  • Joanna,

Bowling League really is excellent and I do recommend that if you're in Wellington you enter a team. Last year we had the best villians ever in the form of Clemenger BBDO. This year I'm anticipating that the Bowlingtonista will do even better than sixth place! But we need to do some hard thinking on what our uniforms will consist of.

  • Joanna,

You make a good point, I am fond of white russians so perhaps our team's uniform might consist of dressing gowns. Or we could take it to the next logical step and then I can wear my PJs.

Uh oh, I hope we're not giving the competition any ideas.

  • TroyHoward,

    ...are you shitting me?

Only 91 words about the Warriors?

A team that has been written off that many times this year that sometimes it seems they'd been redacted.

I rate the Warriors achievement a hell of a lot higher than what the AB's produced on Saturday night! Sure the two games were absolute stunners, but the Warriors had a Everest to climb in the Storm, while the All Blacks merely had to contend with a Mt Cook to get over the Wallabies.

Jeez, maybe the Warriors player who was overheard in the tunnel at full time was right is saying "..maybe now we'll get some fucking respect."

  • Russell Brown,

__The Men of Gold took the ball down to the All Blacks 22 with some excellent handling and committed charges but the move broke down when it seemed an All Blacks player had clearly charged in at the side of the ruck.__

That’s the ARU take on it anyway (the "men of gold" are the Wallabies by the way).

    Say fucking what!?

I have a high-resolution visual memory of exactly what happened: in a final, triumphant act of strength and courage, several All Blacks drove over the ball with a ferocity that the Australians, desperate as they were, could not answer.

Then Piri Weepu booted the thing into the stand.

How could anyone see it another way?

  • Hadyn Green,

    @Troy
    Totally, none taken :)

Well...look at it this way, if I had written more, you wouldn't have had your chance to show how much you thought of their win.

To answer your question: no I am not shitting you.

I possibly would've written more however I didn't see the game. Was it replayed on a free to air station at a reasonable hour? I didn't see it on the programme list, which, it's fair to say, is shit.

Both the Warriors and the Paralympics took a giant boot to the nuts over the coverage they received (especially the Paralympians who are setting records!)

Jeez, maybe the Warriors player who was overheard in the tunnel at full time was right in saying "..maybe now we'll get some fucking respect."

He's not correct either I'm afraid. League will always be the poor cousin to rugby in New Zealand. There is no pretense to league (that I've seen).

  • Hadyn Green,

In HD did Piri look as (ahem) rotund as he did on the big screen at the pub?

Actually on that, at one point in the game when the All Blacks were driving over the ball after a long period of Aussie possession I knee-jerkingly yelled out "C'mon Black!" Beautifully, my friends answered with the same, then the whole pub erupted with insane yelling until the Blacks go the ball.

I totally take all credit for the win.

"...maybe now we'll get some fucking respect."

Full respect to the Warriors for the win, but they'll get my unending respect when they win something, and when they start winning 60% plus of their games, including against top opposition. They're as consistent as the Black Caps, and as frustrating to follow.

I'd imagine the bloke who said that referred more to respect from the Aussies, not so much from here in NZ, where they have good support and a reasonable amount of support from the press who like to ride their League is a much better game donkey all over the radio (stand up Veitch, oh, you ae standing up, sorry about that).

My web site which I get tv listings from (nzcity had the game starting at 11.40. When I switched over before that time (umm, about 10.30?) the game was already 55 minutes in.

So it was on at a reasonable hour on free to air Prime, it just wasn't advertised as such :P.

Good 25 minutes of rugby league though. Number of times the Warriors got close to the line and pulled down by desperate Storm tackles. If they create that many opportunities they'll be odd-on to beat any of the five remaining teams.

Vatuvai's setup of the last try where he committed both defenders was really classy. I just about threw the remote at Michael Witt on my TV though.

Oh, and the ARC in Wellington has got to be the finest way to watch rugby ithout being there - just spot on!

  • Hadyn Green,

Have to say I recall Russell's HD and not the other ... and I was sitting 3 feet from your Hadyn :-)

As do I, I just noticed on all the replays that Piri seems to be a bit more... solid than he was before.

I thought that final kick might've been like Homer Simpson playing baseball in slow motion.

Other wonderful quotes from the ARU include:

But the Wallabies won a tighthead brilliantly from the ensuing scrum, casting in to considerable doubt the All Blacks supposed scrum superiority, and then Richie McCaw was penalized yet again for offside at the breakdown...

But with Kaplan’s patience stretched very thin the All Blacks were wary of any more ruck infringements and the Men of Gold were able to put together some consistent possession...

The second half started as the first had ended with the Wallabies getting good quick ruck ball that they used in a structured and composed fashion. With just a few minutes gone in the second period McCaw was penalized again for slowing the ball down at ruck time. The All Blacks captain was pushing very close to receiving a Yellow Card...

The Wallabies looked like they might hit back immediately as they put together double figure phases in the All Blacks 22 after another kick mistake, this time by New Zealand. But somehow the All Blacks defence held firm...

And it goes on like that, makes me wonder if Stephen Jones is writing their match reports

  • Dave Patrick,

And Stephen Donald is from Waiuku, who knew? Not my ladyfriend who was taught history by his Dad.

"Incredibly small world" time again - I was also taught by his Dad, who was a pretty handy fullback for Waiuku in his day, and almost made the Counties team at one stage. I'm only guessing here, but his Dad must have been teaching at Waiuku College for quite a while if he taught your ladyfriend as well as me (me being old and all).

Well, as a long time frustrated, abused and perplexed supporter of the Warriors I can say that I am utterly stoked. S.T.O.K.E.D

And, I am not listening to grumpy Paul, fingers in ears.

  • Russell Brown,

Did anyone manage to buy Warriors tickets online via Ticketek this morning?

I hammered away at the reload button this morning -- getting error messages, failed loads and "try again" messages -- and eventually got through after an hour, by which time the seats Ticketek said were available weren't really available, because the ground had sold out.

Is it really impossible for Ticketek to scale properly for events like this?

Probably not, but I have a suspicion that operation is wholly owned and operated by masochists who really, really like getting the largest possible number of people into the maximum state of blind fury at any given moment. It's a living, I guess.

  • Bevan Shortridge,

Did anyone manage to buy Warriors tickets online via Ticketek this morning?

Yes, I did get straight in but didn't like the Best available on offer, so waited, eventually got back in (by which time I was beginning to regret not taking the best available) and got where I wanted. Scalpers are already on trademe it seems (see Herald site, which I can't figure out how to link to). I checked Prime TV's listings on Saturday which showed the delayed Warriors game at 9.30pm. I had the option of radio sports live broadcast from 6pm. Hummed and harred about going with radio - I never quite get where they are on the field but that's just me - but eventually gave in and caught last ten minutes of first half and all of second half on radio before sitting down to watch it on Prime a few hours later.

  • Yamis,

Cheers for the token league coverage Hadyn. It was replayed on Prime at 9:30 on Sunday night.

Full respect to the Warriors for the win, but they'll get my unending respect when they win something, and when they start winning 60% plus of their games, including against top opposition. They're as consistent as the Black Caps, and as frustrating to follow.

Paul, the Warriors have the 4th best regular season record in the entire competition from the past 3 seasons.

    Melbourne 58 wins, 14 losses
    Manly 49 wins, 23 losses
    Broncos 39 wins, 1 draw, 33 losses
    Warriors 38 wins, 1 draw, 34 losses

Everybody else is either 50/50 or worse.

They've made the playoffs in 5 of the last 8 years and missed one year because the 4 points they were docked (2006) but on playing record they had the 8th best record that season.

This year they have beaten the Storm in 2 from 3, lost to the Sea Eagles twice, split the games v the Sharks, lost to the Roosters, beat the Broncos, beat the Raiders and lost to the Dragons.

Every team in this competition is inconsistent apart from the Storm and Sea Eagles as it is incredibly even. Its just the nature of the comp and something that will always exist, especially for a side crossing the ditch every other week.

The Dragons were playing fantastic footie in the last few months and hammered the Warriors a few weeks ago and they play two weak games and are gone. The Raiders were destroying teams, but get touched up by the Sharks and are gone. You could go on all day about sides that play great one week and meet their maker the next.

  • Yamis,

Oh yeah, and a mate has come through and scored me tickets after we had the same internet buying debacle that many others did this morning.

The scalping and trademe get me pretty pissed. The tickets state that you need written permission from the NRL to onsell them and can't do so for a profit ("premium"). If the trademe business boss says its a headache for them and he wishes they could ban them then why don't they simply have a requirement that people display the seat numbers. They can then be cancelled so people wouldn't bother selling and buying.

I wonder if they are giving the success fee to charity? muhahahaha
