Field Theory: Massive Fraud

  • Mike Graham,

My hat goes off to Rich of Observation, who came up with this on 3 Nov 08 re Stanford:

Chardonnay: so Mr Stanford, what is it you do?
Stanford: I'm one of them billionaire businessmen
Chardonnay: ooo, so you make a lot of money?
    Stanford: quite sufficient, thank you
Chardonnay: like my Dazza, he makes heaps of dosh, but Kevin his manager says that if he doesn't watch it he'll be playing for Lesser Snoring next year
Stanford: oh, I'm sure he's got a few years yet
Chardonnay: when do you billionaire businessman have to stop playing
Stanford: well we don't really, unless we get thrown in jail. And then we get to start again after we get out
Chardonnay: oooo, thats nice! [moves to sit on Stanford's knee]. So you've got a few years in you yet then?

I wonder when he will get out (if convicted).

  • Paul Williams,

But we should get something clear first; Panthers fans and rugby league fans in general will be throwing him flack and possible the occasional bottle because, and I speak in generic terms, they are munters.

I once spent two days and a night at the Panthers League Club. It was proximate to a shooty/war-gamey/ultimate game thing a friend insisted upon as part of his Stag do (which was fantastic fun and unbelievably expensive). I can confirm Hayden's analysis. Panthers fans are unbelievable munters. I had flash backs to my days as a junior at the Otahuhu Rugby Club in the '70s. Saturday evenings spent playing indoor bowls and some weird racing game with wooden horses. All good fun when you're 6, 10 and 12 even.

I don't recommend the Panthers club. I don't recommend Sydney west of Haberfield frankly. If you have to go there, do as the locals do; triple Bundy and Coke please.

  • Kyle Matthews,

So Aaron Neich (video at the link) will be the first male cheerleader, gay or otherwise, for the Panthers, and he's expecting some flack.

He seems to have ripped the armholes for his singlets a little when putting it on.

    I look like this.

Will you be a cocktail waiter at Webstock too?

  • jon_knox,

Or the refs had a bias against the home teams for not complying with the security rules.

So take the security rules out of the equation...ask the (seemingly) few dozen spectator's who attend socc...sorry football (top level domestic league) in NZ not to attend for a while and play a few games in neutral but empty stadiums....but that opens the door on the Hawthorne effect.

I wonder if any of those Italian games were played at neutral stadiums whilst work was occurring to rectify the security non-compliance?

I prefer my friend's ika mata version:

"You put the lime in the coconut. And then you put in the raw fish."

Although he has a cod-Jamaican accent in that song, so he says 'bote'. Idly wondering: why are people allowed to do fake Jamaican accents sometimes (Nilsson) but not other times (Sting)?

Oooh. Nilsson thread. I don't think we've had one of those on PA.

    That is partially incorrect.

Some of them were played in empty stadiums, or (more frequently) without the supporters of the visiting team.

  • BenWilson,

That's some interesting research! I must say, from my years of playing sports, that I found crowds didn't seem to influence the fairness much. They did increase the excitement and motivation of the players of both teams. But it's interesting that the empty stadium led to more calls against the locals. Was this 'inverse bias' on the referee, or the players, though? Perhaps they did actually foul more at home. A crowd might temper this, as it did in games I played - it's pretty demotivating to doing a professional foul (I played waterpolo which is basically all about professional fouls), when there's a roar from the crowd, whether it's for or against the foul. Generally, you'd rather it was just unnoticed.

More believable would be “"I was always uneasy with Pietersen as captain" – Average English cricket fan
