  • DCBCauchi,

Just for off-topic laughs, towards a definition of art:

An art work is an object, whether real or virtual, whose constituent elements have been intentionally arranged for a non-functional purpose and that is presented in such a way that it refers to other art works.

    Discuss.

Right up there with L Ron Hubbard.

Hey, Battlefield Earth was a cracking good read when I was 15.

Yeah, I've read it. Out and proud, man, out and proud. Don't lay your societal hangups on me.

    Which neatly brings me to...

I always feel isolated in those kind of discussions, expecting at any moment that people will work out I like the wrong kind of music or TV shows, have the wrong taste in books, etc.

The older I get, the less I care (in all senses) for other peoples implicit or explicit judgement on my tastes. Very happy to find common ground, lowbrow or high, leftfield or centre ground. But other peoples value judgements on those things we don't have in common are not welcome.

It's all because of the tyranny of fascist structures this totalitarian society has imposed on me! I.e. the keyboard!!!

    The injustice of it all!!!!!

It's all a conspiracy of computer designers to keep us ignorant and enslaved.

That's a self-referential definition. Unless you point to the other art works, I can't use it to identify any art works.

Yes it is. Luckily, there are 50,000 years' worth of art works to point to, in a wonderful variety of forms.

I reckon it has to be self-referential to include references to other works within the work as well as presentation in gallery contexts etc.

Requirements for a definition of art:

It has to include all art and exclude all non-art.

This means questions of taste are irrelevant, as are questions of whether something is good art or not.

All we want is the answer to the question: 'What is art?'

No reason. But if you do defining what art is is the necessary first step towards defining the criteria for 'good' art.

Well, yeah. Really only matters to those making the shit. And a few others. Very few others.

Nothing wrong with that. Wouldn't have it any other way.

I'm often interested to hear, more because it tells me about the person than about the art. But yes, people saying things you like are crap wears thin fast. It seems more likely, the more refined the tastes of the person.
