  • giovanni tiso,

The media are slightly less circumstances - and on the Herald's home page for instance you'll see a longer list.

  • Emma Hart,

Here is my audio for those who missed it. Thanks to Sacha for managing to find it for me.

  • Islander,

Getting back to no4mality good people~McGonagall was a really good dramatic TRYER. He did his awful best to provide information for his society & for his family, and he worked very hard.
I have deep respect for William.
I have no respect for media-clown Gary Mc Cormack.

  • Jackie Clark, in reply to Emma Hart,

I just wanted to say Emma that I thought you spoke most eloquently. I hadn't realised that the kids' school was in town - that's a big bummer. (Maybe not for Rihanna but.) The bit that really got me was when you talked about the words bottling up. For some reason, I found that incredibly poignant. The loss of power, of course, means that certain lines of communication are interrupted. But I hadn't thought of it as cutting off your means of expressing your self, getting those words out. Thank you.

To be fair, there's rather a lot of off-schedule material and I don't think it's unreasonable that someone gets a weekend off. :)

RNZ's system is pretty much automated. Having said which, I have no idea how an item from about 1pm gets filed under a 5pm show's listing. Still, found it in the end.

  • Ross Mason,

Re the CTV building being on rubber isolators. I have had it confirmed today that it was not base isolated. In fact it appears the only building in Chch that has the base isolators is the new wing on the Womens Hospital.

I would be interested if anyone knows where that information Ann Malcom (sorry, not Malcolmson) got it from.

  • Sacha,

Rod Oram casts an economist's eye on the opportunity for proper city-building that this disaster presents.

We must think of earthquake proofing as an investment, not a cost. The same applies to inspiration. Widespread destruction in central Christchurch gives its people a remarkable opportunity to conceive and build a city that is even more beautiful, liveable and sustainable.

Yet, judging by New Zealand history – Napier excluded – we'll race to build a cheap, rather shoddy centre that's barely fit for the short-term. We'll tell ourselves we can't afford to do better.

But we've got to invest for the future. Given the world's rapidly rising human population, burgeoning cities, stresses of climate change and ever-scarcer resources, energy and water, the whole nature, form and technology of cities is changing in revolutionary ways. If we fail to adapt our cities and towns, we will drastically weaken the quality of our lives, and our competitiveness in the global economy.

    ...

Christchurch will remain its very attractive self, in character and defining factors such as its historic street grid. But it will find new expressions of those, which will be uniquely right for it, and appropriate for the new global reality. In doing so, Christchurch will become truly sustainable. It will make resilient its presence on the Canterbury plain, it will greatly enhance its economy, and it will lift the spirit of its people. This is not the task of the city. It is the task of the nation.

I was heartened to see Clare Curran use that link.

Still thinking about what it means.

  • Craig Ranapia,

I’ve avoided even looking at the vile twatcockery being said about dealing to looters, and really didn’t need to see the Minister of Police and Corrections get in on the act but WHAT THE FRAK, DANYL!:

It’s natural for private citizens to feel this way and this is the kind of grim humour you’d expect to hear from, say, a talkback radio-host. But Collins is the Minister of Police and Corrections and – in theory – she represents the state’s monopoly on punishment and violence. She really shouldn’t encourage individual citizens to rape each other.

Seriously, dude, Moby Dick of fail whale there. It’s not acceptable for Collins -- or anyone else -- to say shit like that under any circumstances because NOBODY EVER "DESERVES" TO BE RAPED. Rape culture is no more "natural" than casual racism or sexism. .

  • Shayne Stuchbery, in reply to giovanni tiso,

I thought that what Emma expressed quite beautifully was a very valid point, actually. It’s about all of us. It’s about the bereaved, the people in Christchurch who didn’t lose their home or any of the loved ones, the people in the rest of the country or overseas who felt a connection to Canterbury and the wider New Zealand community. I thought that it was also the point of Emily Perkins’ lovely piece for the Guardian, that she could quite legitimately write as a non-witness, a non-Cantabrian.

It’s about all of us. Just like it is a duty of all of us to participate how we can in the relief and the reconstruction.

Agreed. Well said GT. I am rather a long away, and to be quite honest, I have been known to be a bit of a Christchurch knocker: 'seedy old Christchurch', 'too english' and similar.
I was at Lincoln for a year (a failure - got a very nice wife out of it though) and developed a bit of a grudging affection for the place, as much as a Ngapuhi from Up North can. But the moment the September shake came through I found myself shocked, afraid, transfixed, and highly motivated to help in some way. So very much more this time around.

I found out very quickly that I care deeply about every part of my beloved homeland, and the people of that land. All of them.

Fundraiser event planning is underway in my little town - the concern from colleagues, friends, and every day folks here in Canada is touching - and they are proving pretty keen to reach into their pockets.

If you don't get how it's infinitely worse for the Minister of Corrections to say something like that, and phrase it so casually, I guess that's that.

I was pretty incensed by Nigel Lundy's suggestion that "[Some renters] are treating the earthquake like an excuse to avoid their responsibilities."

that’s not what Danyl is saying. he’s saying that lot’s of people think that prison rape is part of the punishment.

and he’s right. there are plenty of haters out there.

as for Collins, for her NOT to think like that would be the knock me down with a feather moment.

*very deep breath taken* Don’t go there. Please.

Well, if that’s what Danyl meant to say that’s what he should have wrote.

yup... like that's ever going to happen.

The Minister actually is what her years in opposition promised her becoming.

  • Ross Mason,

Good Chch Emergency Reponse news. Had a reason to utilise the Chch ambulance system last night. New Brighton Auntie was on phone to my Mum and suddenly said she had to put her head between her legs as she didn't feel too good. A small groan and the phone went dead. Mum called me and I then called 111 and let them know what had happened. Frantic finding of cuzzy's contacts and found one of her daughters who shot round. I was told to not try ringing as they would. They tried phoning her and eventually she answered(!!) Seems she fainted and some time later came round. Answered the phone, crawled to the front door and unlocked it and made it to her bed. Daughter and Paramedics turned up and gave her a good check up. Seems it was just one of those "turns".

But the system works even from Upper Hutt!!!! But Oh the Privacy Act!! I was not able to find out about her if I tried ringing them back. The only information I would be told was if she had been transferred and where she had gone. From Upper Hutt, extremely frustrating and useless information. But I can see why it is like this.

  • Che Tibby,

    a thought:

i'd suggest people write the Minister of Corrections asking for elaboration of her comments this morning.

for instance, is she intending to have prison rape added to the legislation, assuming that is what her comment intended?

Righto: by popular demand -- well, Sacha -- here's a new thread where the politics and economics can be hammered out without getting in the road of the telling of stories and sharing of feelings.
