  • Sofie Bribiesca, in reply to Bart Janssen,

It will be hard to stop visiting Hip Group cafes but there are a lot of other nice cafes in Auckland.

Of course there are Bart, heaps of them. Make a stand if you want to. It's a good point to make to all employers if nothing else.
The intention of Amanda Bailey being photographed with her employers was to show her support for them. Throughout this ordeal she has showed decorum and sensitivity for their situation they have found themselves in. Unfortunately for Amanda she is now being revictimised and whether her employers meant that or not, it has put her at the centre of what Glucina relishes and her job will now be in jeopardy. So the bullies are feeling good about that, I bet. It would however be excellent if her employer came out in support of this brave woman, somehow I doubt it. Intimidation has many tentacles.

This is a pattern of behaviour that feels like "predator" to me.

    http://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/news/national/shayne-currie-responds-to-pony-tail-gate/

In a statement, Shayne Currie has rejected the woman's claims Rachel Glucina tricked her into giving the interview by posing as a public relations professional.

However he appears to concede there was some confusion about her role in the situation.

"When I spoke to the owners, they told me they had initially thought Rachel was working on a statement to go to all media, along with the photograph,” he says.

"Given the situation, I wanted to ensure they were satisfied with the quotes they had given Rachel and took the rare step of agreeing she should run the quotes past the parties before publication. No objections were raised."

Ms Glucina has links to Hip Group's owners through her brother Henry, who works within the organisation.

When the power imbalance is so marked, it's well beyond the fetish stakes and heading for Saville territory.

“When I spoke to the owners, they told me they had initially thought Rachel was working on a statement to go to all media, along with the photograph,” he says.

“Given the situation, I wanted to ensure they were satisfied with the quotes they had given Rachel and took the rare step of agreeing she should run the quotes past the parties before publication. No objections were raised.”

So it WAS a deception – or at the very kindest reading, a mis-understanding. PR ‘goes out to all media’ – a journalist’s copy most certainly doesn’t.
And Mr Curry fails to mention that objections WERE raised, by the most important of the ‘parties’. "I wanted to ensure they were satisfied" indicates to me Curry was only considering the owners ('they' in the previous par), and probably only consulted them.

It is quite common with young children with autism. Some of those who are very tactile just love patting and stroking hair - to the point of obsession. But even autistic kids can be taught that it is not appropriate behaviour.

It's hard to comment on what Currie and the Herald are saying, because by the time I've posted this they'll probably be saying something else.

Here's the Stuff report (with a touch of Schadenfreude?):

The Herald issued three versions of its statement on the issue.

The first said Glucina had approached the Hip Group - which owns Rosie cafe - "to seek comment from them and the waitress for a NZ Herald article".

The second version removed reference to an article for the NZ Herald, and said Glucina approached the Hip Group after The Daily Blog broke the story.

A third version added Glucina "wanted to follow-up The Daily Blog post" when she urged the couple to front-foot the issue.

Translation: Glucina moved fast, and not on behalf of the readers but her friends. Retrospective cloaking (PR as journalism) then followed.

  • Bruce Ward,

Just to add to this, on the front page of today's Nelson paper and under the headline "Key's hair-pulling not OK, says waitress" there appears an article with a photo taken last year.
The photo caption reads "Prime Minister John Key plays with a young girl's hair as he talks to mothers at the opening of the Nelson Young Parents School at Auckland Point School last year". It certainly shows the man with his fingers in hair.
I cannot find the article or the photo in the on-line edition at Stuff!

    I found this instead..

If it was a one-off… you might just possibly accept he thought he was helping the girl get her ponytail off her shoulder “for the camera"… but as part of an ongoing pattern- we now know of at-least three females subject to similar – it seems REALLY creepy... especially the bit where it looks like he gives it a quick rub or fondle rather than just move it...

And now, after one person stands up for themselves... more come out of the woodwork...

    http://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11437343

Prime Minister John Key allegedly pulled the pony-tails of two school girls while on a visit to the national museum.

Mark Blackham of BlacklandPR said his 12-year-old daughter watched last night's television news and said, "that's what the Prime Minister did at Te Papa to my two friends".

  • Rob Stowell,

How have the Herald managed to make themselves look worse than the PM on #tailgate? Quite an achievement, for a company awash in PR specialists.
I reckon Currie needs to apologise and withdraw some of his statements, fast. Out on a limb; still sawing.

  • Rich of Observationz,

It's not unknown for senior politicians to develop psychopathic tendencies. There appears to have been a whole child molesting ring going on in the UK Tory party, and going further back, some think that Gladstone was Jack the Ripper.

I'm assuming/hoping (since it's Stuff) that that is the same one referred to earlier by Bruce Ward as being in an offline Nelson paper?

Also, different enough to not be noticed as creepy at the time.... but now fitting a pattern?

Last year, Key was invited to help shave then-Canterbury Earthquake Recovery boss Roger Sutton's head for charity. Key was given the important job of chopping off Sutton's ponytail - and took to it with relish. "Oh yeah, this is actually quite a lot of fun," said Key, with obvious delight. "Can I say how clean your hair is?"

This is a pattern of behaviour that feels like “predator” to me

"I don't think [the friend's] were perturbed, it was no big deal...it looks as if this is a thing he does, it's a way of interacting, it seems.
"I think it puts a bit more perspective on it...I don't know if it's affectionate or what it is, but it's clearly a thing he does."

Shill Blackham's passing this off as 'something Key does' is pretty darn flimsy - it needs an 'and thinks he can get away with' added to it.
Everyone used to say Morgan Fahey (disgraced former deputy mayor of Chch) was a top bloke too.

Apparently Key’s ponytail fetish is known as Trichophilia.
Whoever would have known that was a thing?

Anyone with a dictionary reading my post (#5466!! still) at 5.30pm yesterday
    :- )

My take is dirty Trichophilia may yet do what Dirty Politics couldn't...
