Hard News: ASA: Let's not talk about this

  • Joe Boden,

Total bullshit response from ASA. What's the point of having an authority if they behave like this?

  • David Chaloner,

Troubling attitude and leads to the possibility that impartiality is absent in the deliberation (such as it was).

I think we have seen the limits of industry-centric regulators more than enough times now.

I'd like these important functions to become part of an officer of Parliament alongside the Privacy Commissioner - say, a Communications Commissioner who could also take over OIA matters from the Ombudsman.

  • Craig Young,

I think the problem here is libertarian orthodoxy in advertising regulation. It's also inconsistent. New Right apologists are often fond of raging against smoking advertisement bans as an infringement on free and commercial speech, because nicotine is a legal substance and its consequences are long-term harm. When it comes to recreational cannabis, however, the question of intoxication and impaired workplace function arises, so conservative libertarians (like ACT's David Seymour and many National MPs) will not extend their selective concept of 'individual liberty' to the consumption of regulated recreational cannabis.

Workplace impairment is a feature of alcohol, so that can't be the distinguishing feature.

  • Alfie,

Back when media took their role more seriously, or at least some were less blatantly partisan, ASA decisions seemed more sensible. As the whole post-truth world changed the media landscape the level and speed of misinformation has drastically increased. The ASA has failed to adapt.

By ducking for cover with this complaint, especially coming just before an important referendum, Raewyn Anderson has opted for the 'Let's not get involved' route when she could so easily have demonstrated the leadership which befits her role. Because it's surely time for all sectors of our society to take a stand on lies and misinformation.

    ASA... please do better.

  • Mark Champion,

I wonder if all this is a deliberate attempt by authority to keep status quo.
I have written to Internal Affairs about the charity Family First and potential donations coming from overseas but they fobbed me off like the ASA is to you.
We're playing against a stacked deck, its bloody frustrating.
