised for his behaviour on twitter which FWIW seemed genuine
