  • Jackie Clark, in reply to recordari,

Yes I had heard of them - my time era after all and I was in England at the time, but they never appealed to me, I have to say.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Kids liking the same music as their parents. That's just..... wrong, no

It is possible...and, indeed, a source of shared pleasure, as with books, films, TV programmes. Catherine Rose (17) and I both like Death Cab for Cutie, Arcade Fire, Tom Lehrer (and more) but disagree on Bright Eyes and Mindless Self Indulgence. Introduce your children to your music, just as you would introduce them to books (but keep your house a ACDC-free zone!)

    Another YMMV moment. Fair enough.

    ETA:

Introduce your children to your music

The best success we've had is the Juno soundtrack. Kimya Dawson is great for car trip singalongs, and the joy that a family of five can get from the singing in unison of the lines; 'Fuck Bush and fuck this war' is almost limitless.

Oh, Gawd! I am distracting myself whilst I mark student essays and I just read the following sentence (sic) Most of France movies are speaks French. Admittedly from an ESL student but bloody hell!

  • Jackie Clark, in reply to recordari,

Is that a bit weird? I was into dancing in the 80's, and EBTG always seemed to be more cerebral than I required. Sorry - I know I've probably broken something in you!

My best ever was 'Do not beat your bowel with your chopsticks'. It's etiquette Jim, but not as we know it.

Sorry - I know I've probably broken something in you!

Nah, it's all good. Discovering you're not a big wet blanket for angst-y 80s music like me might act in your favour.

  • Paul Williams, in reply to Sacha,

    from Everything But the Girl?

Yup. In the post EBTG era, he's a pretty successful DJ and producer. He's put out, at least, four Buzzin Fly CDs which IMO are fantastic. He's toured Sydney a couple of times too (saw him about four years ago). More on his youtube channel too

Ah! I was a big fan of the Lazy Dog album, didn't know he was doing this, so thanks.

Brilliant album. On the 'seeing them around' thing, a good friend of mine (in Sydney) was part of the medical team (in the UK) that effectively saved him from an auto-immune disorder. She speaks very highly of him. His book about the experience, Patient, is a damn good read.

Recodari - agreed on the compulsion.

Mate, what is YMMV? I've been meaning to ask for a while and the nearest acronym I could reverse-engineer was "You Make Me Vomit" and that doesn't fit in most cases where I've seen it.

    Just for that Geoff

I still don't own an ACDC record but there ain't a better rock guitar sound so gratuitously pushed up in the mix as this one.

Sorry, back to Everything but the girl now.

The Fact Mag mix this week is pretty fine too.

In fact, the Fact Mag mixes are a constant source of fineness.

I can't help feeling a bit like the school boy nerd who one day gets to be in the 'in the know crowd' and forgets where he came from. It took me months to work out ETA. And I even goggled it.

ETA. FFS, back to the music.

  • Sacha, in reply to Peter Darlington,

What is depressing is that most of his friends seem to like '80s power ballads (Bon Jovi, Poison etc...) and ACDC. WTF is up with that?

Shudder. Caught a few minutes of Mannequin on telly the other night and it reinforced again how utterly crap most commercial 80s music was. I'm sure there are some who find the genre just wonderful. So long as they keep it well away from me..

I know. We live in the rural South Island so shouldn't be too surprised. Bit sad though. Most of his friends find his (and my) music very weird. The again, not many of their dads would be banging out RZA or Madlib on a Sunday afternoon.

…and for your peace of mind, you should keep it that way. This ain’t singing; it is very loud gargling!

Jeez–we have the dubious delights of ZZ Top and Good Charlotte playing here this weekend.

I am out of here, bundle of student essays under my arm, to escape the bloody V8s (Waikato’s contribution to the peak oil crisis?) and the roving packs of nongs in silly caps.

All you folk have a great weekend.

You're Nelson way, though, aren't you? Expect the local musical soup to be a bit different than Southland, say.
