  • Craig Ranapia,

(OTOH, I'll go with the WaPo Fact Checker's call that the real problem with Obama's statement is that it perpetuates the myth that America liberated Auschwitz and generally won the war all round.)

Sure, but on the other other hand, it sure took a hell of a long time to see a little reality poured on the ANZAC myth.

  • Joe Wylie,

Back in '72 Mudoch's Australian papers pushed hard for a Whitlam victory, while Fairfax and Packer (Frank, Kerry's dad) were plugging for the Liberals. He's a pragmatic old bastard when it suits.

And of course, when The Sun suddenly fell in love with Tony Blair, you knew the tide had turned on the Tories.

Although perhaps that's not a very happy example ...

  • Tom Semmens,

Oh no! Not Rachael Raye! I had a (very) mild infatuation on her relentless enthusiasm and happily not size zero figure for a while there... She is about as Apple Pie self-made infomercial girl next door middle America as they come. If she sends coded messages of her support for the war on freedom, what hope have we got?

  • Neil Morrison,

Murdoch has been supporting the Obama campaign - Obama always did remind me of Tony Blair (in a good way).

But his New York Post had been planting anti-Hillary lies. I'm sure Obama could do with out that sort of support.

If you've never seen the British panel show "QI" (Quite Interesting) you're missing out on a treat. Its the TV equivalent of "My Word" and "My Music" - i.e. clever people being brilliant. A quick YouTube search will turn up dozens of episodes.

Here's a quick taster - host Stephen Fry fluffs his lines and the panel pounces relentlessly...

  • JP Hansen,

Yeah, Making Tracks was excellent. Waaay better than the promos made out.

Anyway, I mentioned this yesterday, but now I can embed it. Something in here for everyone who's ever been to YouTube. It's only missing Rick Astley.

  • Michael Stevens,

Seems as though Sharon has only apologised after losing a sponsorhsip deal with Dior (I think) in China.

And if you're going to use a term like karma that comes from an entirely different set of cultural and relgious understandings, you'd think you might bother to find out how it works.

If you believe in it, then in your current incarnation you are only working out the effects of the karma of previous existences, nothing you do in this life affects your present karma - you get to pay that off next time round.

The sloppy misuse of the term in the west is just lazy and insulting cultural appropriation

  • Steve Withers,

One of my favourites on YouTube is (somewhat profane and irreverent) Melbourne Comedian: Sean Bedlam.

He's currently featured on YT in response to the Rachael Ray farce. Rupert Murdoch even gets a mention!

[Code removed, see below for video –Ed.]

Also worthy of note was this blog post including a photo of John McCain's daughter also dressed like a terrorist.

  • Tim Michie,

The observation I most liked in the Scott McClellan 'Bush Whitehouse Mouthpiece was a Mouthpiece Shock' was Dana Milbank's accumulation of the favourite word to react to such outings in The Puzzled Presidency.

Hoodies: Practical cool for our ozone-holed times.

  • Hiro Protagonist,

How about a little reality check.

Auschwitz is in Poland [liberated by the USSR], not far from Kracow.

Buchenwald is smack in the middle of Germany, only "walking distance" to Auschwitz if you're very dedicated.

Perchance you were thinking of Birkenau, which *is* very close to Auschwitz, but still wasn't liberated by the US.

  • Andrew C,

You are correct Hiro, its about as walking distance as auckland is to wellington.

I think it was simply Obama using the generic or catch all term Auschwitz rather than being deceitful, fewer and fewer people are taking an active role in knowing world war history now and I imagine he is one of these people
