  • Kyle Matthews,

The Al-Kharafi family, of Kuwait, are planning a bid to buy Liverpool for £500M (though admittedly this is £100M less than the asking price).

I've never been there, but I hear you could buy the whole city for that much money.

  • Kyle Matthews,

I was also quite happy that the coverage had less of this

    I'm not down with motorsports.

What does a Grid girl do? I mean, obviously look attractive in tight clothing, but what's the grid?

Does every team have a set of these, or does the host country provide a set for the whole event?

  • Rich of Observationz,

The technology exists for somebody in the UK to take the off-air broadcast of the FA Cup (or anything else) and stream it to the rest of the world.

This would be Illegal, Bad and Wrong. But it can happen, and probably will soon.

Unless what you report is the end of the bubble, Big Sport collapses soon, and we'll be watching an FA Cup Final between AFC Wimbledon and AFC Liverpool on Clapham Common. With all footage released under a Creative Commons license.

  • Hadyn Green,

The grid is the Starting Grid, (which is confusingly not always a grid because the cars can be staggered). The girls stand by the cars pre-start and hold umbrellas over the drivers and also hold signs saying who the team/country/driver is.

I'm not sure where it came from or how long it's been going on.

  • Rich of Observationz,

I'm sure they had Grid Girls in all those great old movies with sexy racing drivers in Monaco and places.

The umbrellas are to keep the sun or rain off the drivers in open cars. I'm not sure if they have Grid Girls in that hooned-up family saloon racing that passes for motorsport in Aussie - bit pointless as they're closed cars, really.

  • Yamis,

I don't think Tua has much choice but to get it on v Cameron. He's 36 and as he said in the Rattue interview, it's a launching pad to try to ressurect his career for one last comeback. He was also fairly open about whats gone and going on with his money.

I like both fighters so don't know who I want to win. It would be best I suppose if it was a massive fight and went the distance or near with neither fighter coming out of it looking bad. But if one of them scores an early knockdown you can put the lights on the losers career. Even though Cameron is several years younger he just won't be taken seriously overseas as he's struggling to get any interest over there now.

And I'll get in an early tip for the Cardinals (I always think I'm getting them confused with a baseball team -- St Louis) for the Superbowl.

  • Naly D,

See I think that Tua is the deserved favourite. Think about it. When have you seen Cameron not get cut in a fight? When have you seen him use his phenomenal speed and agility to evade punches? Once he gets hit by Tua's devastating right hook a couple of times he'll be like a stunned mullet standing in the middle of the ring.
Cameron isn't that good a boxer [he'd beat me to a pulp but still], but the reason he receives so much exposure is because of his TV3 sponsorship.

It's good to see that the A1GP might be getting a funding boost

    Hamilton V8 organisers take note.

The HV8's seemed to be a pretty good family affair last year. Don't go to the Gold Coast round unless you're between 25-52 and a male though. Especially don't go if you're a female.

What does a Grid girl do?

Basically what Hadyn said but the umbrella part is pretty important in the open wheel [the wuns wot look loike baby-F1 cars] because the engine is directly behind the driver which will generally be at between 60 degrees and 150.
I'm not sure why the V8's have them, because they don't shade the drivers at all, just themselves.

    Ka-Ching:

I wonder what will happen when the companies cannot reign in their motorsport spending any more... Let's see ball sports survive then! Muahaha.
Seriously though, Motorsport is open about its dependancy on corporates to survive. Many other sports, not so much. But hey, at least NZ is open to bringing back alcohol sponsorship, right?

  • Naly D,

Yamis, I'm gonna try and beat Hadyn here but that's because when NFL teams were first formed, they were named after the baseball team of their town. That's why the Brooklyn Dodgers played the Philidelphia Eagles in the first ever televised NFL match!

And Rich, we think alike re: V8 grid girls. Marry me?

  • Hadyn Green,

Although the (now) Arizona Cardinals originated in Chicago and are one of the oldest surviving franchises (along with the Bears and Giants).

The Cardinals moved to St Louis, when the Bears took hold in Chicago, and (I believe) the baseball team was named after them.

  • Naly D,

Yeah I was way wrong damnit.

"Coincidentally, St. Louis already had a baseball team called the "Cardinals". The established National League team eventually decided against pressing a formal objection to another sports team in the city using the same name. Sports fans and local news broadcasters called the team "The St. Louis Football Cardinals" or "The Big Red" to distinguish the two teams."

  • Yamis,

I thought Cameron had some major surgery to try to correct the cutting issue after that fight. But I suppose once a bleeder always a bleeder. It's hard to know what tactics Cameron will use to keep Tua at bay. As they say in boxing, a punchers power is the last thing to go so it's not like Tua won't be able to send Cameron down if he nails him. But then he couldn't nail Lewis in 12 rounds (although Lewis and Cameron aren't on the same planet size and ability wise).

This is how I get all my ice hockey - a bunch of wonderful volunteers in North America copy all the games and upload it for torrenting.

It makes me wonder if there's a bunch of people out there in the world desperately missing All Blacks games, and I should return the favour (if I had a HDD drive).

Heh. You might be on your own with that 15 GB up/down load.

Cameron vs Tua is surely a local fight being hyped above what it would be elsewhere, because it's a couple of local boys fighting at home.

Neither of them have a serious chance at a major title (I lose track of how many there are these days). Cameron might get a fight, but it'll be as one-sided as Tua vs Lewis, surely.

  • Amy Galvani,

Getting back to the grid girls, apparently the 2008 Australian Grand Prix had grid boys as well as girls - aka 'grid slot indicators'. They were trying to bring F1 to a biceps'n'pecks-appreciating audience.
