  • noizyboy,

Yeah, I saw Mark Todd after his dressage, and although it was 6:30am in the morning, he was absolutely dripping.

And speaking of getting hot wearing your sporting uniform, did anyone see the fencers' new boiler-suit/welding mask combo? What happended to elegant old white padded suit and mesh mask?

  • Tom Beard,

Why did they have to wear the full get-up in that heat? Where are the Nike light-weight sports top hats?

A top hat is the closest thing to "sportswear" that a gentleman will consider wearing.

  • Sue,

i was fed up with the cycling commentators

sure i only watch cycling during the games and the tour de france
but i'm used to the quality that is Phill Liggett and Paul Sherwen

as such i do know how to pronounce the names of bvoth the winner of the tour de France and the world time trial champion properly. Unlike our commentators

  • Michael Stevens,

I think they should all be made to compete in the nude, just as in the Classical Olympics - and i'd watch then ;-)

I'd feel compelled to miss the wrestling.

And my goodness, they'd have to be careful in the hurdles.

  • George Darroch,

I'm used to the quality that is Phill Liggett and Paul Sherwen

Liggett is a wonder - I never paid cycling much attention until coming under the spell of his hypnotic voice.

The swimming has been amazing. It was disappointing to watch NZ bail out in the 4x100 breast-stroke, but considering the world record was broken in that heat it was a strong performance. Records are dropping everywhere.

(and yes, the Speedo LZR suits may have something to do with it, but no, they're not expensive and most are wearing them or hastily copied clones. Records are falling even to those who don't wear them though...)

thanks all, I was going to do a "hello world" post tonight

    ... the pole vault...? (sorry)

There is a brief but drunken discussion this week in the Dropkicks podcast about skintight Olympic uniforms.

    As for the pole vault:

I tuned in for the opening ceremony at 9.30 on Friday night (I don't get out much), only to find it didn't kick off until after midnight. And up 'til then, programming would be largely montage-based. If I wanted montages, I'd watch ESPN. Or Rocky.

The *actual sport* we're being shown seems minimal, with all the sponsor's messages, ONE promos (but I'm already watching it! RIGHT NOW!), commentators' previews and studio douche-ery.

No-one has anything nice to say about One's coverage, do they? Nathan Rarere once said he loved the Olympics, cos it gave him a chance to use the 'One' button on the remote. Harsh, with fairness around the edges.

Most of the men seem to be wearing, what Anthony Moss calls, pyjamas (just the shorts)

I'd feel curiously compelled to watch the wrestling.

And I do have the sneaking suspicion some of the three day eventers love their top hats.

  • Rachel Prosser,

Has there been any gymnastics on TVNZ free to air?

It's a favourite event of the olympics for me (I love the swimming too) and I hadn't even realised it was on - there seems to be no TVNZ coverage for an event which has been an Olympic highlight since Olga Korbut.

Is this because that they bought the Olympics with NZ on Air funding so we can only see NZ participants?

Yes. Quite a reasonable amount over the weekend on TV1 - it was qualifying, I believe. I assume the finals will also be broadcast.

  • Peter Ashby,

Well as an expat I can tell you that it varies. It helps to have Stuff's listings of who's on when to target our viewing via the Beeb's multiscreen wonder. It is also fine in something like the rowing where they have to talk about Mahe Drysdale because he is leading, but also the Beeb does get a bit Commonwealth friendly at times too. However in something like for eg, the women's cycling roadrace it consists of staring at the screen and excitingly saying to each other: I saw a flash of white top with black down the arms for a moment in the peloton.

Oh and we are lucky if we get coverage of team sports games like the hockey or the basketball. Such teams will have to make it to quarters and semis for us to watch them I suspect. But them's the breaks.

'Twoud be nice if we could view TVNZ's online feed but. Couldn't we put our passport numbers in or something?

I too, as an expat, I particularly enjoyed the dark humour of the Olympics section of the tvnz.co.nz website.

    i.e.:

"We're not going to let you watch the Olympics videos, BUT the advert before the video (that you can't watch) streams just fine. Enjoy!

How 3rd world. Especially, considering that most of us over in Europe would be watching it during the "downtime" of the website, i.e., the middle of the night in NZ. Bandwidth excuses, presumably the reason (?), would thus be irrelevant.

    Email tvnz.co.nz with a "friendly" email. I did :)

With the crazy lights, and all kinds of cords coming from them? Bizarre, and very un-zorro like.

There is a brief but drunken discussion this week in the Dropkicks podcast about skintight Olympic uniforms.

    There is?

Quite a bit actually - at least three separate times on Sunday of the all-round qualifying, involving some spectacular falls from the uneven bars.

    I love the Olympics.

    And yay, Hadyn!

I tried to get Olympic video from all over the world last night and, if I'm reading the links right and I'd like to think that I am, the broadcasters are tightly hamstrung by their broadcast conditions.

TV1 had almost* full coverage of the NZ men's hockey first game against Korea. It was great to watch. They came back from 0-1 down at half time to win 3-1.

    Cheers,
    Brent.

*Live cut to swimming at one point to see Moss Burmester in his 200m butterfly heat. He managed a respectable third. TV1 totally ballsed up the live cross to chat with him afterwards. And the inane questions - on and on - arghh ...

I'd rather they just showed the sport, and did away completely with the talking to people before and after the events.
