  • Kyle Matthews,

A good week for the resurgent Cabana with The Phoenix Foundation, Don McGlashan and Grand Prix all in the space of 7 days.

Can I take the space to talk up Reb Fountain who's touring with Don McGlashan and his band. Caught her live last year and her CDs have been on high rotation ever since. Should be a great gig.

Comedy Central have just implemented region locking on the online full episodes of the Daily Show and Colbert Report. Noooo!

    There goes my friday evening.

  • Kumara Republic,

With a bit of IP sleight of hand, you might be able to circumvent it. Ideas, anyone?

I've tried proxies in the past for the CBC hockey feed and it just butchers your bandwidth so the videos don't work. But I'm a yellow belt at best, others might have had more success in this kind of endeavour.

  • Isabel Hitchings,

Also that thing with the girls in the vid... I'm all for girls being sexeh on my laptop screen but in this case the guys in the vid were just guys being ordinary people and the girls were being sexy. Too much contrast for it to look like anything other than objectification. Though that word looks more loaded than what I mean.

I think you've put your finger on the thing that was non-specifically bugging me. It looks far more like some boy's fantasy than a party anyone has ever really thrown.

  • Paul Litterick,

The men are huddled together, the women are talking to each other; the women dance, the men watch: seems a realistic interpretation of a New Zealand party to me.

I've always found the full episode player to be worse than useless. When I miss a daily show I watch the individual clips (player, not much better than useless), they haven't locked that down as of this evening.

<Sounds cool. If they do make a movie with Green Arrow in it... I plump for The Dark Knight Returns. Pity Clint Eastwood's too old to play Batman in it now though.>

Yeah, its a great story, and it would translate well to screen, but I've grown found of Green Arrow recently based on his volatile head-strong nature, his desire to build relationships with the people in his life, the fact that he is sexually active, and doesn't sit around in Bat Cave brooding.

The Arrow's Batman impressions are just the icing on the cake.

Green Arrow (impersonating Batman): I was not surprised. for I always expect, the unexpected! (pretends to swirl the cape)
Hawkman: Ha ha ha! Do the cape again...

Also, Batman has his own movies. I think a good Green Arrow movie could be based on "Identity Crisis" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_Crisis_(2004_DC_miniseries)

OTOH, in the context of painfully limited world of hip-hop party videos, it's almost cinema verité.

  • Sofie Bribiesca,

The people-watching wasn't bad either. I rarely get to art events, so it was fun to witness the wealthy, the wise and the weird sluicing back the wine and shouting merrily at each other.

Heh, Yesterday one of the wealthy people commented to me that it was full of "well Known" types and just as much as the art (they look and support lots of it) there was much enjoyment at studying all the botox and cologen. She is a medical woman and by end of conversation we both decided it really wasn't for us.:)

And friends and fans of the Androids

Sometimes I am not up with the 8 ball.Sorry to hear about Steve, and really sorry for your loss Eric. Both good people in my life :( .xxx

Don't bother. The Colbert Report is the only current programme they have here. We only have nz comedy central of which there is much cringe on my behalf (hence my lower case nz,embarrassing.)

  • Joe Wylie,

. . . there was much enjoyment at studying all the botox and cologen.

Looks pretty good considering the vintage of those who've undergone the procedures, but doesn't move very much. For that kind of thing I guess you'd need to move in the sort of bootie-clappin' circles frequented by Mr. Brown.

I think I find the sort of depiction where everyone and everything is gorgeous and glamourous less "off" somehow - maybe it's easier to suspend disbelief for a whole fantasy than a partial one?

Yes, it was the wrinkles at the side of the forehead compared to the blocks of cheese embedded for frown removal.Add to that the cologen lips and the capped teeth and ...hey presto, isn't so and so looking so youthful these days? Of course that was a guys comment, which confirmed just how much "men" look above the waist. That was when the implants became the conversation. Kinda expressionless expression.;)

Saw a Lilly Allen clip on the box last night which was very well done country and western pisstake. Brilliant for the whole fantasy. Just watched that Smashproof one which I didn't like but the girlies were what you do see out on a Saturday night in Auckland and a 21st I went to recently on the Queen St was exactly that. Guys in skater/hip hop/usar lookalike getup. Girls, oh soo fine, stretchy clingy saxy . Tres Orkland for 21.

Word. The evening of Valentine's day was especially tragic this year: so many couples, she dressed up to the nines, he dressed like a sack.

That PNC video and song "Tonight" are the shit if anybody hasn't checked it out yet.

You'll have to turn off the song that automatically starts playing on the right of the screen and scroll down a touch to see the video and hit play.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Went to see Terence Davies' Of Time and The City -- "a love song and a eulogy" to the Liverpool he was born in, and which no longer exists.

Why the fuck aren't wonderful, heart-breaking movies like this being shown in the alleged Sunday night quality slot on One?

Oh, and it is a scandal that Britian's greatest living film maker has only made four features, one documentary and three shorts in thirty five years.

Maybe it's because he's also Britain's laziest filmmaker.

Seriously, though. Kubrick, who arguably is Britain's greatest decomposing filmmaker, didn't make a lot more than that.

My favourite non-NZ blogger on Of Time and the City.

  • Danielle,

I am still no better informed.
A booty clap is when a lady wearing a g-string claps. With her bottom.
TMI. I guess some things are better left mysterious.

'Normal people don't do that kind of crap', &c.

As someone who has (drunkenly, natch) experimented with the booty clap in the privacy of her own home, I must say that it's quite difficult to get the appropriate rhythm going. It's a bit like a hula hoop, or twirling nipple tassles in opposite directions. I doff my cap to those young ladies.

The difference being, Gio, that Kubrick's deal with Warner Brothers basically meant he got to make what he wanted, when he wanted to do it with pretty much no intervention from across the water. If the eight year gap between 'The House of Mirth' and 'Of Time and the City', was so Davies could sit around on his arse watching television, he's one hell of an actor.
