So what was he barking on about?

The Hawke's Bay District Health Board, I presume.

  • Jeremy Eade,

    Just got in.

Well , I’m a suburb bigot. I just love the instant label machine. ..but hey I got some time off from, ummm what do people do that stops them commenting on threads all day ( adopts best John Stewart Voice) ….Worrrrking.

Like the great Dave Chapelle said ,“I’m not a bigot but I do do statistics.”

Act were on their way out last election until they moved all their considerable forces from canvassing the national electoral vote to talking Richard Worths seat in Epsom, not Mangere .that is….Epsom. That happened overnight, no other party could have done that , they wouldn’t have had the money.

Changed votes with wads of cash , not policy. I was there, I drove straight through the billboard forest every morning. Vote for us because New Zealand doesn’t want us and we’ll have to go home. Why doesn’t New Zealand want them? Because their polices are frankly economically whacko.

Why did they go to Epsom and not Mangere? Because its rich, well richer than most electorates and people who have done well from our current economic set up would be more than likely live their, statistics bear this out.

Yet even given the considerable financial rewards many have gained under the current free business environment we have (World Bank ranking and all), members of this electorate changed their vote nearly overnight in electoral terms to make sure a party funded by millionaires would stay around in parliament long enough to “do fuck all”, lose weight and drop people on their heads .

So they blitzed a very well heeled community into letting them stay in parliament , a community who had been ready to support the National incumbent until the order was given.

I’m not being partonising to the people of Epsom, only the ones who voted act , the most useless party in the history of New Zealand politics. A party surviving on the chequebooks of people who have done incredibly well in their participation in the marketplace of New Zealand . A party who seem convinced that the only way for me to move forward is to loosen law, wield more undemocratic power on to private enterprise and hope they have a use for me in their grand vision, now that’s patronising.

I’m not saying it’s illegal. I’m just saying it’s politics we don’t need. Ya know lets get our Obama on or we’ll look out of touch with the rest of the world.

P.S ..Why do people wet themselves when someone uses the word ‘fuck”. It’s great word , so much better than piss. …and hey I didn’t start that , I just replied with likewise language to prove my point like Professor International Observer. ..you old racist.

And Christians, sometimes are really lovely people but , the son of god and the old “virgin birth” thing, come on you are a bunch of irrational space cadets.

Why can’t Jesus just be a well meaning guy with a beard.

I've lived in the Epsom electorate for the last two general elections. (Are there any other Epsomites here?) I live in the Mt Eden part of it where there aren't many (any?) pools.

I don't know what Rodney Hide has done for my locality. Once - once - I saw his comedy car down at the Mt Eden Village shops, but I've seen him more on the telly than in his electorate.

  • Jeremy Eade,

I wish I'd never said pools....but it would be nice to have one eh?
People of epsom who didn't vote act..thank you.

  • Craig Ranapia,

Jeremy: I know I'm going to regret asking, but WTF are you going on about? Richard Worth is a nice chap, and I'm bloody sorry he lost his seat but we live in a Parliamentary democracy where we elect our legislature. By means of a secret ballot.

Rodney Hide won Epsom fair and square, and his party drew just enough of the party vote to bring Heather Roy in on his coat-tails. If I can get those obstinate and immovable facts, Jeremy, then so can you.

William Tecumseh Sherman may well have been right when he snarled "Vox populi, vox humbug!' But I find that particular species of humbuggery a damn sight less offensive than people who treat their fellow citizens with contempt, for having the unspeakable temerity to exercise their franchise contrary to enlightened opinion.

  • InternationalObserver,

I just replied with likewise language to prove my point like Professor International Observer. ..you old racist.

__Like yourself Jeremy, I've been unable to get back into this thread until now....__

Wow - so you're calling me racist! Careful you don't compare me to Hitler or someone might call "Theatre!" Sorry comrade, but that's not a label that can be applied to me. I wonder if you misread my comment or chose to misread my comment

I don't think it's a big thing, and everyone can tell IO was making up an example to point out the other one. I just think there's ways to make your point without it. And given that the point was about not making stereotypes because they're not fair...

When Kyle said the above I felt he was still missing my point. I made the "Maori Party/beer and cigarettes" comment simply by cutting and pasting your original "ACT/pool cleaning" comment and making substitutions. I did so because if a "Maori Party/beer and cigarettes" comment had appeared on a right-wing blog (or anywhere for that matter) PAS readers would have been all over it. But when you made your "ACT/pool cleaning" comment Craig was the only one to call you on it.

I think it's silly to try to portray Epsom ACT voters the way you did, just as it would be silly to claim Labour supporters were all Chardonnay sipping Socialists, or Green party member were all ...

Well, here's 2 drafts that didn't make the cut when I made my original comment on Page 4:

Why are we still dealing with a Green party? Do the people of Coromandel still feel victimized so much they need their own party? Has the price of marijuanna gone up recently? Maybe we should have a telethon for them?

Why are we still dealing with a NZ First party? Do the people of Tauranga still feel victimized so much they need their own party? Has the price of retirement vilages gone up recently? Maybe we should have a telethon for them?

I think you'll agree they don't have the same impact as the comment I posted. BTW - I'm fascinated that some have felt my comments were racist or had racist undertones. Maybe RB does need to bit the bullet and introduce those emoticons to PAS. And maybe alongside those </just kiddin'!> </grrrr!> </sarcasm> and </wink!> emoticons he can have one unique to PAS: </someofmybestfriendsareMaori>

Seems I could use the latter ...

  • Kyle Matthews,

When Kyle said the above I felt he was still missing my point.

Yeah I get your point. And the reasons why it's 'ok' to poke at Epsom and swimming pools, but not Maori and beer/cigarettes - that's valid to explore.

I just don't like the model of 'let me prove how what you said was a cheap shot by putting up another one as example'. We can do better than that, in debate.

    Hi Craig,

I’ll explain when I get off work but I really wish you’d stop starting your posts in such a cuntish partonising way, habit of a lifetime I guess….and the quotes, ......I'm thinking of a word that starts with s , ends with b and has 'no" in the middle....and intellectual in the front.

But it’s good you asked, that’s what you should have done in the first place.

  • Jeremy Eade,

International observer ...got the joke, just played another one on ya by laughing at the idea you were a racist because of one post . Your post isn't racist it's just clumsy.

Epsom is a well to do electorate, a success story of the New Zealand economy. Yet they have a party representing them that is trying to convince us of their economic victimisation status.

But your post isn't racist. I got that and people who thought it was took it out of context. cheers.

  • Angus Robertson,

    Jeremy,

Ya know lets get our Obama on or we’ll look out of touch with the rest of the world.

Okey dokey. Obama has just made a speech disagreeing with those who blame all ills on white people who live in nice surburban neighbourhoods. That it is really a stupid preposturous idea, a form of race-baiting divisive politics he has no time for.

"Obama has just made a speech disagreeing with those who blame all ills on white people who live in nice surburban neighbourhoods."

That's why I like him. ....but it's not a particular big call , it's just a rational call and has nothing to do with my original post. I am white people god dammit!!!!!!trashy and all.

...and Epsom act voters might not all be white, who knows? The post was questioning what the act party actually brings to our political forum apart from crazy economics (which by the way are well catered for by the right wing of the national party) and bad dancing.

Thank you Epsom. I hope your lives haven't suffered too much at the hands of the uncaring socialists.

Anyway International Observer is the guy bringing race into it , although that doesn't make him a racist. I love white people.

Well, it is my habit to be a cunt with pricks, and take serious people seriously. Its a proportional response. But lets get off the bitter pills and give Rodney a little credit where credit's due -- he campaigned hard in Epsom, and I've heard that from acquaintances who were volunteering for Richard, so I don't think they'd be prone to being over-generous. IF ACT's general campaign was half as effective and focused they might well be in slightly better shape.

And I've been around the National Party long enough to say "if only" to the idea of good little Nat-bots who will do as they're told with the flick of a switch.

Bad dancing is catered for by all parts of parliament. Particularly Pete Hodgson and Trevor Mallard, I saw on TV last year. Permanently scarred.

    Re: Iraq.
Everyone has read Misery, right? That nice lady trying to get that poor author man back on his feet. Not a complete metaphor of course, as she didn't run him off the road in the first place.

    Re: Recent NZ pols history.
    Muldoon becomes Peters.
Lange becomes Locke (and Douglass becomes everyone else).
The dude no one remembers is forgotten.
    Bolger becomes English.
Shipley becomes, well, I wouldn't like to defame anyone.
    Clark becomes Clark.

    Threadjack!

Some decades ago I did a 6 month Intro to Religious STudies course at Vic. Can't remember why. Jim Veitch was the primary lecturer & I recall (possibly erroneously) that he told us that the Virgin Birth was a mistranslation.

He (or someone there) claimed that the word that was translated as "virgin" really meant "premenstrual".

If correct, that takes some of the supernatural gloss off the nativity story.

There' s a lot of historical and of course scientific evidence to make religion extinct tomorrow but that wont happen and as we speak some poor kid in a religous school a few streets away from your desk is having the powerful threat of hell poured into his ear. It's child abuse and it's depressing. I'm sure a few of us here have suffered similar brain washing.

  • Stephen Judd,

That would indeed be hilarious, but the mistranslation is the Hebrew "almah", young woman/girl, rendered as Greek "parthenoi", a virgin.

Eh? When did I bring race into it? By mentioning the Maori Party? Anyone can join the Maori party, you don't have to be Maori ... just as you don't have to be working to join the Labour Party ... or a thespian to join the Act party ... speaking of which -- I think we're back to Theatre.

Oh, shit. I am going to call theatre on myself, and kick my own arse.

I'm not going to apologise for the substance of my comment, Jeremy. But I am going to apologise to you and everyone else for responding to a crass provocation in kind.

  • Jeremy Eade,

Cunt is a word people use quite commonly in the workplace, at home at the bar and of course in schools. It has many meanings in common language .It’s meaning is similar to “negative individual “but it’s a lot stronger. Cuntish way means “negative way”

You can’t ban words, so you might as well celebrate them. Censorship is a poor concept that severely holds back our ability to evolve the language .language evolution literally extends the richness of our dialogue. We need evolution, we need better communication.

To me right wing parties who don’t seem to be in any shape to govern are crass not words, the right wing modern conservative movement is incredibly crass and disturbing and gives conservatism a bad name everywhere, but words are just fucking words.

thanks for the apology though.I certainly not out to piss you off but I do disagree with a lot of the things you say

And who would of 20 years ago thought we’d have to hold our tongues on human rights abuse for trade reasons but here we are, dealing with the absurdities of trying to keep your economy afloat in a sea of world economies who quite frankly couldn’t give a shit about our gdp. It's appalling and all I know is I didn't vote for it.

  • Shep Cheyenne,

Monteith's New Zealand Lager - The new Vanilla Coke of beers, drinkable and (hopefully) forgettable. A metalic after taste that was really, urrgh.

I should have thought twice when ending Lent with the new Monteith's Lager priced at $18.90 a doz compared to SteinLager Pure at $25 a doz.

At $18.90 it's overpriced and should try to compete with Flame Beer.

Wondering what was ment by International Beers in your commentary Russell - mayby the dreaded Snow Flake Beer only sold at the dodgyest of bars in the 90s?

DB have dropped some marketing clangers like banning CD raincoats at Lancaster Park - so kids got soaked then caught a cold and the CD branding wasn't visible on TV any way - so why make a fuss.
What ever the marketing decisions they're cocked up the beer has always been good, but not this time.

I'ld drink it if it's free, there is nothing else, and it was served at a temp just a above freezing on a hot day.

Last night we had a tasting, put it to the back of the fridge and drunk everything else first.
