  • bob daktari,

Been digging the Yumi Zouma... beautifully chilled. There's a ace remix on their labels soundcloud - plus some tasty downloads from other acts too

I'd quite like one of the bright young things (or old timers) dabbling in electronic stuff to make something sampling cicadas

I do not understand why this didn't happen years ago.

  • Dastardly Bounder, in reply to Russell Brown,

It's actually pretty hard to get a good clean recoding of cicada, without it sounding white noise. However I'm willing to give it another crack! Anyone with a good cicada sample please let me know...

  • Alan Perrott,

felt lucky at lunchtime and managed a couple of longtime wants.

been after a cheap version of this for yonks and snared a lovely US pressing. I am (a funky) Woman...

and this erm, barking mad b-side. never thought I'd find it here and some would say I'd be better off if I hadn't...

then, for shits and giggles, this rather took my fancy. they don't make 'em like before they even used to...

and good to see Jay Clarkson is still playing out, always dug her stuff at the Windsor - and the drummer's spangly blue kit, his name eludes me for the moment.

My preferred version of Townes Van Zandt's 'Dollar Bill Blues'.....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zBjdR91rHzs

And, what the hell, seeing it's you, I'll throw in Donald Byrd's decidedly beautiful 'Cristo Redentor' (1963).....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2KvM2T40RQ

Not to mention Ry Cooder's pearls of wisdom (preach it to me brother !!! preach it to me !!!).....http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DHdjBd105IU

  • Geoff Lealand,

Charles Bradley was great, in a sold-out concert at the James Cabaret in Wellington last night (the venue is a well-kept secret!). All the right tropes of great soul music and another demonstration that you don't have to be conventionally beautiful to be sexy and sensual.

    Very much +1.

Those guys were doing complex bedroom productions before the equipment really even existed. They were layering cassette recordings!

Steve was always quite stern about how everyone should look after their cassette tapes properly.

  • JacksonP,

Last week Tiny Ruins released the studio version of Me at the museum, You at the Wintergardens along with announcing the release dates of her album Brightly Painted One (2 May). Details and track here.

Interesting also that they have signed to indie UK label Bella Union, which I have to admit I hadn’t really noticed before, although I’m familiar with a number of the artists.

All this is a lead in to what was for me a big discovery. Bella Union is the brainchild of former Cocteau Twins maestro Simon Raymonde, and by searching through the label artists, I found Snowbird, which is Simon himself and the amazing vocalist Stephanie Dosen. Their new album Moon contains some of the nicest 4AD sounding music since… I can’t even remember.

Two singles have been released so far.
    Porcelain

    All Wishes are Ghosts

The white vinyl album, along with a black vinyl remix, is at Real Groovy now, and I can recommend finding a quiet place with a real good speaker setup to drift away into the spaces.

    Long post is long. :-)

Incidently, Russell, LOVE the Sora Shima, only mildly taken with the Yumi Zouma and absolutely LOATHED the Helen Reddy, Alan Perrott. What's got into you, man ???????

  • Mr Mark,

Public outrage following the release of the truly horrendous Delta Dawn in 1973, saw a team of security guards charged with the task of keeping the woman the hell away from any unlocked Australian recording studio for the rest of the 1970s. Unfortunately, they got drunk one night, Helen slipped in the back entrance, defused the alarm system and your Youtube offerings, Alan, were the result.

And now back to Sora Shima's 'Glass Coffins" - at the opposite extreme of contemporary music's evolutionary spectrum from poor old Helen. There's a good argument to be made, incidently, that the nadir of popular music tends most often to occur in Australia. Exhibit One: The Reddster, Exhibit Two: Air Supply. Need I say more ?

right, you're on. I shall not rest, slumber, blink, utter a spoken pause or consider the lillies till I find an Air Supply badger-baiting scorchio.

make yourself comfy but, I may be some time...
