As past attempts to establish the great tit (parus major) in NZ appear to have failed you should be cool.

Funnily enough that wasn't the only chook there that could have been in Labyrinth.

    Crimson rosellas.
They have the most un-parrotlike call, like a little silver bell.
Magical critters, lovely atmospheric shot, you can almost smell the eucalypt.

Right, instead of resting like I should, after an exhausting weekend with a 350km round trip thrown in, I instead trawled through my external HD in my own version of photographic competition of the year. You want flowers? I have flowers, although I have no idea, apart from the roses, what any of them are. These particular ones I find poignant.

And this one was taken at the zoo in 2009, and must surely be a fluke. I was fairly convinced initially that it was someone else's but no, apparently, when I want to be, I'm quite good at this photography lark.

And because it's a rainy Sunday, and it's one of my missing Dad days, this photo I took a couple of years after he died because I was feeling melancholy, and this meant something to me at the time.

  • Islander, in reply to Joe Wylie,

One turned up in Big O 12 years ago, in the ngaio tree by my back door, and it was the call that alerted me- I'd never heard anything like it. We got all excited* (after 2 of us identified
it- one from Oz experience, and one from bird-ref books.) There had been blown-accross settlers before (kotuku & cattle egrets & spur-winged plovers to mention
    just 3.)
But no: turned out one of the neighbours had a secret aviary...

*The pair of resident tui gave it heaps, and only stopped when the aviary-owner
lured it back into a travelling cage.

These flowers are dead and gone too. :)
I should add, they did brighten up our building site, no matter how much they got in the way.

  • Geoff Lealand,

Bird calls! For the past three days we gave heard a chiming call, around about a minute apart, from an unsighted bird high up in our cedar. Not a bellbird nor a tui but I wondered if it might be a shining cuckoo. Could it be, this far north (Waikato')? It sounds forlorn.
Photos? I could post lots of old cinemas from around NZ.

That shot looks like the main hothouse. Like most of the gardens it's open and pretty much unscathed.
