  • BenWilson,

Heh, nice Daleaway. I feel the encroachment of all you say lapping at my feet like a rising tide.

  • Bob Munro,

Yes, they should have drilled down a bit further.

    *boom boom*

Exactly. How could they top that?

And you have to be quick.

  • Juha Saarinen,

Oh, and can someone write me a script to replace all instances of "your mum" with "a mainstream consumer"?

What did you just call my dear mum? Step outside, now!

  • linger,

Anybody else notice that fully 1/4 of the XKCD comic archive consists of "your mother" references somewhat more disturbing than the ones that have exercised discussion here?

  • BenWilson,

linger, that's OK though, because it's a cartoon strip. Every noticed that Homer Simpson is a complete bastard in pretty much every way? But he makes us laugh at him.

  • Jackie Clark,

Dale, you are an absolute star. So well put. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why older women should rule the world, if they could be arsed.

More than that, he makes us sympathise with him.

My kids understand him perfectly as an archetype.

On reflection I remembered others, but this was the one popped in my head*

Yeah? Well your MOM turns every conversation into a "your mom" joke and it's unbearable.

    * like your m... Never mind.

I always felt a defining moment in my maturation was the transition from identifying with Bart to identifying with Homer.

Heh, I'm worried about when I identify with Homer's Dad.

  • Shep Cheyenne,

SJ - I always felt a defining moment in my maturation was the transition from identifying with Bart to identifying with Homer.

I was indentifying with Barney for a while there.

That's the real worry. I'll never remember the time when I went to somewhere or other and did something. Apparently it was good, or bad but then I think. Where is my dinner, and realise I have to cook it myself.

  • kevin_montpellier,

The newly provided upload and download rates for Orcon are the standard in France, which, when working well, allows us 3-4 computers running decent broadband (wirelessly) from the same line. So that's a good thing.

I guess the shock is the price. Here, for NZD$57, you get unlimited upload/download, 100 TV channels (that you can beam to your computer via wifi, or play a film in the lounge on the TV beamed from a computer in a bedroom, via wifi), no "telecom" line charge and unlimited free phone calls to 70 countries (including NZ).

Possible reasons: highly concentrated population in cities, economies of scale, terrible and expensive customer service! When it works, welcome to heaven. When it doesn't, welcome to hell!

  • samuel walker,

as I switched the radio from Hauraki to radio B, used to be on 91.8 in those days and the studio number was 307 3918 to go with the frequency which was the trend at the time,..............................Oh yes and I believe our Russ was on the wireless at the time. Ain't that cool?

cue memory spike to when the number was 373 918 and Marcus Lush was ruling talkback, pre breakfast.

  • Rich of Observationz,

I'd have to send her the secret phrasebook first. You're not "turning it off then on" -- you're power-cycling the equipment

You're revealing trade secrets here. From the Linux level one support manual:

    - Ok, can you type:
    netstat -a
and read me what you see.
    - Hmm, interesting.
    - Try:
    ps -ef | grep 'httpd'
    and what do you get.
    - Ok: can you type su and enter the root password please?
    - now vi /etc/foobar_150308
    - now press i then type foobar<tab>19001
    - now press <esc> then _:wq_
    - now try ps -ef | grep 'httpd'
    - what do you get?
    - hmmm, try reboot
    - call me back when it's started?

  • Rich of Observationz,

If you could use the internet on a party line, and one person downloaded something, would everyone get it?

I think you'd need a very special modem, usually only available to GCSB and the like.
