  • nothingelseon,

Thanks also for the heads up on The Get Down - real keen to see this, and to listen to the Park Jam Nu Sounds! Thanks so much.

  • bob daktari,

Quietly excited about King Loser and Sleepers Union at the Others Way - some older types to compliment the creative array of younger ones

This just released video by Sleepers Union is lit or a banger as the kids would say - me I just think its awesomely big

I think Lil Chief Records is one of the great record labels from NZ, go them!

  • Tim Michie,

I'm slightly nervous for The Get Down with Luhrmann involved but it probably wouldn't have been greenlit without him. For those

    mildly obsessed with this era

I'll link again to Ed Piskor's Hip Hop Family Tree.

And Yay! for new Lil Chief releases. Love me some Tokey Tones.

Looks a bit like 1520 Sedgwick Ave in the cover image for that mix, the home of Kool Herc at the time this stuff kicked off if I recall right. When I was in NYC 4 years ago I did a slightly gimmicky tour which went past there, hosted by Mr Kurtis Blow. And excuse my pedanticism Russell, but doubles were more for extending the breakbeat than the mix & as recent as 10 years ago the only option for DJ’s coming downunder was to bring at least two flight cases rammed with wax. If you’ve ever tried to extend the breakbeat on something like scoprio or apache or I get lifted, its much harder in practice than you might expect!

On the history tip, Dan Charnas’ book might be of interest.

Kurtis in the Bronx ... somewhat predictably he launched in 'These are the breaks' while we were cruising back to mid-Manhattan, in a mini bus

I read part of it and really liked it, but the West Coast stuff lost me – I'm not really so invested in that music.

Well you're ahead of me! I haven't finished the Charnas book, nor have I started Bill's "Last night" ... "Can't stop" is another one in the ballpark

  • Russell Brown,

Just to note that I've updated the post with live links to buy both the Reduction Agents vinyl and the tribute album (which is great!) – I'm not sure whether they were always set for release today or Gareth Shute saw the post and thought, hey, why not :-)

Speaking of The Saints I just happen to be releasing a rare Laughing Clowns (Ed Kuepper) LP back into the wild
    http://www.trademe.co.nz/music-instruments/vinyl/lps-33-rpm/other/auction-1141132334.htm

Not to mention two great NZ compilations – both great snapshots of their times.

How was the air up there – a brilliant K-Tel compilation (!) of NZ ‘60s hits – our ’Nuggets’ perhaps

and Pagan’s fine Kiwi compilation – Positive Vibrations from 1989

    But wait there’’s more!
Back in the ’80s Chchch’s Music World did some fine releases of odd overseas genres – they had a brilliant german super rock album and this gem Pillows and Prayers a compilation of Cherry Red Records releases for 1982 and 1983 – pay no more than $2.99 -indeed!

For those interested in late 70s New York, this is great if you haven’t seen it already

New York City, 1977 – It was a time when the city had fallen into decay, with too few jobs, money, police, schools, and social services. There was a city wide blackout with major looting, a serial killer on the loose, and the Bronx was burning. And yet out of the chaos emerged one of the most creative times any city has ever encountered.

And this about gangs in late 70s NYC:

I was looking for posters by Chris Grosz from the Velvet Glove (a ’70s venue) – if anyone out there has any…

this site of older stuff was interesting too…

Got that collection last year. It's like a playlist from Radio Active 1982 (this is a *good* thing, by the way).

Interesting mention of the K-Tel comp (never heard of it), as some of the Australian budget labels had similar curio's - the album above is supposedly a Sun Ra type tribute, but its a bit more new agey than jazz .. on budget label Tele-mak. I saw a copy for sale in Osaka last year for ~ $200!

  • Mike O'Connell, in reply to Hebe,

I gather they formed at CPIT/Ara Jazz School. What a transition!

Tonight, for anyone at a loose end, T54 who are about to embark on a short tour play at Space Academy (across road from Darkroom) tonight - support by Best Bets. The snappy tour poster I'm reliably informed was done by Luke Wood (who’s also in Hex Waves).

Seeing Ian's references to band posters from 1980s Chch has reminded me that I got a copy of the just-released publication of Un_stuck : Band Posters From Christchurch City Library Archives (1980-1989), an excellent little booklet with production overseen by Luke, and assembled by some of his fine arts and second year students at Ilam. All are annotated with the story behind the poster and / or the event itself.

    Quoting:

Imaginative new forms of music have often come hand-in-hand with equally inventive visual responses - correlatives in the form of album covers, music videos , and posters

Too right. Luke also notes the attitude of the time was that making band posters wasn't 'real graphic design'! Also comes with contextual essays and interviews with Ilam connections back in the day; a superb addition to the history of Antipodean Gothic Christchurch.
