  • Caleb D'Anvers, in reply to Sacha,

She has probably influenced more people already than you or I ever will. That deserves respect, not sneering.

You know who also influenced more people than any of us here ever will? That's right: HITLER.

  • Sacha,

Haven't established whether one of Australia's biggest annual music festivals sells fried chicken sorry, but apparently they know talent when they see it.

New Zealand teenager Lorde has been handed the break of her life after promoters of Splendour in the Grass asked her to step in to replace Frank Ocean, who pulled out of the festival at the last minute.

  • "chris", in reply to Caleb D'Anvers,

Thanks for the True Widow link Caleb, tasty stuff. wrt to the above I'd possibly have just gone with The Wiggles. Not being privy to the kind of numbers Sacha will bring to this Sacha/"chris" power couple, it's hard to know but I'm guessing at this juncture we'd be hard pressed to top the influence of Ken Ring, personally I could provide....realistically, no one. It's on your shoulders Sacha.

I stumbled on this headline in the interim: Lorde: 'I have a single digit in my bank account'. Ideal if you want a career in being asked if you're getting paid yet.

While her card is declined at Subway, and she’s used to sell us chicken. Sure I sneer at that system, at her handlers, at that marketing team. I sneer as I eat the chicken she is being exploited to sell me. My respect for that is absolutely zero.

You need to get over this.

Firstly, what is this chicken she's being "exploited" to sell you? I'm not aware she's done any ad campaigns.

Secondly, the interesting thing about her marketing so far is that there virtually hasn't been any. All Universal has done is say "no" to things like radio station appearances. I think it's been handled wisely and well to this point.

I thought we put that discussion to bed on Friday.

  • "chris", in reply to Russell Brown,

Sorry I was busy with work Russell, but since you asked, I can answer the first question. Youku appears to have a contract with Yummy! so that's the Fried Chicken reference. The video has a number of hosts, with views from the teens up to the very low thousands, except for the posting by Houmu where it has 70,000 views. Houmu is the front for a music journalist in Shandong, has requests to conduct business in the comments, and has uploaded 16,000 (almost entirely foreign?) music videos since 2008, and a viewership of about 6,000,000. My understanding of it is that Houmu is used as a middle man to break foreign music in China. Universal Music Group also has a Youku channel, have not hosted Lordes video, and clearly haven't issued a take down notice to Houmu. It's a reciprocal business relationship. but that's where the chicken is being sold and also the music hopefully, the exploitation is simply that she's still not getting paid.

Really not sure how you can say that without access to the details of her contracts, Universal's business relationships and the various deals she's no doubt party to now.

Income from anything like this takes up to two years to flow through, sometimes longer. There's also hefty investment from all sorts of third parties to get anyone to this point. The idea that video play should equal a dollop of cash in her bank account in short order is just not real world.

That UMG have a Youku channel almost certainly means that they have access to a portion of that advertising income from that video upload. That will then be split with her once costs are covered, and within the normal accounting cycles.

  • "chris", in reply to Simon Grigg,

Thank you for clarifying all those processes Simon, I appreciate your time as an industry insider, I was under the impression that these practices are generally pretty standard in the pop music business. As I mentioned UMG have not uploaded the video themselves but passed it to Houmu for promotion, Houmu being better positioned for this role, as evidenced by the 71,031 views for the Tennis Court, and various rumblings about take-downs of identical videos from other users. All unsubstantiated from this corner, I might add.

As for my knowledge of the ins and outs of the business arrangement, most certainly I’m not qualified to comment. What hooked me into this discussion on this website wasn’t so much the music or business side of it as much as Ella repeatedly pleading poverty in interviews and the periphery to that.

If she is struggling, I suspect that's about to end shortly. I'd be very surprised if Ella wasn't the recipient of a hefty publishing advance in the near future (several zeros). Plus, she's likely on per diems and a weekly sub from Universal at the moment.

Sacha I really don’t have the time. You called me out the day I had my rant and I stopped as suggested. You kept referencing the chicken, it’s not that big a deal. We’ve covered her not being able to afford a cab or Subway,1 digit in the bank account. obviously not my ideal reading material, and not to be entirely dismissive, I’ll leave you one more:

we drink terrible vodka which tastes like dust because it’s cheap. All my clothes are from charity shops and I get public transport,

    Peace brother. I love you.
