  • Kyle Matthews,

I still don't really get what the difference is betwixt a deliberate punch & a deliberate knee. At the end of the day the sanction is supposed to discourage violent* behaviour - are they not both violent?

In ice hockey punches tend to be a complete waste of time, as everyone is wearing a helmet, and often gloves.

A knee, particularly to the other player's knee as they are skating past is likely to injure. People's careers have been ended by kneeing.

That being said, I would hope that if the Irish guy had thrown two punches at McCaw in the ruck, he would have got the same punishment. The position of the victim and their awareness has a bit to do with it.

Tracey Nelson's AB game stats are online.

    Pre-feminised for your convenience.

  • giovanni tiso,

She's a chick?! I always assumed Tracy to be short for "Spencer Tracy" or something. How can a woman be both into rugby *and* statistics?

Next you'll be telling me they play the bloody game too. Is there no end to our emasculation?

Incidentally, Tracy is a common boys name meaning 'warlike'. Just sayin'.

Actually, in a threadmerge sort of way, the first time I encountered the Vuvuzelas was at a Women's NPC (or whatever it's called now) Rugby match at Eden park. There were only a handful of us supporting North Harbour (long story), but we had the horns, and did we make a noise. I think the ref wanted to have us banned.

It's Tracey with an e, and she's a scientist -- an insect pathologist, to be precise.

She also knows more about rugby than almost anyone I've ever met. She appears on Sky's sports-journo show and provides live stats for the radio broadcasts from AMI Stadium. The arrival of "first three to the breakdown" as a rugby metric is entirely her work.

I do like the way she'll fly to Auckland for a rugby test and spend two hours before kick-off shopping for shoes in Newmarket.

I once sat in the media box at the Stadium filing my nails. Never have I felt like quite such a _girl_.
